More than 700 people climb steps at Soldier Field to fight lung disease
More than 700 people braved the heat Sunday, climbing steps at Soldier Field to raise money for the fight against lung disease.
Some changes were made to the original 1,600-step route for the Fight for Air Climb this year to accommodate climbers in the extreme heat.
"We're letting our firefighters know that typically climb in full gear to drop those jackets, drop those tanks — they're heroes already," said Danielle Trojanek, executive director of the American Lung Association. "We just want to make sure that their safety is our first priority."
Nevertheless, many firefighters stuck to tradition and wore their full gear on the climb despite the high temperatures.
Local organizers with the American Lung Association said they raised $350,000 Sunday, and will continue raising money through the end of the month.
