DAILY MAIL COMMENT: Britain's annus horribilis under an accidental PM
In an Ipsos/Mori survey conducted exactly a year after the 1997 election, Sir Tony Blair 's popularity was even greater than when he steered his party to its momentous victory. Labour was polling at a thumping 54 per cent – 11 points higher than on election day and his personal approval ratings were similarly sky-high. Crucially, his backbench MPs adored him, having been propelled back to relevance after 18 years in the wilderness. There were a few exceptions, but the idea of large-scale rebellion was unthinkable. Compare and contrast with Sir Keir Starmer 's abject first year in office. The Daily Mail said from the start that his was a 'loveless landslide'. And so it has proved. He is the most unpopular incoming PM on record. His approval rating of minus-39 is a staggering 83 points behind where Sir Tony was at the same stage. Labour is also languishing behind Reform UK in the polls, his backbenchers are in open revolt and he has been forced into three humiliating policy U-turns inside a month. Meanwhile, the growth he so confidently promised has atrophied, the UK's already frightening debt and deficit are ballooning and his Chancellor's plans to 'fix the foundations' of the economy are in tatters. After the latest rebellion over welfare reform, she must find upwards of £3.2billion to balance her sums. This is sure to mean more punishing tax rises – breaking yet another flagship promise. Rachel Reeves is now a lame-duck Chancellor, who will have to seek the permission of her backbench colleagues for any major spending reform. She is clearly living on borrowed time. Her boss may be a little more secure – but the storm clouds are gathering. Having forced him into climbdowns on two key policies, his dissident MPs smell blood. Rebellion may become an addiction. Even with the concessions, the welfare Bill remains a mess and may well fail to pass in the Commons on Tuesday. If it does, Sir Keir's authority will be shot, and rumours will swell about a leadership challenge. It would be no great surprise. In many ways he is an accidental prime minister. Despite his huge majority, only one in five of those on the electoral roll voted for him. He won by default, because the Tories defenestrated their biggest electoral asset, then dissolved into a dysfunctional, unelectable rabble. Not being a Conservative was enough to sweep Sir Keir into power, but we quickly discovered he has feet of clay. The truth is he's a man of few real convictions and knows little about the politics of government. He paid billions to surrender the Chagos Islands on spurious legal grounds and absented himself from historic debates on assisted suicide and late-term abortion. Now, in just 12 months, he has lost control of his party. So, what happens next? Can he recover, or is he a permanent hostage to his party's class-warrior Left? Either way the next four years could be horrendous for anyone with a private sector job, savings, property or a pension pot. The Right must use this time to resolve its differences and unite. The Tories and Reform together currently command 46 per cent of the popular vote, comfortably enough for a super-majority. By 2029, the country will be even more on its knees than today. If neither Kemi Badenoch nor Nigel Farage can beat Labour on their own, it is their patriotic duty to do so together.

Red Lobster Roasted Over Its New Menu Item: 'Will Never Go Back'
is hoping to bounce back from bankruptcy with a splash, but its newest Crabfest menu items are already sparking controversy. The seafood chain, which filed for bankruptcy in May and shut down over 100 locations, recently launched two new signature boils, the Mariner's Boil and the Sailor's Boil, part of its annual Crabfest celebration. But while some customers are calling the dishes "delicious" and "worth the price," others are accusing Red Lobster of serving up disappointing, even inedible meals. The Mariner's Boil features a Maine lobster tail, snow crab legs, a dozen shrimp, red potatoes, and corn, starting at around $45 depending on location. The Sailor's Boil offers a more modest helping of shrimp, smoked sausage, potatoes, and corn for roughly $24. Both come with a choice of Cajun butter, roasted garlic butter, or Old Bay seasoning. One Reddit user raved about the deal, saying, "It was really good & worth the price… I was surprised!" They added that their dining partner went through three baskets of Red Lobster's iconic Cheddar Bay Biscuits. But others had a drastically different experience. "My corn was cold, sausage burnt, and the garlic butter was just shrimp scampi sauce," one diner complained on Daily Mail's report. Another said, "You couldn't pay me to eat at RL," while a third described their local Red Lobster in Pineville, NC, as a "dumpster," citing dirty tables and limited menu options. "The seafood boil looked like a kids meal," they added. Complaints also rolled