Walt Disney quietly makes major Disney+ content change

When Disney+ first launched, it was a golden age for people who loved Star Wars and Marvel content. Walt Disney knew that it had massively popular brands that would draw a subscriber base. During that first year or so, there was pretty much a new Marvel or Star Wars show every few months. "The Mandalorian" not only help Disney+, it reignited interest in Star Wars at a time when the brand had suffered some missteps. It was a return to storytelling that was both grand and deeply personal. Related: Iconic grocery chain makes huge move to help shoppers on a budget Most of the Marvel shows did not perform as well. That may happen because of superhero fatigue, or, perhaps, nobody actually needed to see She Hulk in a sort of comedy. Disney's massive content splurge to launch it streaming service with sort of a one time thing. If you give Star Wars fans a series as good as "Andor" once a year, and maybe one other pretty good show, that audience isn't going anywhere. The same could be said for Marvel, where one really good Daredevil revival has probably done more for member acquisition and retention than having a bunch of shows built around secondary characters Don't miss the move: Subscribe to TheStreet's free daily newsletter But, Walt Disney has taken away, it has also added. Disney+ subscribers, no longer get as many original series based on the companies's intellectual property. They are, however, getting other things to help round out the app and make it a better value proposition. Disney has experimented by airing some of it, digital content on ABC and other platforms. That's something you only want to do sparingly because if people knew they were going to be able to see the adventures of baby Yoda, Grogu if you must, simply by waiting, they might be willing to wait. But, airing selective shows on broadcast or cable, perhaps before a new season arrives, can also sign ups. It's a tricky path to navigate and Disney has also started using Disney+ as a hub for all the content it owns, The Mouse House has been leveraging Hulu and ESPN to build out the Disney+ service. Related: Lululemon makes surprising store move "The presence of Hulu embedded in Disney+ basically from a user experience perspective and the addition of sports content is definitely having an impact, definitely having a positive impact. Not only is engagement up, but churn is down and significantly. And as we look ahead, it's obviously our desire and in fact, we're optimistic about being able to execute against it to turn the streaming business into a true growth business," he shared during the company's first-quarter earnings call. Iger thinks Disney's vast holdings allow him to build something no other company offers. "So when you consider the Disney brands that are part of Disney+, the general entertainment that's part of Hulu and the volume, and then the live sports that will be part of the experience. In a way, there's nothing like it in the streaming world. It's unrivaled in terms of quality, in terms of volume and just in terms of variety. We're very excited about it," he added.. While Disney wants consumers to bundle Disney+ with Hulu, and ESPN+, the company clearly wants to make sure it protects its namesake streaming service. To do that, it has added a daily Disney+-specific edition of SportsCenter as well as some Hulu originals. Iger spelled out the plan to keep Disney+ strong and grow the business. That includes leveraging some Hulu and ESPN content on Disney+ for everyone, and integrating the platforms for people who buy the full bundle. "And as we see it, there are three ways to do it. One is, what we've just talked about, which is to continue to put Disney+ and Hulu together as a user experience. You'll see more of that in the months ahead. In addition, we plan when we launched ESPN direct-to-consumer to be really smart about bundling that. And for those that bundle, the experience will be fully integrated, that will be another big step," he shared. Iger was also clear that Disney+ needs to offer a better user experience. "We're also hard at work in improving our basically the tech side of that business. We've taken a lot of steps already, including paid - including paid sharing, which we're just kicking in with Hulu that's also starting to work. A lot more in terms of personalization and customization, a lot on the ad-tech side and much more coming," he added. "And of course, the third pillar of growth will be investment in content, particularly outside the United States where we know that we need to invest more in local content and we've already started that process. It takes time and we don't really end up booking those costs until the shows air, but we're already starting to develop more aggressively in very, very targeted markets outside the United States. Why Future Marvel TV Shows Will Be Less Connected To MCU Movies

