Louisville baseball sees dream season end vs Coastal Carolina. 3 takeaways from Omaha
OMAHA, NE. — Louisville baseball's incredible postseason run came to an end Wednesday afternoon when the Cardinals ran into a buzzsaw of a program in Coastal Carolina. The Chanticleers' 26-game winning streak continued with an 11-3 win over the Cardinals in the College World Series semifinals at Charles Schwab Field. U of L (42-24) had worked its way through the elimination bracket to earn its first meeting with the Chanticleers since 2002, matching the program's best CWS appearance. Advertisement "I hate losing today. Don't get me wrong," Louisville coach Dan McDonnell said. "I wanted to coach them tomorrow. But it's hard for me not to be filled with joy for how this season went and how we got back into this place and made a good run at it." The Cardinals got off to a slow start and, despite their history of rallying, couldn't recover from the damage to close out their season. After ending the regular season with a 2-1 ACC series loss to Wake Forest, the Cardinals went 7-3 in the NCAA Tournament. "I know we surprised a lot of people, but we always knew we had it in us. We just brought it out at the right time," Eddie King Jr. said. "I think this team is just so resilient, just the things that we did all year, even guys fighting injuries like Alex (Alicea), (Garret) Pike. It just goes to show this group is really special. We have a lot of talent, and we proved it this year." Coastal Carolina moves on to play LSU in the national championship series, which begins Saturday. Advertisement Here are three takeaways from Louisville's season-ending loss to Coastal Carolina: Digging an early hole All signs pointed to the CWS semifinal game being a blowout when the Chanticleers scored six runs in the first inning. Louisville pitcher Colton Hartman allowed a leadoff hit to Caden Bodine before hitting the next two batters to load the bases with none out. A two-RBI single and walk reloaded the bases when Hartman got pulled for Trinity product Jake Schweitzer. Four more runs and two hits later, the Cardinals got the final out on a 6-3 play. Coastal Carolina batted around in the first inning, creating a 6-0 deficit for the Cardinals to try to overcome. Advertisement "They just get right out of the gate, and they just put that pressure on you," McDonnell said of the Chanticleers. Louisville held Coastal Carolina scoreless for three innings before the Chanticleers added four runs in the fifth and sixth innings. Louisville shows fight in sixth inning True to form, the Cardinals wouldn't go away quietly. Down 8-0, after giving up two more runs in the bottom of the fifth, Louisville strung together three one-out hits with Tague Davis' double scoring Jake Munroe for the team's first run. Pike and Kamau Neighbors each had RBI singles to trim the deficit to 8-3. But the two couldn't add to the Cardinals' scoring effort as Coastal Carolina recorded the final out to center field. Advertisement Struggles with strike zone After using six arms against Oregon State, Louisville threw seven pitchers against the Chanticleers. The group hit four batters, which is the most in a game during the Cardinals' CWS appearance, with five walks in the first six innings. The miscues were costly as back-to-back hit batters in the bottom of the sixth inning allowed the Chanticleers to go up, 10-3, with two out. Peter Michael entered the game in the seventh inning for the Cardinals and held Coastal Carolina to an earned run on one hit with a walk and three strikeouts. Ty Starke relieved him in the eighth and got the final out without giving up a run, leaving one Coastal Carolina runner stranded. Hartman, whose last appearance was against Wake Forest on May 17, absorbed the loss after allowing five earned runs on two hits with a walk and two hit batters without getting an out in the first inning. Waterford did have the chances to open the scoring in this one but just couldn't take them, with tonight's win, the Hoops' fifth in a row over the men from the south east, extending their lead by another two points and out to 11 with just 12 games remaining. 11 minutes ago Full-time: Cork City 0 - Athletic 0 No goals to speak of in Turners Cross! Kitt Nelson's chance just before the break was probably the best opportunity of the game. It's turning into a night for the goalkeepers with both kept busy and so far, keeping their sides in it, with Rovers' Michael Noonan and Waterford's Rowan McDonald both seeing efforts saved since the restart. On a side note, the official attendance here has been confirmed as 4,014, which is the club's lowest home league attendance so far this year. The Hoops need a spark here and Stephen Bradley has introduced Jack Byrne and Rory Gaffney with 25 minutes left on the clock, Dylan Watts and Graham Burke come off. 42 minutes ago 73' Where Cork are getting joy down the left, are reaping rewards down the right. A corner causes some bother before Freddie Anderson can clear and Evan McLaughlin wins a pressure-relieving free. Rio Shipston and Josh Fitzpatrick replace Greg Bolger and Matt Kiernan for Cork. Meanwhile, Stephen Kenny introduces Kian Leavy and Chris Forrester for Elbouzedi and Baggley. 46 minutes ago 69' Better play from Cork as Evan McLaughlin feeds Seani Maguire who cut the ball back into the box. Sean Hoare did well to smash it away to the safety of the sideline. A penalty appeal from the Rebels faithful falls on deaf ears. 49 minutes ago 67' Mason Melia's night comes to an end as Aidan Keena enters the fray. It was an unusually quiet night for the Saints marksman who really only managed one shot at goal in the form of a first-half header that cleared the crossbar. 51 minutes ago 65' Ger Nash turns to his bench again as he replaces Sean Murray with Evan McLaughlin. Murray had a fine game in midfield where he dictated play alongside Greg Bolger. Possibly unlucky not to score either! 53 minutes ago Dan McDonnell spots a triple alteration from Joey O'Brien in the 65th-minute: A treble change from Shels and one of their new arrivals - Tyreke Wilson - sends in a cross that Odubeko heads wide under no pressure. Kerr McInroy and Evan Caffrey have also come into the fray.