in over pricing and portion size. "A small side of Cajun sauce is $3.99? There's some work that needs to be done for sure," one review read. Despite the backlash, Red Lobster is going full steam ahead with its Crabfest revival. "Red Lobster's Crabfest is the ultimate summer dining experience, featuring exciting and flavorful dishes like our new Seafood Boils," Nichole Robillard, Chief Marketing Officer of Red Lobster, said in a news release. "Whether you're a longtime Red Lobster lover or participating in Crabfest for the first time, we've got something to bring everyone joy." In addition to the new boils, seasonal offerings include Crabby Stuffed Mushrooms, a Crab-Topped Baked Potato, and Steak or Salmon Oscar topped with lump crab and creamy sauce. Fan favorites like Crab Your Way and Crab Carbonara also make a return. The restaurant giant first filed for bankruptcy in May 2024, following a reported $76 million loss in 2023. As part of its restructuring strategy, Red Lobster shuttered dozens of underperforming locations across the country, including several in Alabama, in an effort to "simplify" operations and cut costs. The chain's recent bankruptcy has been linked to a combination of rising operational costs and the infamous $20 endless shrimp promotion, which, while a viral sensation, reportedly dealt a significant blow to the company's finances. At the helm of this turnaround is new CEO Damola Adamolekun, who has already made bold moves to revive the struggling brand. One of the first orders of business? Placing a hard stop to the "endless" promotions that some insiders say contributed to the chain's downfall, most notably the infamous "All You Can Eat Shrimp" deal, which went viral but ultimately proved unsustainable. Instead, Red Lobster is shifting its focus to profitability and more strategic menu choices. New offerings, including seasonal seafood boils and revamped favorites, have already begun to roll out across the country. With the court's green light, the brand is hoping this reboot can steer it back to its former glory. Whether the new menu can help turn the tide for Red Lobster remains to be seen, and diners aren't holding back their reviews, good, bad, or boiled.

Nissan Armada Nismo gets performance makeover
A family-moving SUV just got a performance makeover. The internet doesn't appear sold. Nissan is rolling out a sport-tuned version of its high-rolling, three-row Armada SUV, a near-luxury set of wheels that already starts at $60,000. The new trim is called the Armada Nismo — it's set to hit dealerships lots this fall. It's also hugely important for an automaker that recently posted flagging sales and a CEO change . The standard Armada got a full redesign for this year, swapping its aging V8 engine for a more efficient and powerful V6. The style reboot features a boxier look with width-spanning LED taillights, extra chrome, and a plush seven- or eight-seat interior. Now, Nissan is cranking up the attitude. The Nismo trim adds red interior and exterior accents, reworked lower body panels, and a squatter stance. Under the hood, the Nismo gets a 35-horsepower bump and tweaked valves that deepen the exhaust sounds — but only if you spring for premium fuel. 'Armada NISMO expands the Armada family to connect with drivers who share a passion for excitement, performance, and bold, sports-inspired design,' a product spokesperson told While Nissan hasn't revealed pricing yet, current Armada trims range from $59,000 to $82,000. That positions the Nismo squarely in the territory of premium family SUVs — a growing, lucrative market segment in the US, where large vehicles continue to dominate new car sales. But the launch comes at a tricky time for the automaker. Nissan has faced shrinking profits, leadership shakeups, and ongoing headwinds from President Donald Trump's 25 percent automotive tariffs — a policy that affects models like the Japan-produced Armada . Nissan has been in big trouble for months. In November, executives at the company warned the automaker only had '12 months' of cash on hand to survive . Its financial position comes after turmoil in the C-suite. Carlos Ghosn, the former CEO who helped revive the company in the 2000s, was arrested in 2018 by authorities in Tokyo. They believed the executive misused company assets. Ghosn was flown out of the country in a plane's cargo in 2019. He has remained in Lebanon since. In his absence, the company had an aging portfolio with old transmission technology. The cars were built at dozens of factories around the world, leaving the company extremely susceptible to global onshoring trends. A leadership vacuum appeared at the company after his legal turmoils. Makoto Uchida, a Japanese executive, took over, but was ousted after six years. Ivan Espinosa took over as top boss earlier this year. Despite selling the fifth-most cars in the US last year, Moody's, a credit agency, downranked Nissan to 'junk' status earlier this year .
