ESPN names this 4th-year WR as the Eagles' 'biggest surprise' of the 2025 offseason

ESPN named the biggest off-season surprise for all 32 NFL teams, and fourth-year wide receiver Danny Gray was the Eagles' most impressive performer. The Eagles have moved past Super Bowl 59 and are locked in on having a singular focus on the 2025 NFL regular season. Howie Roseman orchestrated another roster makeover in free agency, the 10-player NFL Draft, and several talented undrafted free agents. The Organized Team Activities and now the Mandatory Minicamp have concluded, and Philadelphia is wrapping up a five-week break before returning to the NovaCare Complex. Training Camp begins in late July – July 22 is report day, with a July 23 practice to follow – and Danny Gray is one of the most prominent under-the-radar players to watch. ESPN recently revealed the biggest off-season surprise for all 32 teams, and Gray was the player who gained the most ground in the wide receiver competition. The 26-year-old wideout made an impression during the OTA and minicamp practices open to reporters, using his 4.33 speed to stretch the field and accelerate past defenders on catches over the middle. Gray was a third-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2022. He dealt with some injuries and tallied just one reception during his time in San Francisco. He was waived by the Niners in August and signed with the Eagles' practice squad days later. Philadelphia has one of the top receiving duos in the league in A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith, but there are some roster spots up for grabs lower on the depth chart. Gray will be competing with players like Ainias Smith, Avery Williams and Terrace Marshall during training camp. -- Tim McManus Gray was a topic of discussion around the NovaCare Complex, and the player we featured in a recent article continues to turn heads at Eagles practice. Gray signed with the Eagles' practice squad in mid-September after failing to make the 49ers' 53-man roster at the end of training camp. He wasn't elevated for a single game during the 2024 campaign. Gray has an advantage over Terrace Marshall due to his familiarity with the system. At the same time, Johnny Wilson offers size that the Eagles covet, putting the final roster between Gray, Ainias Smith, and Avery Williams.

Eagles Receiver Ranks As 'Biggest Surprise' As Training Camp Looms

Eagles Receiver Ranks As 'Biggest Surprise' As Training Camp Looms originally appeared on Athlon Sports. A.J. Brown and DeVonta Smith are the Philadelphia Eagles' two best receivers. ... and they make up maybe the NFL's best combo. Advertisement Once all the numbers shake out? They will receive most of the passing targets throughout the 2025 season because of that status ... and there is everything right about that. QB Jalen Hurts, as key as the ground game is to the Super Bowl champs, also has reason to look for ways to get both players the ball, as the Eagles have done over the last three seasons. But that doesn't mean there aren't other receivers on the roster who merit attention. Jahan Dotson or Johnny Wilson might get a few opportunities to get the ball. Or ... What about another receiver who is getting nice billing after offseason workouts? Advertisement ESPN's Tim McManus called receiver pickup Danny Gray the Eagles' "biggest surprise" of the offseason. "The 26-year-old wideout made an impression during the OTA and minicamp practices open to reporters, using his 4.33 speed to stretch the field and accelerate past defenders on catches over the middle," McManus said. "Gray was a third-round pick of the San Francisco 49ers in 2022. He dealt with some injuries and tallied just one reception during his time in San Francisco." Our view: Gray has his work cut out, whether he impresses the Eagles or not. He saw limited action for the 49ers in 2022 and hasn't appeared in an NFL game since. So there is no track record ... yet. He is also competing in a receiver room that needs a WR3 to emerge ... but is pretty jammed up with candidates. Advertisement But ... So long as Gray continues to impress in a backup role, he may earn a spot on special teams or in the final receiver spot on the 53-man depth chart. ... while taking his offseason surprise into a regular-season roster berth. Former 49ers castoff has transformed himself into an Eagles training camp sleeper

