Analyst Reveals What Separates Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes From Other Top QBs

Analyst Reveals What Separates Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes From Other Top QBs originally appeared on Athlon Sports. With the NFL rankings for quarterbacks coming out recently, Kansas City Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes is still No. 1, despite a couple of down seasons. Granted, the Chiefs won a Super Bowl and went to another, but Patrick's stats aren't the usual ones we've seen from him, posting lower passing yards and touchdown totals while the interceptions have been double-digits for the past four years. Some have Josh Allen or Lamar Jackson and even Joe Burrow above Mahomes when it comes to the best quarterback in football, but ESPN's Dan Orlovsky has detailed exactly what makes Patrick better than his rivals. "The gap has never been this ridiculously big gap when it comes to Patrick, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, and Joe Burrow," Orlovsky said on ESPN's GetUp. "All three of those guys had better seasons last year than Patrick did, yes. But there is the reality that Patrick, not once, not twice, but three or four times, has played his absolute best when it's been needed the most." "Those other three guys haven't necessarily done that. And so, is Patrick the best at the position? He's still the top dog when it comes to you got to go be your very best when it's needed the most. When it comes to the ability to play, those guys have always been kind of nipping at his heels." We can't argue with that. Plus, in 2023, Mahomes, in the playoffs, went into Highmark Stadium in Buffalo and beat Josh Allen, and then in the AFC Championship game, rolled into Baltimore and beat Lamar Jackson. Then we add in that Mahomes beat Allen again in 2024 in the playoffs (4-0 vs. Josh in the postseason), so that givers further credence to Orlovsky's thoughts on Patrick being No. 1. When push comes to shove, he gets it done, while the others haven't. It is really as simple as that, and until the chasing pack do it, or Mahomes falters in the big moments, the NFL's top dog will always reside in Kansas City. Ex NFL QB Reveals What Sets Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes Apart

Ex NFL QB Reveals What Sets Chiefs' Patrick Mahomes Apart originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The Kansas City Chiefs are still one of the top teams in the AFC and NFL. Even after a disappointing loss in February that prevented the NFL's first "three-peat," Patrick Mahomes and Co. could come back stronger next year after offseason moves. Advertisement Former NFL quarterback and current analyst Dan Orlovsky recently offered his take on what makes Mahomes so different from the other top QBs in the league. "The gap has never been this ridiculously big gap when it comes to Patrick, Lamar Jackson, Josh Allen, and Joe Burrow," Orlovsky said. "All three of those guys had better seasons last year than Patrick did, yes. But there is the reality that Patrick, not once, not twice, but three or four times, has played his absolute best when it's been needed the most. Those other three guys haven't necessarily done that. And so, is Patrick the best at the position? "He's still the top dog when it comes to you got to go be your very best when it's needed the most. When it comes to the ability to play, those guys have always been kind of nipping at his heels." Mahomes was recently tabbed as the league's top quarterback by ESPN's Field Yates in his annual rankings, although he did note that the former Texas Tech Red Raiders' signal caller's "grip is loosening slightly." Advertisement "Mahomes' grip on the top spot is loosening slightly. After dominating the voting with back-to-back No. 1 rankings in convincing fashion, Mahomes garnered around 60% of the first-place votes this year, which is still impressive but well short of last year, when he received all but one first-place vote," Yates wrote. "He has finished eighth in QBR the past two years; from 2018 through 2022, he finished first or second four times. Rarely does Mahomes look as frazzled as he did vs. Philadelphia in Super Bowl LIV." ESPN's Dan Orlovsky admits he was 'furious' after losing Sports Emmy to Charles Barkley

