Andrew Schulz cast as Hong Kong-born Dan Hibiki in live-action 'Street Fighter'
[Source] American comedian and podcaster Andrew Schulz has been tapped to play Hong Kong–born martial artist Dan Hibiki in Legendary Entertainment's upcoming live-action 'Street Fighter' movie. First introduced in Capcom's 1995 fighter 'Street Fighter Alpha,' Dan is canonically born in Hong Kong to Japanese parents and is known for his overconfident attitude and intentionally weak Saikyo-ryu style. The outspoken New Yorker, who is of Scottish, German and Irish descent, is cast alongside an ensemble that already includes Andrew Koji as Ryu, Noah Centineo as Ken, Jason Momoa as Blanka, Curtis '50 Cent' Jackson as Balrog, Callina Liang as Chun-Li and Roman Reigns, a Samoan wrestler, as Akuma. A Reddit thread criticizing Schulz's casting quickly gained traction, with the original poster writing, 'Well... Asian whitewashing is happening yet again...' The user continued, 'We know Dan is Asian, is it too much to ask for an Asian guy to play him in a live action movie? Live action is not like video games and cartoons, the audience is gonna expect the Asian guy to actually look like an Asian.' In a separate thread, another user wrote, 'Dan is of Asian descent. Therefore, it makes no sense to cast a white guy for the role, especially after the backlash Hollywood had for casting white actors in Asian roles during the past decade.' A reply in that discussion added, 'They're casting Roman Reigns, a Samoan, to play the Japanese man Akuma. I don't think they give a fuck.' Jason Momoa's 2-Word Response to New 'Street Fighter' Cast Member Is Perfect
A new version of Street Fighter is coming next year, and the cast is absolutely stacked. From Jason Momoa playing Blanka (yes, he'll be green), to 0 Cent as Balrog, this new Street Fighter movie could make us forget all about Jean-Claude Van Damme's version from 1994. And now, the movie has added yet another new cast member, a surprising name very familiar to the podcasting world. None other than comedian and podcast host, Andrew Schulz will play Dan Hibiki, which, as World of Reel noted, is generally considered "he most annoying fighter in the Street Fighter roster." As the news of his Street Fighter casting was revealed, Schulz posted on Instagram, "Mom and Dad, I did tell you playing this game all night was more important than doing homework." Street Fighter co-star Jason Momoa jumped into the comments of Schulz's post with the perfect reaction. Momoa simply said, "My man." Fans of the 2017 (and later 2021) Justice League will recall that Momoa's Aquaman used this as something of a catchphrase, but now, this is clearly just something Momoa says all the time because he's Jason Momoa. Schulz, meanwhile, will be making his debut in a major blockbuster. While Schulz has previous film and TV roles, this is easily his most high-profile role yet. Currently, Schulz is the co-host of the mega-popular podcast Flagrant, which he shares with Akaash Singh, AlexxMedia, and Mark Gagnon. Recently, Schulz's Netflix special LIFE detailed, hilariously, how he became a Momoa's 2-Word Response to New 'Street Fighter' Cast Member Is Perfect first appeared on Men's Journal on Jun 28, 2025
