Popular Ipoh food vendor defends RM35 Khao Mok chicken rice pricing following online criticism

A Malaysian man recently criticised a popular food vendor based in Ipoh, Perak, for allegedly charging exorbitant prices for a Thai-style chicken and rice dish. The vendor, Dania Sedek, previously went viral in 2023 for selling an omelette dish priced at RM13. Sharing his frustration on Threads, the man urged local businesses to stop 'normalising' inflated prices for what is essentially a simple dish. In a screenshot attached to the post, the Khao Mok-style chicken with rice, served with sauce and toppings, was priced at RM35 — labelled as the 'tour price'. 'Yes, you can say I'm not the target market. If one cannot afford it, then don't buy it,' he wrote. He also warned that other vendors may follow suit and increase their prices, encouraged by the support and hype such businesses receive. On TikTok, Dania received pushback over the pricing, with the comments echoing similar sentiments as the man. Dania has since responded to these comments in another TikTok post, justifying the expensive pricing by stating the use of good quality ingredients, hygienic food preparation and fair wages for her staff. She further explained that her establishment does not 'mark up' costs at a whim and only prices her food following the actual value she and her team have 'worked on'. 'We understand that not everyone will agree but we are confident that once customers taste the food themselves, looking at several aspects, InsyaAllah, they will understand why,' she concluded the TikTok video.

Grounded and hungry, Dania-Zi Yu chase Asian Juniors glory

KUALA LUMPUR: Once considered unknowns, Malaysia's girls' doubles Dania Sofea Zaidi-Low Zi Yu are now carrying the weight of expectation as they head into the Badminton Asia Junior Championships (BAJC) in Surakarta, Indonesia. The world No. 213 shot to prominence last year when they defied the odds to win silver at the World Junior Championships in China, and now, all eyes are on them again. "We feel the pressure this time," admitted Dania. "People expect us to do well after our silver medal. It feels like a responsibility." Zi Yu echoed her partner's sentiment. "Some strong pairs from last year are no longer around, but there are still tough opponents. We can't let our guard down." The BAJC kicks off with the mixed team event from July 18-22, followed by the individual competition from July 23-27 — with second seeds Dania-Zi Yu to spearhead Malaysia's challenge. Since their breakout performance, the pair have proven it wasn't a one-off. They captured the Slovak Open title in May, reached the semi-finals in Slovenia and Austria, and recently clinched the Malaysia Junior International Challenge crown. That consistent run has boosted their confidence and sharpened their game, thanks to more exposure abroad and support from the BA of Malaysia (BAM). "We've played in more tournaments this year and that has really helped us become more solid as a pair," said Dania. Zi Yu, although not a full-time BAM player, is currently training under its programme — and said that's made a big difference. "Sparring with the national seniors has really helped. It's full-time training here. Outside BAM, we'd have to juggle school and practice." Despite now being seen as medal contenders, the pair are staying grounded. "The competition will be tough. These are the best players from each country, so we'll take it one match at a time," said Dania.

Dania eyes double returns in slight change of role at Asian Juniors

PETALING JAYA: Shuttler Dania Sofea Zaidi (pic) will be going for a double victory in the Asian Junior Championships with a slight change in her role. The 17-year-old Dania has dropped the girls' singles event and will play in the doubles with Low Zi Yu and mixed doubles with Datu Anif Datu Asra in the meet in Solo, Indonesia, from July 18 to 27. At the last edition in Yogyakarta, she did not play in the girls' doubles but after reaching the final of the world junior championships with Zi Yu last year, they are set to be one of the favourites at the Asian meet. The Badminton Association of Malaysia (BAM) also named Slovak Open runners-up Noraqilah Maisarah Ramdan-Nur Aina Maisarah Hatta in the girls' doubles event. The others in the girls' team are Lee Mun, Oo Shan Zi, Eng Ler Qi, Lim Zhi Shin, Nicole Tan, and Nicole Chau. In the boys' category, the tall Razeeq Danial Rosli, who won the National Under-18 Championships last year, will be one of the key players. He will be supported by Ayu Fu Sheng, Kong Wei Xiang, Lim Boon Le, Datu Anif Datu Asrah, Loh Zi Heng, Zulwaqqarizal Ahmad, Damien Ling, Shazmir Shahrul, and Tan Zhi Yang as Malaysia aim for a strong showing at the regional meet. The team event will be contested using the new relay scoring system, similar to the format introduced by the Badminton World Federation (BWF) at the World Junior Championships in Nanchang, China, last September. In last year's edition, Malaysia returned with a bronze medal in the team event. In the individual competitions, Aaron Tai and Kang Khai Xing bagged silver in the boys' doubles, while Siti Zulaikha Azmi (girls' singles) and Carmen Ting-Ong Xin Yee (girls' doubles) each secured bronze medals.