Not a ton of people pay attention to the Sports Emmys, but ESPN's Dan Orlovsky apparently had some feelings going into this year's show. During an appearance on "SI Media with Jimmy Traina," the former NFL quarterback provided an unusually candid walkthrough of his emotions when he lost Outstanding Personality/Studio Analyst to future coworker Charles Barkley in May. Put simply, he wasn't happy: 'Of course I was [furious] ... I was like 'Man, I really believe that I've had a strong run here. I really believe that I've separated myself.' I take pride in that. And I know who I was going up against, the greats of the great. And so I was like, 'I feel very confident about analyst.' I really did. And so when Charles won, I texted him. I have no business having Charles Barkley's number, by the way, but I do, so I texted him, and I said something along the lines of 'Will you stop winning?' And he responded back with a laughing emoji face, 'You know it's a team effort.' And so, that one bothered me. Barkley won the award for the sixth time of his broadcasting career, beating out Orlovsky, Nate Burleson of CBS, Ryan Clark of ESPN and Kirk Herbstreit of ESPN. Orlovsky was the only nominee who had not previously won the award. Advertisement Orlovsky, an 11-year NFL veteran, has worked at ESPN since 2018 and has appeared all over the network's football coverage. He was part of three different nominations going into the show between the analyst award, the George Wensel Technical Achievement Award (for a VR project) and Outstanding Studio Show – Daily (for ESPN's "NFL Live"). Orlovsky said he originally didn't want to go after the nominations came out, due to concerns about going 0-for-3, but was convinced by his wife and ESPN. After Barkley won, he said "I immediately go to my wife like a child. I want to go home." His project fell short in the technical achievement award as well, and was apparently pessimistic about "NFL Live's" chances after another ESPN show, ESPN's "College GameDay" won the award for Outstanding Studio Show — Weekly. However, that award ended up working out for his people: "I was like, 'No way ESPN will win two in a row.' So I'm just sitting there going, 'Well, we're not going to win. I was here for the night, blah, blah, blah.' And then we win. And I was like, 'Oh my God.' I was thoroughly shocked when the show actually won because of the way it went. "But I thought, analyst, I would have a chance. And I turned into a baby." All in all, a very human night for Orlovsky, who joked with Traina that it would have been great if he had made a big scene walking out of the show with his wife. He also acknowledged it feels like he hasn't won a trophy since a college bowl game and is a "wildly intense and wildly competitive human," which is how one gets invested in an award such as this one. Advertisement We'll see if he has better luck next year. At the very least, he'll be on the same team as Barkley, whose "Inside the NBA" show will be syndicated on ESPN after TNT lost its NBA rights.

Dan Orlovsky reveals how close he came to leaving ESPN after CBS flirtation

Dan Orlovsky was serious about leaving ESPN. Orlovsky said he nearly left the network before reaching a deal over the past several weeks during a recent appearance on the 'SI Media With Jimmy Traina' podcast. 'I came close to very seriously entertaining other places,' Orlovsky said. '… I've worked my absolute tail off for six or seven years now to get to that point this summer. I didn't want to make a decision 'just cause' or emotionally or in the moment. So yeah, I tried to take my time to be very conscious of it and open-minded to every element or opportunity.' Dan Orlovsky is staying with ESPN Dan Orlovsky/Instagram The network announced Wednesday that it had inked a multi-year agreement with the 'NFL Live' and 'Monday Night Football' analyst after Orlovsky hinted in February that he could leave the company this summer. 'There was a lot of really really deep conversations had with myself and my wife and our kids and other places and coaching,' the former NFL quarterback said. 'And it's not necessarily the next step for 2025 or 2026. It's what would be the next step for five years from now? Seven years from now. I worked really hard. I'm really proud to say that. It's a trademark of who I am. And I wanted to, for a lack of a better term, take advantage of that.' Orlovsky previously discussed joining CBS to be part of their Big Ten coverage, but opted against fully pursuing the opening as he waited to see ESPN's proposal. 'It wasn't going to be just a college opportunity,' Orlovsky said of the possibility of joining CBS. 'There was going to be, maybe not like that day, but in the future, whether it was a month from then, six months from then, a year from then, it was going to be an all-encompassing opportunity, and that was really enticing.' Dan Orvlosky is sticking around ESPN. Melissa Rawlins / ESPN Images Orlovsky is a rising star at the network as he enters his sixth season on 'NFL Live.' The former UConn QB spent 12 seasons in the NFL, appearing in 26 career games and started in 12 during stints with the Lions, Buccaneers, Colts and Texans.

Dan Orlovsky contract: NFL analyst agrees to long-term extension to stay at ESPN

One of ESPN's biggest NFL analysts is sticking with the company for years to come. Dan Orlovsky is in agreement on a long-term contract extension with the network, he confirmed Wednesday. Front Office Sports originally reported both sides were close. Orlovsky confirmed the deal in a tweet Wednesday. Orlovsky, 41, will continue to serve in his normal role at the network under his new deal. He'll appear on shows like "NFL Live" and "SportsCenter," and will also serve as an occasional analyst on "Monday Night Football." Advertisement Financial details of Orlovsky's new contract were not revealed. After a seven-year career as a quarterback in the NFL, Orlovsky joined ESPN in 2018. He's worked his way up at the network, becoming one of its biggest NFL voices. Over his NFL career, Orlovsky mostly served as a backup. He was drafted by the Detroit Lions in the fifth round of the 2005 NFL Draft and spent his first two years in the NFL in Detroit. He also saw time with the Houston Texans, Indianapolis Colts and Tampa Bay Buccaneers before returning to Detroit for his final season in 2015. In 26 NFL games — 12 of which were starts — Orlovsky finished with 15 touchdowns against 13 interceptions and a 58.2 completion percentage. Advertisement He's most well known for an on-field blunder. During his first career start in 2008, Orlovsky took a snap near his own end zone and inadvertently ran out of bounds while trying to throw a pass. The Lions were charged with a safety, and wound up losing the contest 12-10. That was the same year the Lions failed to win a single regular-season game, and finished the year 0-16.
