‘Predator 2' Walked So the New Films Could Run
Predator 2 is a very weird movie. As a concept, you totally understand why it exists. It's a 1990 sequel to the 1987 hit starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, taking the titular character into a completely new location and pitting him against a new high-profile, macho movie star. Schwarzenegger was in the jungles of Central America, and Danny Glover is in the concrete jungles of Los Angeles, California, which is in the middle of a deadly gang war. Or, at least, that's how it starts. By the end, Predator 2 is something else entirely, and it truly changed the franchise. Predator has been on our minds recently thanks to the trailer for the upcoming Predator: Badlands and the release of Hulu's animated feature Predator: Killers of Killers. Both are directed by Dan Trachtenberg and, speaking to io9 last month, Trachtenberg told us one of the key components to making a great Predator movie is that specific twist. 'It's one movie that turns into another,' Trachtenberg said. 'Predator starts out as… Rambo. I'm seeing an action movie in the jungle with [Arnold Schwarzenegger] fighting bad terrorists or whatever and then an alien creature shows up. So you're in a movie, and then an alien creature shows up, and that's very much a part of Killer of Killers and of course, Prey and in Badlands in a way that no one's expecting.' The first film does that, of course, and the second one does too, to a point. The Predator is introduced almost immediately in Predator 2, and his presence is much more integral to the plot than in the original. Eventually, though, a slightly disjointed story about gang wars, drugs, and media focuses up as we watch Glover's character, Lieutenant Michael R. Harrigan, showdown with the Predator. The battle goes from a warehouse to an apartment building, through bathrooms, elevator shafts, and, eventually, into the Predator's spaceship. Here's where Predator 2 gets really interesting. In the ship, Harrigan—and the audience—get our first taste of Predator culture. The big thing is that there are skulls from all sorts of aliens on the ship, trophies of hunts past. They key Harrigan into what he's dealing with. He then, of course, defeats the creature only to be confronted by several other Predators who happen to be on Earth too. Were they there for a reason? Are they helping out? We never find out, but their inclusion in the film, on this ship, with all these skulls, speaks to a bigger world in a way the original film never comes close. Harrigan expects to be killed, but as the victor of a fair fight, the other Predators respect him and leave him alone. One even gifts him a gun. An old gun with the name 'Raphael Adolini' on it from the year 1715. This, again, is a perfect tease at a much larger and older civilization than we can even fathom. One that would be explored at greater length in comics and future movies. Predator 2 cost more and made less than the original film, so it took 20 years for the franchise to return to the big screen. That was called Predators and it was less a direct follow-up to this story than a soft reboot. But those final scenes in Predator 2 echoed on. Killer of Killers and Prey both have more than a little DNA pulled from those scenes. And, we assume since they're all from the same filmmaker, that that'll be the same in Badlands too. So while Predator 2 is a solid, albeit troubled sequel, watching it now, you really admire it for how bold and open-ended it went with its world-building. It put the future of the franchise on a silver platter for someone to pick up and devour. And while it took a while, with the release of Killer of Killers, the franchise has finally started to do that. Prey and Predator: Killer of Killers are now on Hulu. Predator: Badlands is coming in November.

Mel Gibson, 69, chows down on pasta in Rome amid work on sequel to one of his iconic films
Mel Gibson was glimpsed having a laugh while chowing down on pasta in Rome - as he develops the sequel to one of his most iconic movies. The 69-year-old actor and director has apparently traveled to the capital of Italy in order to work on his upcoming film Resurrection Of The Christ. His picture will serve as the follow-up to his self-funded 2004 sleeper hit The Passion Of The Christ, directed by Gibson and starring Jim Caviezel as Jesus. The first movie began with Jesus in the Garden of Gethsemane and ended with him emerging from the tomb, so the next one will presumably cover the 40 days the Bible says he remained on earth after his return from the dead. A source said Gibson is pre-production on the new film, via TMZ, and he was spotted indulging in the local cuisine in a restaurant on his downtime. When he noticed that he was being observed, he mischievously goofed off a bit, pulling extravagant faces and grinning broadly. The Braveheart star cut a casual figure during his latest outing, opting for a black V-neck t-shirt and a matching set of trousers. Jazzing up the ensemble with a necklace, the Apocalypto director slung a fashionable set of gleaming sunglasses from his shirt. The sighting comes just weeks after Gibson enjoyed an onstage reunion with Danny Glover, his co-star in another one of his legendary pictures, Lethal Weapon. The co-stars were onstage at a fan expo in Philadelphia, during which they fielded questions about the hugely successful Lethal Weapon franchise and its previously announced and long delayed fifth instalment, which will be directed by Gibson. Glover, 78 - whose Detective Roger Murtaugh famously claimed he was 'too old for this s**t' in all four Lethal Weapon instalments - was back in the spotlight