The VERY annoying feature at Daniel Johns' beachside property that is driving his neighbours insane - as the rock star prepares to build his new dream home
Daniel Johns has knocked down his iconic Newcastle mansion - and his neighbours haven't held back about the looming rebuild. The former Silverchair frontman made headlines this week for demolishing the home he once described as a '70s style porn palace' on Charlotte Street in the city's upscale Merewether neighbourhood, and splitting the block in two. Johns is selling one half of the block, and keeping the other side to build his new ocean-view property. Daily Mail Australia understands, via public planning documents, that he has engaged Central Coast architect Stephen Sherd, of Studio Alura, to handle the build. While Johns remains a beloved figure on Charlotte Street, he has at times raised hackles among his neighbours. Patricia Woods, who is a music teacher and full-time carer directly across the street from Johns, has pleaded with the singer to sort out one particular issue. When approached by Daily Mail Australia on Wednesday, she said: 'Can you please pass on a message to Daniel? I've been asking him to trim his hedges for about three or four years so we can see the ocean again.' Ms Woods, 54, said she has reached out to Johns, the City of Newcastle Council, and even asked the surveyors and engineers who recently visited the property to do something about the hedges. But her pleas have so far fallen on deaf ears. 'They say he loves those hedges and that he won't cut them,' she said. 'But they aren't meant to be above 1.8m in height, and they're well over that - like three metres! 'The hedges really annoy me. And someone once told me that I don't own the view, and I know that, but we used to be able to see the whales (as they migrate)... I am going to ring the real estate agents and ask them (to do something).' Ms Woods said she also hopes Johns' new home has 'better soundproofing', due to the regular sounds of musical instruments and frequent parties. Despite her gripes, Ms Woods is relieved Johns shelved supposed original plans to subdivide the lot and 'build units on one side and a house for himself on the other'. She insisted the 46-year-old artist is a 'much loved' member of the community, who is largely reclusive. 'You hardly ever see him, but he does give a wave if he ever pops up to the letter box, but he's not out having neighbourly conversations,' she said. 'But he is really kind and sweet. 'He's often out of town, but you know he's home when the expensive cars start appearing in the street. That's when you know he's around - when all his celebrity mates start turning up.' Another Newcastle source said Johns is 'like a ghost', although other neighbours say he has been seen inspecting the empty block since its demolition in May. During the times Johns vanishes, Ms Woods said locals whisper he might be 'back in rehab'. In March 2022, Johns publicly entered rehab to deal with mental health issues and alcohol dependence, following a car accident and high-range drink-driving charge. Johns rocketed to international fame after starting Silverchair with fellow Novocastrians Ben Gillies and Chris Joannou as teenagers in 1992. In 2011 the band confirmed an 'indefinite hibernation', and, while Gillies and Joannou remain close, it's understood they no longer speak to Johns. The band remains beloved by Aussie music fans and is expected to poll highly in this weekend's Triple J Hottest 100 of Australian Songs countdown, as voted by listeners. Despite Johns' international fame - and an ill-fated marriage to UK-based Aussie star Natalie Imbruglia from 2003-2008 - he has clung to life in Merewether, where he was raised by a fruit-shop owner father and homemaker mother. He bought the original five-bedroom Charlotte Street home in 2000 for $1.4million. A 2022 Rolling Stone article described the interior as being littered with musical instruments and artworks he'd done himself. Our new aerial images of the demolition site show the dwelling and pool are long gone, but a few of those artworks remain - obscured from street view by the infamous hedges. Development application records show the recent knockdown cost Johns an estimated $145,000. Last year, he sold an investment property on Ranclaud Street, which he bought as a 17-year-old in 1996 for $360,000. Daily Mail Australia was told that he resides locally on a part-time basis while waiting for his new dream home to come together. In an advertisement for the block's sale, Johns said, 'This place has been a huge part of my life and creativity, but it's time for something new that reflects where I'm at now and what's next.' It was suggested he was at first keen to finally leave Merewether, revealing he had searched for a new home 'across the country - from Tasmania's wild coastlines to the tranquil towns of Southern New South Wales - for somewhere new to call home. 'But despite that exploration, nothing ever came close to this one. One place kept pulling him back. Charlotte Street, Merewether.'