Former 49ers castoff has transformed himself into an Eagles training camp sleeper Danny Gray is a talented pass catcher, and the former 49ers draft pick could be an under-the-radar player to watch during Eagles OTAs Say what you will about NBA summer leagues, MLB spring training, and anything else that gets the blood flowing. Seldom does anything compare to the expectancy experienced during a Philadelphia Eagles summertime camp. Veterans who have been sitting out the voluntary portions return to work. New faces in new places bring new optimism. Philadelphia enters mandatory minicamp with a dozen wide receivers on the 90-man offseason roster. We're counting Avery Williams in that number. He has also been called a returner and a running back, but you get the idea. Williams will enjoy both cooperation and competition with the likes of A.J. Brown, DeVonta Smith, and Jahan Dotson, but don't rule out a former San Francisco 49ers prospect. He's been turning heads, and there are theories that his stellar play might continue through the summer. Keep an eye on Danny Gray at Eagles minicamp Every year, there are those handful of guys. Undrafted rookies and former castoffs... Newly-acquired Birds who are hoping for a fresh start in a new city. They face challenging climbs, trying to impress the right people and secure a spot on the 53-man roster. Of the aforementioned dozen Eagles wide receivers, six will probably find their way onto the active roster. The rest are auditioning for opportunities on the practice squad or, if they're lucky, a chance to play elsewhere. Brown, Smith, and Dotson will make the Eagles' team. It's also wise to place wagers on Johnny Wilson, Ainias Smith, and Avery Williams. So, in keeping with the theory of six wideouts, if the math is correct, we've seemingly named them, so where does that leave someone like Terrace Marshall? How about someone with a longer shot of earning his place on the depth chart? Feast your eyes on Danny Gray. He returns for another chance at glory after winning a Super Bowl as part of Philadelphia's scout team last season. He'd rather be on the field, though, and he's doing all he can to achieve that. He's done what guys in his position are asked: Make the most of every opportunity. As a result, he enters mandatory minicamp with some buzz. As OTAs wore on, it became apparent that A.J. and DeVonta wouldn't be attending. Gray's opportunities increased. He made the most of them by impressing coaches and fellow teammates, which is precisely what he should do. Gray doesn't have much of a regular-season sample size to grade him on. He was a third-round choice of the San Francisco 49ers during the 2022 NFL Draft. He appeared in 13 games as a rookie, played 87 offensive snaps, and caught one pass for ten yards. It bears repeating. Gray's chances of making this Eagles roster are slim, razor thin, almost, but don't tell him that. He has come to compete. With good coaching and a little luck, good things may happen. Might there be a little Zack Baun in him? Time will tell. Keep an eye on him. There's a possibility we're in for a preseason show.

Philadelphia Eagles practice squad member's Old City home burglarized, sources say

Thieves stole thousands of dollars of jewelry and cash from the home of a Philadelphia Eagles practice squad member over Super Bowl weekend, police sources said. The burglary happened at wide receiver Danny Gray's Old City home, according to police sources. Gray, 25, played at Southern Methodist University in college. He was a third-round pick in the 2022 NFL draft by the San Francisco 49ers. After he was waived by the Niners, Gray signed with the Eagles practice squad at the beginning of the 2024 season. The incident happened as a string of burglaries have targeted the homes of professional athletes across the country. Some of the athletes targeted include Kansas City Chiefs stars Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, Cincinnati Bengals quarterback Joe Burrow and more. According to sources, the robbery at Gray's home appears to have no connection to the other cases involving athletes. The case is being investigated by local authorities, while the other cases targeting athletes are under investigation by the FBI. The Eagles crushed the Kansas City Chiefs, 40-22, on Sunday at the Caesars Superdome in New Orleans to win the second Super Bowl title in franchise history. Quarterback Jalen Hurts was named Super Bowl LIX MVP after a near-flawless performance where he recorded three total touchdowns. The Eagles' defense, run by veteran defensive coordinator Vic Fangio, gave Mahomes, Kelce and the rest of Kansas City's offense problems all night.
