(AP Photo/David Zalubowski) DENVER (AP) — Mickey Moniak finished a double shy of a cycle, Michael Toglia hit a go-ahead, two-run homer in the fifth inning and the Colorado Rockies beat the Chicago White Sox 6-4 on Sunday to avoid a sweep in a series between the two worst teams in the majors. At 21-69, the Rockies also avoided tying the 1907 St. Louis Cardinals and 1916 Philadelphia Phillies for the most losses in the first 90 games of a season in the modern era. Advertisement Moniak had a leadoff home run in the first inning and a two-run triple in the fifth. The former No. 1 overall pick has 13 homers this season, eight in the past month. In his third career MLB game, Colson Montgomery had two hits and an RBI for the White Sox. With two hits and an RBI, Mike Tauchman improved his batting average to .372 over the past 11 games. Zach Agnos (1-3) got the win for the Rockies after giving up one earned run in 1 1/3 innings. Seth Halvorsen pitched a scoreless ninth inning for his eighth save. On the day he was selected for the All-Star Game, White Sox starter Shane Smith (3-7) allowed five earned runs and five hits in 4 1/3 innings. Aaron Civale gets a little wild in White Sox debut after trade from Brewers
ARLINGTON, Texas — Aaron Civale got a little wild in the right-hander's first start for the Chicago White Sox two days after he was traded by the Milwaukee Brewers. Civale walked four of the first seven hitters he faced in a 2-1 loss to the Texas Rangers on Sunday. The 30-year-old finished with four walks, one off his career high, while allowing six hits and two runs in five innings. He threw 65 strikes and 39 balls. Chicago trailed 2-1 when he was replaced by Dan Altavilla to start the sixth. 'Not the cleanest,' Civale said. 'It's been a whirlwind of a week. First couple of innings, just getting back out there and settling in and getting used to the new team, new catcher and all of the above.' The White Sox acquired Civale a day after he said he wanted to remain a starter — for the Brewers or another team — following his demotion to the Milwaukee bullpen. The Brewers made the move to clear the way for hard-throwing prospect Jacob Misiorowski to join the rotation. Civale (1-3) pitched a scoreless first inning despite three walks, thanks in part to Wyatt Langford's double-play grounder. The fourth walk ended up costing Civale when Adolis García scored on the first Texas hit — a two-out double from Ezequiel Duran in the second inning. The Rangers made it 2-0 on Marcus Semien's sacrifice fly in the fifth, when Civale allowed three hits but struck out Jake Burger to end the inning with runners at second and third. 'Credit to him for grinding through that and getting through five innings,' said manager Will Venable, who was ejected after a couple of close calls didn't go Civale's way in the first inning. 'Not his sharpest day, but with these veteran guys that have experience, they're able to navigate tough situations.' All 123 of Civale's regular-season appearances in the major leagues have been starts. This is the third consecutive year he has been part of a midseason trade. Milwaukee got him from Tampa Bay last year. The Rays acquired him from Cleveland in 2023. 'It never gets easier,' Civale said. 'There's comfort in experience that you have, but every time it's new and it's a different challenge in itself. You're trying to make that adjustment as quick as you can. Was out there trying to compete and I wasn't filling up the zone like I would have liked to.' Milwaukee sent Civale, who is eligible for free agency after this season, to the White Sox for first baseman Andrew Vaughn and $807,000 in cash. Civale said he had no issues with anybody in the Brewers clubhouse, or the coaches there. He just wanted to remain a starter, like he had also been for all 86 of his minor-league appearances. The outing against Texas lowered Civale's ERA to 4.67 this season, when he is making $8 million. He has allowed nine runs over 24 innings in five starts since a stint on injured list with a strained left hamstring. Civale threw just six of his first 19 pitches for strikes, and it was during that stretch that home plate umpire Marvin Hudson, the crew chief, gestured into the Chicago dugout. Moments later, he ejected Venable. The second career ejection for Venable, a first-year manager, came on Father's Day. The first was on Mother's Day. Adrian Hauser shines again, gets White Sox past Royals
June 7 - Right-hander Adrian Houser gave up one run in six innings to lift the host Chicago White Sox to a 4-1 win over the Kansas City Royals on Saturday. Dan Altavilla pitched the ninth for his second career save and first since 2020. Houser (2-1) gave up six hits, one walk and had six strikeouts in 92 pitches. The 32-year-old right-hander was released by the Texas Rangers on May 15, while in the minor leagues. Chicago signed him May 20 and immediately put him in the rotation. He has pitched at least six innings in all four of his starts for Chicago. He gave up three earned runs in a 3-2 loss to the Baltimore Orioles in his last start, with scoreless starts against the New York Mets and the Seattle Mariners. Royals right-hander Michael Wacha (3-5), gave up six hits and three earned runs in six innings. Wacha, who fell to 6-2 lifetime against the White Sox, walked one and struck five in 95 pitches. The White Sox took the lead for good in the second inning. Josh Rojas started the two-out rally with a double down the right-field line. Tim Elko followed with a two-run home run to center on the first pitch for the 2-1 lead. The White Sox's Chase Meidroth made it 3-1the third with a towering home run to center on the first pitch of the inning. Vinnie Pasquantino staked the Royals to a 1-0 lead in the second with a lead-off home run. The first baseman, who has reached base in 23 straight games, was on four times with a home run, a walk and two singles. It was the first home run Houser has allowed this season. The Royals threatened in the fourth and sixth innings, but Houser managed to get out of both jams. Maikel Garcia and Pasquantino led off the fourth with back-to-back singles. A wild pitch moved them up to second and third. Houser then struck out Salvador Perez, induced rookie Jac Caglianone into a comebacker and struck out Drew Waters. In the sixth, Bobby Witt Jr. led off with a single, but Garcia hit into a 1-6-3 double play. Pasquantino then walked, but Perez struck out for the third straight time. White Sox sign Dan Altavilla, place Miguel Castro on IL
May 30 - The Chicago White Sox agreed to terms with relief pitcher Dan Altavilla on a one-year, $1 million contract ahead of Friday's series opener at Baltimore. The White Sox made room on the 26-man roster by placing fellow right-hander Miguel Castro on the 15-day injured list with a torn patellar tendon in his right knee. Altavilla, 32, was released by the White Sox on May 24 after going 1-1 with a 2.49 ERA in 20 bullpen appearances at Triple-A Charlotte this season. Altavilla is 8-8 with a 4.36 ERA and one save in 124 career games (one start) for the Seattle Mariners (2016-20), San Diego Padres (2020-21) and Kansas City Royals (2024). Castro, 30, sustained the season-ending knee injury during the ninth inning of Wednesday's 9-4 road victory against the New York Mets. Castro has no decisions and a 7.50 ERA in six relief appearances this year. He is 22-28 with a 4.24 ERA and 14 saves in 425 games (four starts) over 11 seasons with seven teams. --Field Level Media