Silverchair singer Daniel Johns offloads plot of land after demolishing his $1.4 million Newcastle home
Former Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns is seeking a major real estate win after listing a block of land on one of the most sought-after spots on the NSW coast. No price guide has been offered for the vacant lot in Merewether, a prestige beach suburb a mere 3km from the CBD of Newcastle. Johns created the opportunity after knocking down his old five-bedroom home on the site two years ago, which he bought back in 2000 for $1.4 million. The block has been split into two, with one for sale. According to the listing the elevated lot, only 1km from the famous beach nearby, offers ocean views and easy access to the suburb's upscale hospitality offerings, including cafes and 'beach bars'. From A-list scandals and red carpet mishaps to exclusive pictures and viral moments, subscribe to the DailyMail's new showbiz newsletter to stay in the loop. Johns demolished his old home to 'unlock the site's full potential'. He said in a statement, 'This place has been a huge part of my life and creativity, but it's time for something new that reflects where I'm at now and what's next.' The new sale comes after Johns sold another nearby investment property last year for a hefty $2.75 million - after listing it for $3 million. Still, the price was right since Johns had purchased the four-bedroom, two-bathroom home at age 17 for just $360,000 in May 1996. On Tuesday, reported that Johns also owns two other investment properties in Newcastle. Earlier this year, Daniel announced that he is taking a hiatus from social media, as he celebrated his 46th birthday. He posted to Instagram to mark the occasion, but added a cryptic message that implied he was in need of solitude, perhaps to work on a new art project. 'The beautiful thing about time, is that it is always in the eye of the beholder. Art is exactly the same,' the Australian rocker wrote. 'As an artist you never know what time it is. It's an ongoing quest to interpret happiness and sadness with a sprinkling of absurdity. It's drama. It's comedy. It's poetry. It's a song. It's cinema,' he continued. 'Everything is beautiful if you let it be.' Johns concluded the post: 'I have to go back in time to finalise something and as a result I won't be on socials, my team will keep an eye on things. I will have my phone. All is love'. The rock star has stayed largely out of the spotlight the past few years, after highly publicised legal and substance abuse issues. Johns and his former Silverchair bandmates rose to fame as as 15-year-olds and took the world by storm with their debut album Frogstomp in 1995, before splitting in 2011. The musicians have said they had 'drifted apart' from Johns since Silverchair disbanded.

Silverchair star Daniel Johns' huge move after demolishing home
Aussie singer Daniel Johns is selling off a block of land, just two months after demolishing his Newcastle home and splitting the site into two lots. Robinson Property's Amanda and Kirk Langlands are handling the sale of the 967.5 square metre Merewether vacant block with expressions of interest. 'For over three years, rock legend Daniel Johns searched across the country – from Tasmania's wild coastlines to the tranquil towns of southern NSW – for somewhere new to call home,' the 1/8 Charlotte Street listing reads. 'But despite all that exploration, nothing ever came close to this one. One place kept pulling him back. Charlotte Street, Merewether.' Billed as one of the area's 'most exclusive cul-de-sacs', the oversized block offers panoramic views stretching from Merewether Beach across the Pacific and out toward the Stockton dunes. Charlotte Street is located just 1.2 kilometres from the ocean baths, beach bars and cafes. 'This is your chance to secure what even one of Australia's most well-travelled couldn't walk away from,' the listing reads. 'It represents the pinnacle of coastal living. And yet, it remains quiet, private, and wonderfully elevated above it all … 'If you've been waiting for a sign to create your forever home by the sea, this is it. Opportunities this rare don't come twice.' Johns purchased the five bedroom property in 2000 for $1.4 million. In May, he knocked down the home after 25 years. The Silverchair frontman explained he demolished the house to 'unlock the site's full potential' and offer one of the two blocks to market. 'This place has been a huge part of my life and creativity, but it's time for something new that reflects where I'm at now and what's next,' Johns said in a statement supplied to the media. Last year, the rock star sold his long-time home in Merewether for a massive $2.75 million. According to property records a 17-year-old Johns bought the four-bedroom home that sits on Rancloud St for $360,000 in May 1996 as Silverchair was beginning to take the music world by storm. The home was one of several investment properties the musician bought. It was last listed for rent for $850 per week in July 2020. Johns also owns two properties nearby, according to property records, one of which is where he lives. Johns has been a savvy real estate investor. In 2016, he sold his top floor Bondi Beach apartments for a nice earner. Silverchair has sold over 10 million albums worldwide, with Johns also embarking on a successful solo career.