Louisville baseball tops Oregon State, reaches CWS semifinal. 3 takeaways from Omaha
OMAHA, NE. — Revenge was served hot on Tuesday afternoon. On an 80-degree overcast day with thunderstorms looming, Eddie King Jr.'s sacrifice fly scored Alex Alicea to give Louisville baseball its first win over Oregon State, 7-6, during the second-round elimination game at Charles Schwab Field. King finished with two hits, three RBI and countless chants of his name before and after his final at-bat. Advertisement "I struck out on a call I didn't like," Jake Munroe said. "I was upset about it, did a little 360, saw Eddie, and I said, 'Oh, yeah, we're good.' That's the special thing about this lineup." The Cardiac Cardinals (42-23) flipped the script on Oregon State after the Beavers' 4-3 walk-off win to open the College World Series on Friday. But they had momentum on their side and fended off Oregon State's ninth-inning rally, keeping their season alive. Scoring the game-winning run was a moment of redemption for Alicea, who had a crucial error in the top of the ninth inning. His failed fielding attempt allowed the Beavers to score two runs and tie the game before the Cardinals retired the next three batters. Alicea drew a leadoff walk and moved up on two Oregon State errors — catcher's interference and a mishandled bunt. After the game, Alicea was given the team's MVP shirt. Advertisement "I knew when Alex got on in the ninth, we win this game, the shirt's going to Alex," U of L coach Dan McDonnell said. "Nobody felt worse than he did, and believe me, as his coach, I have to admit I'm responsible for the way he attacks that ball. ... I feel awful as the coach. My star shortstop feels awful. I'm obviously not wanting to lose this game for a lot of reasons, but there's no way I want Alex to blame himself." Tucker Biven (5-0) earned the win for Louisville after holding Oregon State to one hit and fanning two in the final inning. Biven entered the game with a 2-0 pitch count, two on and none out. "Tucker Biven is the guy that walks up to (pitching coach Roger) Williams with his cleats on in the seventh and says, 'I'm pitching tonight, like, I'm ready. I'm going down there,'" McDonnell said. "It wasn't like we told Tucker to go down there. ... It's not easy to take the ball out of his hands. But how do you not love that in a pitcher?" U of L moves on to play Coastal Carolina in the CWS semifinals at 2 p.m. Wednesday. Advertisement Here are three takeaways from Louisville's win over Oregon State: Brennyn Cutts comes up big in second start Brennyn Cutts had only one other start at Louisville — a 14-10 loss against California — when his name was called in a must-win game against Oregon State. The Indiana State transfer started his outing by giving up a leadoff hit to Trent Caraway but then buckled down by striking out the next three batters. Cutts gave up a two-run homer to Jacob Krieg in the top of the fourth inning but finished with a season-high seven strikeouts. Cutts, Biven and the Cardinals' pitching staff combined to hold Oregon State to six runs (five earned) on nine hits with 13 strikeouts and six walks. They stranded 12 Beavers on base. Advertisement "We've pitched our tail off this postseason, so I'm really happy for this group," McDonnell said. Bringing out the big bats Louisville scored in three of the first four innings to build a 4-2 lead. King started it with a two-out RBI single in the bottom of the first inning. After a 1-2-3 second inning, Munroe added a two-run bomb that went 394 feet with a 104 exit velocity. It was Munroe's fourth homer of the postseason and 13th this season. He'd previously hit three in the super regional series against Miami. King continued his postseason dominance with a ground-rule double but was left stranded on a flyout before his big moment six innings later. "I'm just grateful that I'm in the position that I'm in, and I just want to take advantage of every moment I get," he said. "Just hearing chants like that in a moment like that, it warms my heart. And I'm so glad that it could be for Louisville." Advertisement Zion Rose tallied his 13th homer of the season to lead off the bottom of the fourth, going 368 feet, for a 4-2 lead. Louisville finished with 10 hits. Minimized damage Louisville's 4-2 lead was in jeopardy when Justin West walked the leadoff batter, gave up a hit and hit another batter to load the bases in the top of the sixth inning. The series of events led to a mound visit from Williams. West responded by striking out the next batter before the Cardinals got the next two outs. Louisville only allowed one run on a fielder's choice, stranding two Beavers to close out the top half of the inning with the 4-3 advantage. Advertisement West threw three innings and held Oregon State to one earned run on one hit with one walk. He fanned three. Up next: Louisville to play Coastal Carolina The Cardinals are two wins from the national championship series. They face Coastal Carolina in the semifinals at 2 p.m. Wednesday. A win over the Chanticleers, who haven't lost in the CWS bracket, would cause the teams to play again Thursday at a time yet to be determined. Has Coastal Carolina won College World Series? Chanticleers aiming for another title
