Bus service connects Whitefish to Billings

Jul. 13—A new bus route out of Whitefish began at the start of July, connecting the city directly to Missoula, Butte, Bozeman, Livingston, Big Timber and Billings four days a week. "We're excited for this opportunity to connect cities that we weren't able to connect to before," said Kevin Pursey, director of operations at Jefferson Lines, the service provider. Jefferson Lines — a family-owned bus company rooted in the Midwest — was approached by the state of Montana after Flathead Transit discontinued its Whitefish to Missoula service at the end of June. The Whitefish to Missoula route is key in western Montana, connecting towns such as Kalispell, Lakeside, Polson, Pablo, St. Ignatius, Ravalli, Arlee and Evaro. The new route will continue servicing those communities while expanding eastward. "The city of Whitefish is grateful Jefferson Lines has stepped in to offer an important alternative form of transportation between Whitefish and many other Montana communities," Whitefish City Manager Dana Smith said. Prior to the Whitefish to Billings route, Jefferson Lines had a schedule running between Billings to Spokane that stopped in Bozeman and Butte. That route will continue to run. The service is only available Friday through Monday, but eventually, Pursey said it would be great to have a bus running every day. Improving the availability of bus services is identified in Whitefish's Climate Action Plan and Transportation Plan to reduce vehicle trips into the community, Smith said. While it is not a commuter bus system, which is still needed, she said, the Whitefish to Billings route plays a "critical role in the overall transportation system in our community and others." The Whitefish to Billings route operates Friday through Monday, leaving Whitefish at 8:30 a.m., departing Missoula at 12:30 p.m. and arriving in Billings at 6:20 p.m. The Billings to Whitefish route operates Thursday through Sunday, leaving the Jefferson Lines Depot in Billings at 11:30 a.m., departing Missoula at 5:30 p.m. and arriving in Whitefish at 9:10 p.m. For more information and to book tickets, visit Reporter Kate Heston may be reached at 758-4450 or kheston@

Silver Alert issued after 32-year-old goes missing in Winnipeg

The Winnipeg Police have issued a Silver Alert and are seeking the public's assistance in locating Alexa Smith, a 32-year-old woman who was last seen on Sunday morning near Harbison Avenue West and Watt Street. Smith is white, 4'11, heavier build with short blonde hair and blue eyes. She was last seen wearing a red T-shirt, beige sweatpants and light runners. Kiana Pott, Smith's younger sister, says she is concerned about her. "She sometimes is nonverbal. She doesn't talk much. She's good, but she's been in and out of the hospital for a little bit, so she could be going on a mental break right now and just wandered away," said Pott. Smith's mother, Dana Smith, says the police have been looking for her daughter, but so far has not heard of any sightings of her. A Silver Alert is activated when a vulnerable adult is reported missing. Anyone with information on Smith's whereabouts can contact the Winnipeg Police Service Missing Persons Unit at 204-986-6250.

Whitefish looks at garbage rate increase

May 5—Whitefish City Council on Monday is finally set to discuss an increase in garbage collection fees after a previous Council meeting with the item was canceled. Garbage rates are set to increase by 18%. The monthly fee for residential customers with a bear resistant cart would increase from $17.25 to $20.34. City Council meets at 7:10 p.m. at City Hall, 418 E. Second St. The last time rates were increased was June 2022. If approved, rates would increase effective May 15. Rates would also go up by 3.25% in both 2026 and 2027. Commercial accounts would also see a similar increase, however, the current $5 administrative fee per business would increase to $7 per utility account with one business and $14 per account with more than one business. Republic Services provides the garbage hauling service, while the city bills for the service and provides contact for customers. Garbage service is provided to about 4,100 residential accounts and 470 commercial accounts. City Manager Dana Smith, in a memo to the Council, said that the rate increase is necessary to ensure that the solid waste fund remains financially stable by covering costs of operation and planning for future rising costs. A REQUEST to operate a bar/lounge at 16 Baker Ave. is also before Council. Casey Malmquist is requesting a conditional use permit to allow for a full liquor license to be used at an existing ice cream business Clydesdale Creamery. The building is located in the WB-3 general business district which requires a conditional use permit to use a liquor license. Also on the agenda, Council is set to provide authorization to bid work as part of the Armory Park Master Plan. The park is the city's largest at 30 acres, and in 2019, the city's park board updated the plan for the park, outlining future improvements. In fiscal year 2025, the Parks and Recreation Department is set to complete the installation of a small children's playground and some identified park amenities. The department is planning to bid construction of a storage garage foundation and drainage improvements and well development for the WAG Dog Park that is part of the larger Armory Park. Council will vote on a resolution updating its ethics policy, which was first adopted in 1997. Changes are being made to bring the policy in line with Montana law. Saint Mary's school raises $30k to fight childhood cancer

ELK COUNTY (WTAJ) — Many schools participate in their own mini version of Penn State's THON and Saint Mary's Middle School is no different. They held their 5th Annual Mini-THON Friday to support the fight against pediatric cancer. 'Our small town has had its share of children battling this disease. So, we love coming together as a school to try to raise money to find a cure,' 7th Grade Teacher Dana Smith said. At the end of the event, the school revealed the total amount the school raised. This year's amount was $30,885.02. Teachers say their students save their money because this is one of their favorite events of the school year. 'They save their allowance money for it. They realize that what they're doing is bigger than them because we bring in people from the community to talk about their experiences with childhood cancer and the children while they're young they're still able to understand the importance of what they're able to do today,' 8th Grade Teacher Danielle Brody said. During the event, the school invites community members to talk to the students about their experience with childhood cancer, so the students gain a better understanding of what they are raising money for. 'I was asked to come in today to give a speech on my son Reece who was diagnosed 18 years ago with childhood cancer he was diagnosed with bilateral wilms tumor which is a very rare and somewhat aggressive cancer for children. It's very important because what these kids are doing today is raising awareness to childhood cancer and also raising funding for the research for childhood cancer,' guest speaker, Jennifer Scolari said. The students held the event all school day and were able to use their money to buy tickets for items such as glow sticks, snacks and raffles. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
