Western states lied about Iran's nuclear program – Russia's UN envoy

The US and Israel have spread disinformation about Iran's nuclear program as a pretext for attack, Russian Ambassador to the UN Vassily Nebenzia has said. Speaking at the UN Security Council on Tuesday, the diplomat condemned the strikes on Iranian nuclear sites as illegal under international law and said they had 'created a real threat' of radioactive contamination. Nebenzia noted that the reports of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), which carries out inspections in Iran, serve as proof of 'the absence of proliferation risks.' 'We want to emphasize that nowhere in the IAEA reports is there any mention of Iran converting its nuclear stockpiles for undeclared or military purposes,' Nebenzia said. The IAEA has found no evidence indicating the development of nuclear weapons by Iran. Therefore, all claims by Western delegations to the contrary are falsehoods aimed at audiences either unfamiliar with the reports or lacking competence on the matter. Nebenzia described the attack on Iran as 'yet another attempt to legitimize the use of force outside the framework of the UN Charter.'IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi told Sky News last week that there was no evidence of 'any systematic effort' by Iran to manufacture nuclear weapons. He added, however, that the agency had 'elements of concern' about Iran's enrichment of uranium to 60%. During a press conference in New York on Tuesday, Israeli envoy Danny Danon reiterated his government's position that Israeli strikes, which began on June 13, were aimed at preventing Iran from acquiring nuclear weapons. Iran, which denies having a military nuclear program, has condemned the attack as an act of aggression and announced plans to restrict its cooperation with the IAEA. The US-brokered ceasefire between Iran and Israel took effect on Tuesday and has so far been upheld.

US tells UN: strikes degraded Iran's capacity to build nuclear weapon

REUTERS/Brendan McDermid UNITED NATIONS - U.S. strikes on Iran's nuclear facilities "effectively fulfilled our narrow objective: to degrade Iran's capacity to produce a nuclear weapon," acting U.S. envoy to the U.N. Dorothy Shea told the United Nations Security Council on Tuesday. "These strikes – in accordance with the inherent right to collective self-defense, consistent with the U.N. Charter – aimed to mitigate the threat posed by Iran to Israel, the region and to, more broadly, international peace and security," Shea told the 15-member council. U.S. President Donald Trump has said the strikes over the weekend "completely and totally obliterated" Iran's key nuclear enrichment facilities. Earlier on Tuesday he announced that a ceasefire between Iran and Israel had started. "I think it's still early to assess all the strikes. We know we were able to push back the (nuclear) program. We were able to remove the imminent threat that we had," Israel's U.N. Ambassador Danny Danon told reporters on Tuesday. The U.N. Security Council met on Tuesday to discuss implementation of a resolution adopted in 2015 to enshrine Iran's nuclear deal with world powers, which lifted sanctions on Tehran in exchange for restrictions on its nuclear program. Trump quit the deal in 2018, during his first term, and restored all U.S. sanctions on Tehran. In response, Iran began moving away from its nuclear-related commitments under the accord. U.N. political affairs chief Rosemary DiCarlo told the Security Council on Tuesday that the objectives of the Iran nuclear deal and the U.N. resolution "have yet to be fully realized," adding: "This is regrettable." US defends Iran strikes at UN Council as Russia and China condemn action

NEW YORK — The United States and Israel on Sunday at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) strongly defended their military action targeting Iran's nuclear sites, saying the regime in Tehran cannot be allowed to have a nuclear weapon. Their remarks came at the UN emergency meeting called by Iran in the wake of US-led strikes on three key Iranian nuclear sites on Sunday, prompting reactions from several UN member states. "The time finally came for the United States in the defence of its ally and in the defence of our own citizens and interests, to act decisively", Dorothy Shea, the US representative to the UN Security Council. "The Iranian regime cannot have a nuclear weapon", she stressed. Israel's envoy, in his remarks, praised the US for the targeted strikes on the Iranian facilities in Fordo, Natanz and Isfahan, warning that a nuclear-armed Iran spelt danger to the world. "Make no mistake, the cost of inaction would have been catastrophic. A nuclear Iran would have been a death sentence, just as much for you as it would have been for us," Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations Danny Danon said. The US military struck three sites in Iran early Sunday, entering into Israel's effort to destroy Iran's nuclear program in a gambit to weaken a longtime adversary said to be working towards a nuclear decision to directly involve the US comes after more than a week of strikes by Israel on Iran that have moved to systematically eradicate the country's air defences and offensive missile capabilities, while damaging its nuclear enrichment vowed retaliation for the US strikes on its nuclear facilities."The timing, nature and scale of Iran's proportionate response will be decided by its armed forces", Amir Saeid Iravani, the permanent representative of Iran to the United Nations, told the UNSC, accusing Israel and the US of destroying key allies, Russia and China, strongly condemned the US military action. They proposed that the 15-member body adopt a resolution calling for an immediate and unconditional ceasefire in the Middle members are expected to respond by Monday night. However, a resolution must have at least nine votes and not be vetoed by the US, the UK, France, Russia or China to the session, UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres called for a peaceful solution and diplomacy, saying, 'We cannot – and must not – give up on peace.'He urged immediate and decisive action to halt the fighting and return to 'serious, sustained negotiations' on Iran's nuclear program. He called for talks to find a verifiable solution with full access by UN nuclear inspectors and a restoration of urging a return to diplomacy and a peaceful solution, Guterres stressed on Sunday that one path leads to wider war, while the other leads to de-escalation and dialogue. 'We know which path is right,' he said. — Euronews
