Australian Women Win Right to Sue Qatar Air Over Body Searches

(Bloomberg) -- A group of Australian women won the right to sue Qatar Airways Group QCSC after being subjected to invasive bodily examinations without consent at Doha airport in 2020. The events of Oct. 2, 2020, followed the discovery of a newborn baby in a bathroom in the airport terminal, and female passengers on a Qatar Airways flight preparing to leave for Sydney were ordered off the plane. The examinations of the women took place as authorities tried to identify the mother of the abandoned infant. In a ruling published Thursday, the Federal Court of Australia found the women's claims against the airline strong enough to proceed to trial, overriding an earlier judgment that sided with Qatar Airways. The finding is a setback for Qatar Airways in Australia, where the company owns 25% of local airline Virgin Australia Holdings Ltd. and is seeking more long-haul traffic to the Middle East. At one stage, the incident was cited by Australia's government as one of the factors in blocking a request by Qatar Airways for more flights to Australia. While the next legal steps are unclear, future proceedings could also test to what degree international aviation law holds airlines responsible for the way passengers are treated. According to Thursday's ruling, the five women taking legal action were directed to an ambulance on the tarmac at Doha. Four of them were examined without permission, and three of the women were searched invasively. They then returned to the aircraft, which departed for Sydney. Qatar Airways didn't immediately respond to a request for comment. --With assistance from Danny Lee. More stories like this are available on

Two teenage boys aged 16 and 17 die after car ploughs into tree

Two teenage boys aged 16 and 17 have died after a car left the road and smashed into a tree. A passer-by came across the wrecked grey Hyundai i20 with the two boys' bodies inside shortly after 2.45am on Sunday in Corhampton, Hampshire. Despite the best efforts of emergency services, the two teens were pronounced dead at the scene. Their families have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers, the Hampshire Constabulary said. Floral tributes have been been left at the scene while Winchester City Councillor Danny Lee paid tribute saying his 'thoughts are with the families at the moment'. Speaking to the Daily Echo, Mr Lee said: 'My heartfelt feelings go to the family and community and obviously all friends who know the family. 'This is a tragic situation with youngsters cut down in their prime, it's beggars belief really. 'Our roads, our back lanes are not the safest roads in the world. People need to take care and I have no idea what happened here, but all I can say is my thoughts are in the family at the moment.' A pathologist is to carry out post mortem examinations on their bodies and the Mid-Hampshire coroner will open and adjourn an inquest into their deaths later in the week. A spokesman for Hampshire Constabulary said: 'Officers are appealing for witnesses and dash-cam footage following a fatal collision in Corhampton. 'Police were called at 2:47am to reports that a car had collided with a tree on Corhampton Lane. The collision involved a grey Hyundai I20. 'Sadly, despite best efforts of emergency services, a 16-year-old boy and a 17-year-old boy died at the scene. Their families have been informed and are being supported by specialist officers. 'As part of our investigation we would like to speak to anyone who witnessed the collision or anyone who has relevant dash cam footage capturing the incident or the moments leading up to it. 'If you have any information, please contact us online or via 101.' Anyone who witnessed the incident or may have relevant dashcam footage should contact the force online or via 101, quoting reference 44250311184.

British Airways Halts Dubai, Qatar Flights After US Strikes Iran

British Airways paused flights to Dubai and Doha, increasing aviation disruptions in the Persian Gulf after the US struck three nuclear sites in Iran and Tehran vowed to retaliate. The London-based carrier canceled several flights to Dubai and diverted two planes bound for the emirate overnight, according to data from Flightradar24. One flight took off from Heathrow Airport Saturday night and was diverted to Zurich after it reached Saudi Arabia's airspace in the early hours of Sunday, according to the flight tracking site. Another Dubai-bound jet returned to Heathrow after going as far as Egypt. The carrier also canceled flights to Qatar's capital Doha on Sunday and halted routes to Bahrain through the end of the month due to operational constraints and airspace restrictions. Several American and European airlines paused flights to the United Arab Emirates and Qatar last week after Israel started bombarding Iran. British Airways said it has adjusted its flight schedule as a result of recent events to ensure the safety of customers and crew. The moves highlight growing worries in a slice of the Middle East that is typically considered safe and sheltered from regional dislocations. US President Donald Trump said American bombers struck Iran's three main nuclear sites on Sunday and threatened more attacks if Tehran doesn't capitulate, pulling the US directly into the country's conflict with Israel despite his longtime promises to avoid new wars. Iran has threatened to hit US bases in the Persian Gulf if Washington gets involved and close down the Strait of Hormuz, a vital oil trade waterway it borders with the UAE and Oman. Qatar hosts the largest US base in the region, while Bahrain is home to the US Navy's Fifth Fleet. Bahrain said on Sunday that it is activating remote work for 70% of all government ministries and departments in light of regional developments. With assistance from Danny Lee and Siddharth Philip.