some three years after his last screen appearance in 2022 black comedy American Dreamer. Joining the veteran star, Gibson, 69 - Murtagh's unpredictable and highly volatile partner Martin Riggs - showed off an enormous, greying beard as he took to his seat at the Pennsylvania Convention Center during Saturday's expo. Gibson previously confirmed that long-time co-star Danny will make an appearance in the latest film, reprising his role as LAPD Sergeant Murtaugh. The Australian star also told how he asked for Glover's blessing to direct the movie following the death of director Richard Donner - who took charge of the first four films. A source said Gibson is pre-production on the new film, via TMZ The Braveheart star cut a casual figure during his latest outing The co-stars were onstage at a fan expo in Philadelphia, during which they fielded questions about the hugely successful Lethal Weapon franchise Reiterating his intention to direct the feature in 2022, Gibson told Entertainment Tonight: 'Yeah, I am directing that. I'm really looking forward to it.' The star went on to add that his place behind the camera was bittersweet following the death of Donner in 2021. He added: 'I wish I wasn't directing it. I wish Richard Donner was still here to do it but left us untimely, and he actually asked me, he said "Hey kid, if I don't make it, you'll take the reins, huh?" I told him to shut up. 'I think it's an honor for me to be able to carry the flag for him'. And after getting Richard's blessing, Gibson told how he then turned to Glover to ask his thoughts on him directing, also confirming that his former co-star had agreed to reprise his iconic role. Gibson added: 'I called Danny [Glover] up, of course, and said "Hey, dude, is it okay with you if I direct this?", to which Glover replied "Yeah, let's go". He also insisted on having complete faith in Glover, adding: 'I know Danny's going to pull it off real well, too. He's kind of like the show pony in this one'. Gibson made the big announcement about the new film in 2021, where he began his address by paying tribute to the filmmaker who had previously spearheaded the action-comedy franchise. Gibson featured in the Lethal Weapon movies as the unpredictable and highly volatile partner of the Donald Glover character Gibson also recalled that the filmmaker had given him his blessing to continue the series in the future 'The man who directed all the Lethal films, Richard Donner, he was a big guy,' he expressed. Gibson also recalled that the filmmaker had given him his blessing to continue the series in the future. He remarked that Donner 'was developing the screenplay and he got pretty far along with it. And he said to me one day, "Listen kid, if I kick the bucket you will do it." And I said: "Shut up."' Gibson then noted that the filmmaker made a point of telling various individuals that the actor was more than capable of keeping the franchise going after his death. 'But he did indeed pass away. But he did ask me to do it and at the time I didn't say anything. He said it to his wife and to the studio and the producer. So I will be directing the fifth one.' It's understood that plans to shoot the new film are now underway after years of delays, with original screenwriter Shane Black also onboard. The film franchise also spawned a TV series, which ran for three seasons for 2021 with Clayne Crawford as Riggs and Damon Wayans as Murtaugh.

Lucca Ravioli, beloved former Mission District deli, to be transformed into tech hub
SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) — The site of a long-vacant, beloved former San Francisco deli is being transformed into a tech hub — at least temporarily. The deli, Lucca Ravioli in SF's Mission District, had its final day of service in 2019, after 94 years in business. The deli was a long-running favorite with locals and actor Danny Glover was among those who visited it on its final day. Now the site at 1100 Valencia Street is being transformed into 'The Corner Store,' a tech and commerce hub that will be operated by Square. Founded by Jack Dorsey, Square is one of several online payments platforms operated by parent company Block. Square plans to temporarily set up shop at the former deli for a month of 'events rooted in community, growth, and celebration,' according to the Corner Store web page. The events kick off Tuesday with a launch party. Meta reportedly targets 'low performers' again, stoking fears of layoffs The activation's other events include a neighborhood restaurant night, a local business night, a Sysco and Square night, and 'Local Legacies,' a night showcasing the stories of local small businesses. During daytime hours, The Corner Store will operate as a business resource center where local business owners can consult with Square employees and purchase devices like the new 'Square Handheld.' The initiative, according to Square, 'will provide hands-on support and educational resources to area merchants and create a point of connection where home-grown businesses can network and collaborate.' 'As a corner store owner myself, I know how important these establishments are to creating connection and fostering community,' said Ramzi Budayr, owner of Dolores Deluxe and host of the 'Forever Neighbor' podcast. 'I'm looking forward to the programming, events, and meeting more local businesses at the Corner Store, so we can continue to support each other and support the neighborhood we all live and work in.' The Square pop-up is temporary and will run through June. Currently, no long-term plans have been announced for the former Lucca Ravioli location. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc.