When the College World Series began just a week ago, Coastal Carolina was looked at by many to be the team that could blow up eight-team CWS bracket. After 12 total games played at Charles Schwab Field Omaha, the Chanticleers have done just that. Advertisement Riding its nation-leading 26-game win streak, the third longest in Division I baseball in the last five years, Coastal Carolina has returned to the CWS championship series with wins in Omaha over Arizona, No. 8 Oregon State and Louisville (to say nothing of the Chanticleers' super regional sweep of No. 4 Auburn). Next up is No. 6 LSU in the finals, which get underway on June 21 at 7 p.m. ET. REQUIRED READING: College World Series bracket: Scores, schedule, teams, times, TV channel for CWS The Chanticleers' run in Omaha has been far from impressive and garnered praise from all around the college baseball world, including Louisville coach Dan McDonnell, who called Coastal Carolina an "efficient," "well-oiled machine" team after losing to the Chanticleers in the CWS semifinals. Entering the best-of-three championship series, Coastal Carolina leads all teams at the CWS with 24 runs scored and the second-best pitching staff ERA at 3.00. The Chanticleers now look to add to their trophy case and end a five-year stretch of an SEC team winning it all in Omaha. Advertisement Here's what to know about the Chanticleers' history in the CWS championship: Has Coastal Carolina baseball won a national championship? Yes, Coastal Carolina baseball has won the College World Series once in program history, which came in its first trip to Omaha in 2016. The Chanticleers' national championship was historic in several facets: It was the first national title in program history; the first NCAA national championship for the Big South (then Coastal Carolina's conference); and marked the first time since Minnesota in 1956 that a team making its College World Series debut won it all. In that 2016 CWS championship series, Coastal Carolina reverse-swept Arizona, winning 2-1, to be the last team standing in Omaha. Advertisement "We're not the most talented team in America. We're just the national champion," former Coastal Carolina coach Gary Gilmore said. "That's all that matters." He added: "This program has been a lot better than people give it credit for. They thought we played in a small conference and couldn't get this done. This bunch wanted to prove everybody wrong." REQUIRED READING: Coastal Carolina vs Arizona: Revisiting Chanticleers' 2016 CWS title win over Wildcats Coastal Carolina College World Series history Coastal Carolina has a miniscule history with the CWS championship — albeit a successful one. Advertisement Two wins vs. LSU would make Coastal Carolina just the fourth team since the best-of-three championship series was added to the CWS format in 2003 — joining South Carolina in 2011, Arizona in 2012 and UCLA in 2013 — to win the national championship with a perfect 10-0 postseason record. Here's a breakdown of how the Chanticleers have fared in their trips to the CWS finals: Coastal Carolina NCAA baseball tournament schedule To make the College World Series, Coastal Carolina won the Conway Regional and Auburn Super Regional with a perfect 5-0 record. The Chanticleers won the Conway Regional with wins over No. 4 regional seed Fairfield (10-2) and No. 3 seed ECU, twice (18-7 and 1-0, respectively). They then beat No. 4 national seed Auburn 7-6 and 4-1, respectively. Advertisement The Chanticleers have not lost a beat in Omaha, going a perfect 3-0 in the winner's bracket of Bracket 1 play with wins over Arizona, No. 8 Oregon State and Louisville. In its 11-3 CWS semifinal win over Louisville, Coastal Carolina led from the jump, plating six runs in the bottom of the first inning. For his part, Schnall there weren't any comparisons that came to mind between this team and the 2016 championship squad. "I wish I could give you an answer that you could really take off with, but I can't, no. It's different than the 2016 team. That 2016 lineup was so dangerous, 1 through 9 — power, speed, short game," Schnall said following the Chanticleers' win over Louisville. "This team is different. It's more grind, inside game, first to third, little things like that. And they play really high-level defense, even though we made two outfield errors this week. That's the only errors we made. We're fielding over .980 in the postseason which is pretty tough to do because you're in a lot of pressure situations" Advertisement Here's a game-by-game breakdown of how Coastal Carolina has advanced to the 2025 College World Series championship series: Game 1 (Winner's Bracket): (13) Coastal Carolina 7, Arizona 4 Game 2 (Winner's Bracket): (13) Coastal Carolina 6, (8) Oregon State 2 Game 3 (Winner's Bracket): (13) Coastal Carolina 11, Louisville 3 This article originally appeared on USA TODAY: Has Coastal Carolina baseball won College World Series?
