FRU truck crash: Counsellors mobilised to assist families cope with loss

IPOH: A team of counsellors has been mobilised to provide emotional support to the families of the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel, who tragically lost their lives in yesterday's crash in Teluk Intan, helping them cope with their loss. Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that the support is provided in addition to financial assistance extended to the families of the victims. 'This team has been assigned specifically to support the families, helping them navigate this difficult time. We must not underestimate the shock they are going through - just yesterday, their loved ones were with them, and today, they are gone,' he said. He said this to reporters after visiting the family of FRU personnel Lance Corporal Damarrulan Abdul Latif, one of the nine who died in the crash on Jalan Chikus-Sungai Lampam, in Teluk Intan, yesterday. During the visit, he extended his condolences and offered words of comfort to the deceased's mother-in-law, Zamilah Mohd Nor, 65; his widow, Haswati Rosdi, 44; and their three children, at the FRU Unit 5 quarters in Sungai Senam. Saifuddin Nasution added that, in addition to moral support, the ministry is also providing financial assistance, including a cash contribution of RM1,200 to each bereaved family to help with funeral arrangements. In addition, he said he had instructed the team to assist in expediting the distribution of group insurance benefits to the affected families without further delay. 'I was assured that the payment process would be completed as soon as possible, which means it should be finalised within two to three weeks,' he said. Meanwhile, he said that during a Cabinet meeting this morning, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, it was decided that the task force formed by the Transport Ministry would submit a report on the accident within a month, in addition to a thorough investigation by the police. Yesterday, nine FRU members were killed when their vehicle, which was on its way back to Ipoh after completing an assignment in Teluk Intan, was hit by a lorry loaded with gravel stones, at 8.54 am.

GENERAL IPOH, May 14 (Bernama) -- A team of counsellors has been mobilised to provide emotional support to the families of the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel, who tragically lost their lives in yesterday's crash in Teluk Intan, helping them cope with their loss. Home minister says 1997 FRU truck was roadworthy, rules out maintenance failure in deadly Teluk Intan crash

IPOH, May 14 — Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has today confirmed that the truck carrying Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel, which was involved in an accident along Jalan Chikus-Sungai Lampam, Teluk Intan yesterday, was deemed roadworthy. Saifuddin said that despite the truck's age, its maintenance records were in good standing. 'Although the truck was manufactured in 1997, there were no issues with its maintenance history, which confirms that it is roadworthy,' he told reporters. He made the statement after visiting the family of Damarrulan Abdul Latif — one of the nine FRU members who tragically lost their lives in the accident — at the FRU quarters in Sungai Senam here. Saifuddin also noted that it is still too early to determine whether the accident was caused by human error of the lorry driver. Yesterday, Hilir Perak police chief Assistant Commissioner Bakri Zainal Abidin had said preliminary investigations suggested that a steering wheel failure was believed to have caused the accident. He further stated that the Home Ministry is fully committed to prioritising the maintenance and upgrading of all assets — not just for the police, but for all agencies under its jurisdiction. When asked about enhancing safety features in such vehicles, including the installation of seat belts, Saifuddin said the issue is complex. 'We need to understand that this is a combat vehicle. It has its pros and cons. When deployed on a mission, every second counts. In an emergency, even one or two seconds spent unbuckling a seat belt could compromise the quality of the mission. 'These are technical matters best left to the experts. However, I can assure you that we remain committed to upgrading our assets,' he said. The minister also said that counsellors have been appointed to assist the affected families as they cope with trauma and grief, helping them to heal and move forward. 'We will also expedite the group insurance claims for all affected personnel. The process is expected to be completed within two weeks at most. 'This demonstrates our collective commitment to supporting the affected families,' he added. Nine members of the force were killed, while two others sustained injuries, when a lorry carrying gravel collided with an FRU truck transporting 15 personnel yesterday.

FRU truck still roadworthy, despite being a 1997 model

IPOH: The Home Ministry today clarified that the combat truck involved in the recent fatal accident, which claimed the lives of nine Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) personnel, was in good working condition and had a solid maintenance record despite being a 1997 model. Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail added that the age of the vehicle should not be seen as a contributing factor to the crash. "I must stress that even though the vehicle is relatively old (1997), its maintenance record is sound. It is still roadworthy. "That's why it's too early to say whether yesterday's incident was due to human error involving the sand truck driver or others. Let the investigation team handle that. "However, the team is committed to improving all assets not only within the police but also across all agencies under the Home Ministry with safety as our top priority," he said. He spoke to reporters after visiting the family of the late Lance Corporal Damarrulan Abdul Latif at the FRU Unit 5 Quarters in Sungai Senam. He is also scheduled to visit four other affected families in Ipoh. The crash, which killed nine FRU personnel in Teluk Intan, is among the deadliest involving Malaysian police, rekindling painful memories of past road tragedies involving enforcement and military units. The earliest and most infamous remains the 1990 Kuala Lumpur–Karak Highway disaster. On Feb 28 that year, a pile-up at Km30.9 claimed 17 lives, including 11 FRU officers. Yesterday, an FRU truck carrying 18 personnel from Unit 5 Sungai Senam collided with a rock-laden lorry at Km15 of Jalan Chikus –Sungai Lampam in Teluk Intan. Eight officers died at the scene, and a ninth died while receiving treatment at Teluk Intan Hospital. When asked if safety measures include adding seat belts in trucks, Saifuddin said that such vehicles are designed as combat units, which presents operational challenges. "A combat vehicle means that if they are deployed, every second matters. Imagine an incident where a two- or three-second delay to unbuckle could compromise operational effectiveness. "So I leave those details to the experts. But let me reiterate that our commitment to upgrading our team's assets is a continuous effort," he said.
