Indiana County man arrested for tracking woman's car with Apple AirTag
An Indiana County man is facing charges after he allegedly tracked a woman's car with an Apple AirTag. Pennsylvania State Police in Indiana County said Danish Ali, 33, was arrested and charged with criminal use of communication facility, stalking and harassment Thursday. On Jan. 29 at around 8:00 p.m., a 32-year-old woman, reported that her Apple iPhone had alerted her that an AirTag was trying to connect to her phone while she was driving her vehicle. The victim said that she and her father searched her car for the AirTag, but couldn't find it. Police found the AirTag duct-taped to the back passenger-side wheel well. State police tracked the AirTag back to Ali. He told police he put the AirTag on the victim's car two days prior and without her knowledge in an attempt to find out where she was. How do you report an AirTag or other tracking device to state police?
(WTAJ) — Pennsylvania State Police are sharing some guidance on what victims of stalking or related crimes can do if they believe they're being unlawfully tracked. PSP said the act of using an AirTag or similar tracking device on someone's vehicle or property without their knowledge is breaking the law and will result in criminal charges. The push to make sure victims are safe just after an Indiana County man was arrested for allegedly taping a tracking device to his ex-girlfriend's car. Danish Ali, 33, was charged on Jan. 30 with a felony of criminal use of a communication facility and a misdemeanor charge of stalking. The charges were filed after Ali's ex-girlfriend came forward to PSP to report that her Apple iPhone alerted her to an AirTag that was trying to connect to her phone while she was driving. 'Severe Consequences' Pa. bill could give illegal immigrants the death penalty The victim told police that she and her father had searched her car, but were unable to find anything. Troopers then searched her car and discovered the tracking device taped onto the rear passenger side wheel well. Police were able to determine that it belonged to Ali through its registration, according to a report. PSP says to take the following steps if you believe that a tracking device has been placed on your vehicle or other property: Take a screen shot of the tracking device notification displayed on your cell phone; you can then provide this critical information to law enforcement. (For Apple AirTags, this notification should display the serial number of the AirTag and the last four digits of the registered owner's phone number.) Call 911. Report that you believe someone is unlawfully tracking your location and may be following you. The 911 operator can then dispatch a law enforcement officer to your location or will direct you to the nearest police station to report the incident to law enforcement. The Pennsylvania State Police will initiate an investigation and will work to immediately locate the tracking device and seize the device as evidence. Notify your trusted family members of what has occurred. 'With these recommendations, we hope to provide guidance for victims in what may be a very stressful and scary situation. We also hope that this guidance will serve as a deterrent to such criminal activity,' Pennsylvania State Police said.