Kevin Feige, the head of Marvel Studios, delved into the company's plans for movies and TV shows during a recent interaction with a select group of journalists. In recent years, the studio has encountered a variety of issues with its projects. Feige offered details on how they intend to tackle them during the above-mentioned conversation with the media. Kevin Feige explains new MCU shows will be more independent of Marvel movies Feige spoke to the media at the Burbank HQ of Marvel Studios and discussed the plans they have for the Marvel Cinematic Universe. When he ultimately focused on Marvel TV, he disclosed that they would have less connection with the MCU movies going forward. Feige also mentioned that the studio will produce around three movies and often only one live-action TV show every year. 'Making two or three movies a year, some years it will be one, some years it will be three…We'll be down to a single live-action show a year,' he stated. (via Deadline) The executive clarified that these TV shows will have little overlap with the movies, so that the audience wouldn't need to watch everything to enjoy a given MCU project and understand what is happening in it. Feige used shows such as Netflix's Daredevil and Jessica Jones and ABC's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. and Agent Carter as examples, noting how small their connection to the mainstream MCU was. 'I think allowing a TV show to be a TV show is what we're returning to,' Feige said. (via Variety) He also made it clear that the events of Thunderbolts*, where a considerable portion of the New York population was turned into shadowy figures, would not have any impact on Daredevil: Born Again Season 2, which will also be set in the Big Apple. Earlier in the conversation, Feige noted that the issues that Marvel Studios have encountered in recent years were due to an overabundance of MCU projects, and not because the audience was experiencing superhero fatigue. 'For the first time ever, quantity trumped quality,' Feige admitted, referring to the post-Endgame era of the MCU. Originally reported by Tamal Kundu on SuperHeroHype. Set Photo From THE PUNISHER Reveals When the Marvel Special Presentation Takes Place — GeekTyrant

A new set photo from Marvel Studios' upcoming Punisher Special Presentation might have just confirmed when the story unfolds in the MCU timeline. Jon Bernthal first brought Frank Castle to life in Daredevil season 2 on Netflix, a performance so strong it launched his own two-season Punisher series in the Defenders Saga. After a highly anticipated return in Daredevil: Born Again in 2025, Bernthal is back once more in his own MCU spinoff. The Special Presentation, set to hit Disney+ in 2026, is now filming with Reinaldo Marcus-Green directing and co-writing alongside Bernthal. The latest detail comes from @_DaredevilShots on X, which shared a first-look image from the set. The photo shows a poster for a concert happening on Sunday, July 18, a date that only aligns with the year 2027. This strongly suggests that Frank Castle's next chapter takes place in that year, placing the Punisher story shortly after the events of Daredevil: Born Again season 1. Most of Born Again' s first season is set in early 2027, shortly after the New Year. With Season 2 expected in March 2026 and Bernthal appearing there as well, it seems the Punisher's solo outing happens just months later, in a New York City still under Mayor Wilson Fisk's oppressive rule. The MCU timeline has been a frequent point of debate since the five-year jump in Avengers: Endgame set the universe ahead of real time. Now, with 2026 releases taking place in 2027, Marvel is gradually catching up. If this pace continues, the timeline may sync with the real world by the time Avengers: Secret Wars arrives in 2027 to close out the Multiverse Saga. The Punisher Special Presentation doesn't have an official release date yet, but it's expected to premiere on Disney+ after Daredevil: Born Again season 2. Are you ready for Bernthal's Punisher to take center stage in the MCU once again?

Wilson Bethel Teases 'A New Dex' for Bullseye in DAREDEVIL: BORN AGAIN Season 2 — GeekTyrant

Daredevil: Born Again is set to return to Disney+ next year with Season 2, and Wilson Bethel is set to return as Benjamin 'Dex' Poindexter, better known as Bullseye. After his debut in Daredevil Season 3, Bethel is back, and according to the actor, fans should brace themselves for a very different version of the lethal marksman. Bethel's comeback wasn't always in the cards. Originally, Born Again didn't include Bullseye, but the creative overhaul brought the villain back into the fold and judging by Bethel's excitement, that was the right call. Speaking with Collider, the actor reflected on what it meant to reprise this iconic role: 'As it happened, getting that call and getting the opportunity to return to that show and return to that character, who I just absolutely adore playing, and I think it's so much fun to play, it's just been one of the great surprising gifts of my entire career. We just finished shooting the second season. I get to do so much fun, insane stuff in this new season.' Bethel went on to tease even bigger plans for the future: 'I'm so excited for fans to see it. I hope that we have several, if not many more, years of wonderful story in store for Bullseye and for the whole Daredevil crew. It's such a great, lovely group of people on that show, in front of and behind the camera. I just feel honored to be part of it.' As for what fans can expect when the new season drops? Bethel hints that we're about to see a whole new layer of Dex. 'The Dex of Season 2 is a new Dex that we haven't really seen yet,' he teased. 'I'm very excited for people to see it, and I'm curious to see how they weigh in on it. There are some elements of him in this season, some sides of his personality, that we haven't seen yet, and I'm thrilled for people to get to see it.' While details remain under wraps, leaked set photos suggest Daredevil may end up forming an uneasy alliance with the man who murdered Foggy Nelson. Considering Bullseye is still on the run after his failed attempt to kill Wilson Fisk, this could make for one of the most intense story arcs yet. In other Daredevil: Born Again news, Vincent D'Onofrio recently confirmed he has wrapped filming as Kingpin, and with D23 around the corner, there's a good chance the first footage will debut there. Season 2 of Daredevil: Born Again will consist of eight episodes and is slated to premiere on Disney+ in March 2026.
