Ludhiana police arrest three in connection with Jawahar Nagar firing to threaten hotelier before court testimony.
Ludhiana: A hotelier's courtroom duty meets a prisoner's deathly itinerary. In a chilling plot stretching from a city prison to Europe, police say a jailed murder accused conspired to intimidate a witness by orchestrating a targeted shooting at the victim's home — carried out by teenage assailants with imported weapons. Three people, including a 16-year-old boy, have been arrested by the special cell of the Ludhiana police commissionerate in connection with a July 14-15 shooting in Jawahar Nagar. The incident, as police claim, was an attempt to threaten hotelier Kanwaljit Kumar into not testifying in the July 22 court hearing for his brother's murder case. Police have linked the conspiracy to Darpan, an inmate of Ludhiana Central Jail, who is on trial for the 2023 murder of Kanwaljit's brother, Harjinder 'Jindi' Kumar. Investigators say Darpan coordinated the attack from inside prison using external aides — including one based in Europe — and assigned the shooting to a team of local youth. Conspiracy spanned continents Commissioner of police Swapan Sharma has said Darpan contacted his Europe-based associate Namit Sharma, who has seven FIRs (first-information reports) registered against him and is now on the run. Namit allegedly passed instructions to Aman Sharma, who arranged the team to carry out the shooting. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo The arrested individuals have been identified as Manya Sharma, Kushveer Singh Guri, and a juvenile, all residents of Jawahar Nagar. "Manya along with the juvenile and a fugitive named Akshay executed the shooting," Sharma said. "Manya fired a shot using an imported pistol while riding pillion on a scooter driven by the juvenile, with Akshay on board as well." The attack took place outside Kanwaljit Kumar's home. Just an hour earlier, the same shooters had allegedly fired at Pratham, manager of Kanwaljit's hotel near the city's bus stand. Pratham escaped unhurt. Weapons, cash, shelter supplied The broader support network includes Kushveer and Danish, who provided shelter and financial backing, police have said. Namit also arranged the weapons, including an imported pistol capable of burst fire, cops have added. Five pistols, nine magazines, and 30 live cartridges were recovered, along with the scooter used in the crime. Inspector Navdeep Singh, who heads the special cell, said the shooters had been promised ₹1 lakh for the task. Witness still on hit list Despite the attack, Kanwaljit continues to receive threats, including calls from a Haryana-based gangster warning him not to testify, claim police sources. Authorities have since provided him with protection. Jailed accused to face questioning Police plan to bring Darpan out on a production warrant to investigate how he managed to coordinate the plot from behind bars and establish the source of the weapons. Raids at eateries to curb diarrhoea
Bhubaneswar: Raids were conducted on Tuesday at several restaurants in Bhubaneswar, Jajpur and Cuttack to assess the standard of hygiene amid the diarrhoea outbreak in parts of the State, officials said. Diarrhoea was first detected in Jajpur on June 9. Over 200 patients are still under treatment in different healthcare facilities in the district. A team, led by Darpan's tehsildar Manas Tripathy, conducted raids at eateries, sweet shops and hotels in Barchana town in Jajpur. 'We are checking the hygiene and quality of food served in eateries. If stale food was found, we issued a warning to the owner. If they continue to serve unhygienic or stale food, we will seal their shop,' he said. The local administration in Bari, Dharmasala, Vyasanagar and Binjharpur blocks has already shut down hotels, eateries, fast-food stalls, meat shops and water packaging units for a temporary period. Municipal authorities in Cuttack and Bhubaneswar have also started conducting raids after diarrhoea cases were detected in some pockets of the twin cities. Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation teams conducted raids at eateries in Kalinga Vihar and Delta Square areas. They collected food samples for testing and also fined some restaurant owners for not maintaining the quality, an official said. The Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) sealed two hotels in Station Bazar after finding low-quality water and food served there, he said. Capital Hospital's Director, Rupabhanu Mishra, said a separate ward has been set up to treat diarrhoea patients. Meanhile, Odisha Housing and Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mahapatra said the State government is fully alert and taking all precautionary arrangements to avoid spread of diarrhoea during the Rath Yatra, which is scheduled to commence from June 27. While speaking to mediapersons, Mahapatra said the Urban Development department is fully alert in view of the rising cases of diarrhoea in the State. 'Particular attention is being given to the town areas where Rath Yatra celebrations will take place. The department is on high alert to avoid any outbreak during the festival. Intensive surveillance and monitoring are being carried out to ensure that the public remains safe, and the festival is conducted smoothly,' said Mahapatra.
