Chiefs' Rashee Rice to be full participant in training camp despite jail sentence
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice will be a full participant at training camp, coach Andy Reid said, after Rice was sentenced to five years of deferred probation and 30 days in jail as a condition of his probation last week. 'We're going to progress as normal with (Rice),' Reid said Sunday after the Chiefs arrived at Missouri Western State University's campus for training camp. 'He'll go in and take all the reps that he'll normally take. We always rotate that position, so depending on what happens here with the future, whoever needs to play will step in and know what they are doing and be in good shape to do it.' Advertisement Reid said he did not know when the NFL would decide on a potential suspension for Rice. On Thursday, Rice pleaded guilty in a Dallas County court to two third-degree felony charges, including a collision involving serious bodily injury and racing on a highway causing bodily injury. The charges stemmed from Rice's role in a 2024 multi-vehicle car crash in which he crashed his Lamborghini, causing a chain reaction collision involving four other vehicles. As part of a plea agreement with the Dallas County District Attorney's Office, Rice will be required to pay restitution to all the victims for their out-of-pocket medical expenses before the plea, totaling $115,481.91. 'We have been closely monitoring all developments in the matter, which remains under review,' the NFL said in a statement after Rice appeared in court. League sources confirmed to The Athletic on Thursday that Rice is likely facing a multi-game suspension. Rice apologized to the victims in a statement released by his lawyer Royce West, and said, 'There have been a lot of sleepless nights thinking about the damages that my actions caused, and I will continue working within my means to make sure that everyone impacted will be made whole.' In a preliminary investigation into the crash, police determined that Rice was racing his former SMU teammate Theodore Knox at high speeds when Rice struck a median wall. Rice and Knox ran from the scene, while two other drivers involved in the crash were treated for minor injuries, and two occupants of another vehicle were taken to the hospital with minor injuries. An arrest warrant was issued for Rice after the crash, and he turned himself in to police one day later. In addition to civil lawsuits filed by the other drivers involved, Rice was facing criminal charges of aggravated assault, collision involving serious bodily injury and six counts of collision involving injury. Advertisement Rice was not placed on the commissioner's exempt list after the crash, and Jeff Miller, NFL executive vice president of communications, public affairs and policy, said the league would await the outcome of the case proceedings. After playing in 16 games of his rookie season in 2023, Rice tore the lateral collateral ligament in his right knee in Week 4 last year, ending his season. The Chiefs selected him in the second round of the 2023 NFL Draft.

Chiefs WR Rashee Rice sentenced to 5 years probation, 30 days in jail after multi-car crash in Dallas
Kansas City Chiefs wide receiver Rashee Rice has been sentenced to five years probation and 30 days of jail time by a Dallas County judge, per the Dallas County District Attorney's Office. Rice pled guilty to two felony charges related to the receiver's role in a multi-car crash last year. Rice was sentenced to deferred probation as a result of the plea deal, meaning that his case will be dismissed if he successfully completes probation. Per ESPN's Adam Schefter, the 30 days of jail time can be served at any point during Rice's five years on probation. Additionally, Rice was ruled to pay the medical expenses of all of the victims, totaling $115,481.91. The incident took place on March 30, 2024, as Rice drove 119 miles per hour in a Lamborghini during rush hour traffic, per the DA's office. Rice hit other vehicles in the process, causing a chain reaction that affected multiple cars; following the crash, Rice fled on foot. After the crash, Rice was sued for $1 million by the two people who were injured in the crash. That lawsuit was settled on Wednesday, according to Dallas County court records. As a result of the ruling, Rice will pay out $1 million to the two plaintiffs and will pay their lawyer's fees. The rulings open the NFL to discipline Rice directly. Rice is expected to receive a multi-game suspension that, per Schefter, the wide receiver is expected to serve this season. The Washington Post, however, reported that any decision to suspend is "not close to final" at this point. The media release from the DA's office included a statement from Rice's lawyer, Royce West, on Rice's behalf. "Last March, I was involved in a high-speed accident in Dallas. There have been a lot of sleepless nights thinking about the damages that my actions caused, and I will continue working within my means to make sure that everyone impacted will be made whole. I urge everyone to mind the speed limit, drive safe and drive smart," Rice said in the statement. "Last and certainly not least, I am profoundly sorry for the physical damages to person and property. I fully apologize for the harm I caused to innocent drivers and their families." Rice had a shortened 2025 season due to injury, going on injured reserve in early October. He underwent season-ending LCL surgery the next week. The 25-year-old receiver. participated in the Chiefs' voluntary OTAs last month, and returned to Kansas City this week for mandatory minicamp.

Fireworks for the Fourth shortage? North Texas wholesaler says it's possible
If you're buying fireworks this year, some items may be pricier because of the tariff war between the U.S. and China. John Palmer said tariff prices kept many companies from ordering fireworks earlier this year. Last-minute shoppers may not get what they want, he said. Firework enthusiasts began making their way to Pyro Penny's Fireworks in Dallas County to purchase goodies for the Fourth of July. Darius Beacham said he's a first-timer whose family usually watches the holiday fireworks display at Fair Park. They decided to change things up this year. "I think you get more thrill when you light it yourself," Beacham said. "And so, that's what we wanted. We want the thrill." Beacham is one of the predicted thousands who will come to the Dowdy Ferry Road looking for John Palmer's inventory. He owns the retail stand and Palmer Wholesale Fireworks. With 55 years of experience in the pyro business, Palmer is both prepared and concerned at the same time. Prepared, Palmer said, because he had more than 90% of his inventory when the United States and China got into a tariff showdown. "China, they're the fireworks people. They do it better than anybody on the planet," he said. Palmer said he got in touch with his suppliers in China to ensure a deal as the war with the US escalated. "I went to China, and I negotiated some prices with some of the Chinese," Palmer said. "So, I didn't have to go up as much as a lot of people did." Still, he admits that some of his prices increased by as much as $5 while others decreased. Firecrackers, he said, have remained the same price, 99 cents. Customer Taylor Martin came prepared to carry on a family tradition. "I'm just going to have a good time," Taylor Martin said. "I didn't even think about the prices, to be honest. I mean, of course, there's a budget involved." Budgets became a factor for many fireworks businesses that had to deal with 125% reciprocal tariffs. It made the industry fragile, according to the National Fireworks Association. Palmer believes there may be a fireworks shortage going into Independence Day, connected to the price of the tariffs. "There'll start to be a shortage of fireworks because so many people canceled containers, like thousands of them," he said. Palmer sells to other retail stands and supplies his own. He advises customers not to wait until the last minute to buy fireworks, which is the typical purchasing pattern. According to the business owner, enthusiasts may end up with items they don't want if they procrastinate. Beacham is not in that category. His first experience, he said, was informative and pricer than expected. It's worth what his family hopes for on the Fourth of July. "Everybody pulls out those phones and gets a recording and, you know, having a good time," Beacham said. "Just something that we can catch your family memories, you know."