Daniel Johns lists vacant block after demolishing iconic Newcastle home
Loading content... Two months after demolishing the iconic Merewether pad he called home for 25 years, Daniel Johns has divided the land into two, keeping one site for himself and listing the other for sale. The 967.5 square metre vacant block at 1/8 Charlotte Street is listed for sale by expressions of interest with Robinson Property's Amanda and Kirk Langlands. The property has already attracted strong pre-market interest from buyers ahead of going live on July 14. "Even before going to market, we have had several enquiries, indicating that it will be very positively received," Ms Langlands said. "It's mainly locals who have known about it since we put the coming soon signboard up at the property. "Once it is opened to the broader market, we expect very strong interest." It is understood that the former Silverchair frontman plans to build a new "dream home" on the other block. Johns initially had plans to purchase a property outside of Newcastle, and spent three years scouting locations far and wide, from coastal areas in Tasmania to tranquil towns in southern NSW. However, the "irreplaceable position" on Charlotte Street kept pulling him back. The listing describes the vacant block as offering "the chance to secure what even one of Australia's most well-travelled couldn't walk away from". Positioned in a quiet cul-de-sac, the block has panoramic views stretching from Merewether beach across the Pacific Ocean and toward the Stockton dunes. The north-facing elevated block captures all-day sun and sea breezes and is ideal for a "cutting-edge architectural build or a timeless family sanctuary". The property is 1.2 kilometres from Merewether Ocean Baths and Merewether beach. "We've had enquiries from people wanting to build their dream home," she said. "People are drawn to the north-facing views and the privacy offered on that street, but I have found that it's a different type of buyer than those who want to live down on the flat in Merewether. "It offers that elevation, that sense of freedom, sense of space and privacy. "It is a magnificent position, up high and having that aspect looking over Merewether is what will sell it." End of an era In May, Johns demolished the 1970s five-bedroom home, which had served as a "private sanctuary and creative retreat for over two decades. He purchased the 1942-square-metre property in 2000 for $1.4 million. The home provided a space to write Silverchair's music post-2001, including the acclaimed Diorama and Young Modern albums. In a statement released in May, Johns explained his decision to knock down the house was to "unlock the site's full potential" and offer one of the two blocks to market. "This place has been a huge part of my life and creativity, but it's time for something new that reflects where I'm at now and what's next," Johns said in a statement supplied to the Newcastle Herald. Charlotte Street's top sales Only six properties have changed hands along Charlotte Street since 2016. A four-bedroom, three-bathroom house at 10 Charlotte Street, directly next door to Johns' former home, sold for $3.7 million on July 11 with Salt Property's Lyndall Allan. The highest price for a residential property on the cul-de-sac street was recorded in October 2021 with the $6.6 million transaction of a five-bedroom, three-bathroom house on 886 square metres at 18 Charlotte Street. The property included a swimming pool and the same panoramic outlook enjoyed from Johns' property. In November 2017, a three-bedroom house on 2317 square meters at 28 Charlotte Street sold for $4.275 million. Other top sales include 29 Charlotte Street ($2.85 million, July 2021) and 20 Charlotte Street ($2.2 million, February 2011).
