Mavericks hire Ethan Casson in new role as president under CEO Rick Welts
DALLAS (AP) — The Dallas Mavericks hired Ethan Casson in a new role as president Tuesday, giving CEO Rick Welts someone to handle daily operations on the business side while he focuses on the franchise's plans for a new arena. Casson was most recently CEO of the Minnesota Timberwolves along with the WNBA's Lynx and the G-League's Iowa Wolves. He served in that role for nine years. The addition of Casson comes seven months after Welts came out of retirement to replace Cynt Marshall, who was hired by then-owner Mark Cuban in the wake of a sexual harassment scandal in the business office of the Mavericks. Cuban sold his majority interest in the club to the Las Vegas-based Adelson and Dumont families in late 2023. Patrick Dumont took over as the team's governor, with Cuban keeping a minority stake and becoming alternate governor. 'The Mavericks are committed to being an elite professional sports franchise, and fundamental to that goal is adding top-tier executives like Ethan Casson to our senior management team,' Dumont said. Welts has said the club hopes to open a new arena in 2031. In his previous role with Golden State, Welts spearheaded the plan that moved the Warriors across the bay to San Francisco from Oakland. The Mavericks share American Airlines Center with the NHL's Dallas Stars, and Welts has said the NBA club anticipates going solo with a new arena. Welts has said the Mavs want the new arena to be in Dallas rather than one of the suburbs. Before joining the Timberwolves, Casson was CEO of the San Francisco 49ers when the NFL franchise made the move to Levi's Stadium in Santa Clara from Candlestick Park. Casson struck the naming rights deal with Levi's. 'He will be my partner in charting the team into the future and will allow me to devote more time to our strategic priorities, including the building of our new arena and entertainment district in Dallas, and our transition from a basketball organization to a sports and entertainment company operating our own venue,' Welts said. ___ AP NBA:

Lakers' Luka Doncic shows off summer shred in Men's Health
After plenty of attention was brought to Luka Doncic's fitness level following his shocking February trade to the Los Angeles Lakers, the five-time All-Star has been putting another surprise together this offseason. After reports of an improved physique surfaced earlier this summer, a profile in Men's Health magazine confirmed the extent to which Doncic has gone to develop a slimmed-down look as he prepares for his first full season in L.A. Doncic, 26, has generally been listed at 6-foot-6 and 230 pounds, although opinions on the weight have varied. It did not prohibit him from scoring 28.2 points with 8.2 rebounds and 7.7 assists last season. But reports indicated this past winter that the Dallas Mavericks had become exasperated with Doncic's lack of fitness, which might have contributed to a calf injury that the star guard had been rehabbing for a month prior to the trade that shocked the NBA. Ankle, calf, knee and back injuries have slowed Doncic at certain times in his career, although he still managed to play at least 61 games in a season until he was reduced to 50 last year with the Mavericks and Lakers combined. Now, Doncic is visibly slimmer after an improved diet combined with a fitness program. He has been avoiding gluten and keeping sugar to a minimum, while loading up on protein to help him get through multiple workouts a day that include lifting weights along with on-court drills. "Obviously, be the best that I can be, take care of myself," Doncic said to Men's Health. "This year, with my team, I think we did a huge step. But this is just the start, you know. I need to keep going. Can't stop." While LeBron James exercised a contract option to return to the Lakers in 2025-26, the team also added center Deandre Ayton, guard Marcus Smart and forward Jake LaRavia. The profile did not mention Doncic's current weight, but photographs showed off his slim look with greater muscle definition in his arms. His workouts kept him away from basketball at first, then had him return to the court in June. He will play for Slovenia in EuroBasket in August. "So every summer I try my best to work on different things," he said. "Obviously, I'm very competitive. This summer was just a little bit different, you know. It kind of motivated me to be even better."

Luka Doncic comments on his physical transformation this summer
We're not even halfway through the summer or the NBA offseason, and yet Luka Doncic is looking like a new man already. Many have commented on some photos and videos of him that have surfaced in which he looks a lot fitter and trimmer than he had looked in the recent past. Doncic has been criticized for his lack of fitness and conditioning, especially after the Dallas Mavericks traded him to the Los Angeles Lakers on Feb. 1, and it looks like he has taken that negative feedback to heart. He has reportedly stuck to a disciplined workout and diet regimen that he began right after the Lakers were knocked out of the first round of the playoffs. Men's Health magazine featured a couple of pieces on Monday that detailed Doncic's health and fitness program, and in one of those pieces, he commented on what has taken place. 'Just visually, I would say my whole body looks better,' he says. Doncic is visually trim and defined these days, and yet some may still be skeptical that he has truly changed his ways. It isn't easy to stick to a stringent diet during the long NBA season, especially given the limited meal options during the league's killer travel schedule when players may have to subsist on fast food and room service. But he also hinted that this is just the beginning of a fitter and trimmer version of himself. 'If I stop now,' Dončić says of his effort to rebuild his body, 'it was all for nothing.' The Slovenian has never been known for his athleticism, at least in a classic sense. But during his first one or two seasons in the NBA, he was quicker and more explosive than he has been in recent seasons. He now feels that at least one facet of his athletic ability has improved. 'This year, we didn't measure the jumping yet,' he says. 'But I think it's a little bit higher.' Some reports have claimed that Doncic clocked in with a 42-inch vertical leap during the 2018 scouting combine. Those reports were erroneous — Doncic wasn't even in attendance at the NBA's scouting combine that year. But as long as he keeps up his new fitness and conditioning program — and from all his comments, that is clearly his long-term plan — he could become a huge nightmare for the rest of the NBA. Perhaps no one has seen the best of Doncic yet, despite his career averages of 28.6 points, 8.6 rebounds and 8.2 assists a game.
