LOOK: DJ Chark makes Falcons training camp debut at Saturday's practice

The Atlanta Falcons added more offensive firepower over the weekend, officially signing wide receiver DJ Chark Jr. to their 90-man training camp roster on Saturday morning. Chark is expected to help fill in for Darnell Mooney, who will be out for a few weeks due to a shoulder injury. The 28-year-old is an experienced veteran with versatility to play outside or in the slot. In 2019, Chark recorded a career-high 1,008 receiving yards and eight touchdowns for the Jacksonville Jaguars, leading to his first and only Pro Bowl appearance. Over seven NFL seasons, Chark has recorded 216 catches, 3,100 receiving yards and 24 touchdowns with four different teams. The former second-round pick has racked up at least 500 receiving yards in four of his seven years in the league. Chark made his camp debut on Saturday and was spotted wearing the No. 16 uniform. Mooney was a key part of the Falcons offense last season, recording 992 receiving yards in 16 games. In the meantime, Drake London and Kyle Pitts have been picking up the slack. London made an impressive one-handed grab on Saturday, while Pitts dominated the team's opening practice. Falcons WR Darnell Mooney to miss time due to shoulder injury, per report

According to a report from NFL Network's Tom Pelissero, Atlanta Falcons wide receiver Darnell Mooney is set to miss a few weeks due to a shoulder injury. Mooney went down during the team's first training camp practice on Thursday and did not return. The former Bears wideout had a stellar 2024 season in Atlanta, recording 992 receiving yards as the team's No. 2 option to Drake London. We'll have to wait and see if Mooney is given an injury designation by head coach Raheem Morris before Saturday's practice. The team is also expected to sign veteran DJ Chark Jr., according to a report from NFL Network. Chark could take Mooney's place for as long as he's out. The 28-year-old last played for the Los Angeles Chargers in 2024. In 2019, Chark topped 1,000 receiving yards for the Jaguars, leading to his first and only Pro Bowl appearance. He should be an adequate replacement for the time being. This article originally appeared on Falcons Wire: Atlanta Falcons: Darnell Mooney to miss a few weeks, per report

Falcons to sign wide receiver DJ Chark, per report

The Atlanta Falcons are expected to sign veteran wide receiver DJ Chark Jr., according to a report from Mike Garafolo of the NFL Network. The former second-round pick spent last season with the Los Angeles Chargers, appearing in seven games and recording four catches for 31 receiving yards and one touchdown. The Falcons have yet to provide an update on wide receiver Darnell Mooney, who exited Thursday's practice after suffering an injury. This signing could be an indication that Mooney will miss time. Chark, 28, has recorded 216 catches for 3,100 receiving yards and 24 touchdowns since entering the league in 2018. The former LSU Tiger had a career season in 2019 when he topped 1,000 receiving yards and made the Pro Bowl as a member of the Jacksonville Jaguars. After spending his first four NFL seasons in Jacksonville, Chark spent one season with the Detroit Lions in 2022. In 2023, Chark signed with the Carolina Panthers, recording 525 receiving yards and five touchdowns in 15 games. If the Falcons are to be without Mooney for an extended period of time, Chark isn't a bad replacement. Atlanta also released veteran defensive back Kevin King and placed three players on the non-football injury list on Thursday. Check out the team's updated 90-man training camp roster following these recent transactions. Falcons lose starting WR Darnell Mooney for several weeks with shoulder injury and sign D.J. Chark

FLOWERY BRANCH, Ga. (AP) — Darnell Mooney's status for the start of the season is uncertain as the Atlanta Falcons' second-leading receiver in 2024 is expected to miss several weeks of training camp with a shoulder injury. Mooney suffered the injury in Thursday's first practice of training camp. The Falcons bolstered their depth chart at wide receiver by signing veteran D.J. Chark Jr., who joined the team for Saturday's practice. Chark worked out for the Falcons on Friday. 'That workout was already set up,' Falcons assistant general manager Kyle Smith said Saturday, referring to the visit from Chark being scheduled before Mooney's injury. Smith said Mooney's injury is 'part of the deal' and the front office is 'always ready to find solutions and add to the roster whenever we can.' Smith provided no details on the severity of Mooney's injury. Chark, 29, began the 2024 season on injured reserve with a hip injury and was limited to four catches for 31 yards with one touchdown in seven games with the Los Angeles Chargers. Chark, a second-round draft pick by Jacksonville in 2018, set career highs with 73 catches for 1,008 yards and eight touchdowns for the Jaguars in 2019. Following four seasons with Jacksonville, Chark played for Detroit in 2022 and Carolina in 2023. Mooney had 64 catches for 992 yards and five touchdowns in 2024. Drake London led the team with 100 receptions for 1,271 yards and nine touchdowns. London, Mooney and Ray-Ray McCloud III opened training camp as Atlanta's top wide receivers. KhaDarel Hodge returns as a top backup after starting two games last season. The injury will force Mooney to miss valuable practice time with second-year quarterback Michael Penix Jr., who is entering his first full season as the starter following a three-game audition to close the 2024 season. ___ AP NFL:
