Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo helps advance marine research
Dauphin Island, Ala. (WKRG) — Anglers hitting the water for the Alabama Deep Sea Fishing Rodeo aren't just fishing for a big catch, they're actually helping perform a scientific study. University of South Alabama professor Dr. Sean Powers has been judging the rodeo for 20 years, and he says there's a reason this specific event is so crucial to sea life studies here in South Alabama. 'Scientists aren't good fishermen,' Dr. Powers said. 'Just because we study it doesn't mean we're good fishermen. But these are the best fishermen.' While Dr. Powers weighs the fish he sees, he's also taking some notes. 'The science footprint is just as big as the tournament,' he said. 'So, we have 100 young scientists out here that we're training and collecting data that's very, very useful for fisheries, management, and also training.' With the help of University of South Alabama students, scientists are able to track all sorts of sea life patterns. 'We can also take that ear bone and run chemical analysis on it and see where that fish came from,' Dr. Powers explained. 'Did that fish come from Louisiana? That fish come from Florida, and all those things we can do because these fishermen are letting us sample their fish.' It's a partnership Dr. Powers said he is extremely grateful for. 'It just the opportunity we wouldn't get normally without spending a tremendous amount of money,' he said. 'So we call this 'Fishmas' because all of them are bringing us presents every day.' Fourth of July house fire under investigation: Neighbors blame fireworks
DAUPHIN ISLAND, Ala. (WKRG) — A home on Dauphin Island was engulfed in flames on the night of 4th of July. While the cause remains under investigation, neighbors believe fireworks are to blame. 'I mean, it exploded like crazy,' said Truman Stamps, who was staying at a nearby home. 'There were just huge explosions going off fireworks like crazy. And then almost immediately, the bottom of the house started to light on fire.' The use and possession of fireworks is illegal on Dauphin Island, but Stamps says that didn't stop some residents from setting them off. 'Our neighbors started setting some stuff off. They lit a few, and one kinda went astray into their front yard. A small fire started,' he said. 'A couple of neighbors ran down with fire extinguishers and were able to put that one out.' Stamps says people continued to light off fireworks at the home after that. 'After that, things just kinda got a little bit out of hand,' he said. 'They lit off a few more fireworks, and I guess something tilted over and it looked like one shot underneath their house where they had a lot stored up.' The damage to the home appears extensive. 'I mean, probably a good thousand dollars or more worth of fireworks one came and hit that table full of those fireworks.' said Stamps. Everyone inside the home, including three dogs, was able to get out safely, according to Stamps. The fire remains under investigation. Authorities remind residents that fireworks on Dauphin Island are not just illegal but potentially dangerous. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. Dauphin Island marina hit hard by storm with boat damage and debris (photos)
DAUPHIN ISLAND, Ala. (WKRG) — A strong storm roared through Dauphin Island before dawn Saturday morning. It left flooding and several damaged sites in its wake. The most concentrated damage could be seen at the Dauphin Island Marina. At Capt'n Snapper's Marina Bar & Grill, the storm blasted through the rear wall of the bar and caved in the ceiling of the kitchen. LOCATION: Debris and insulation littered what was the hub of their meal preparation. The owner says they'll likely be closed until they can get the damage and insurance issues sorted out. A short distance away, boat owners say the storm pulled two boats from their metal elevated slips into the water. As of Saturday morning, one boat was still missing. A 2nd boat was tossed into the water and drifted into another slip on the other side of the marina. Its engine was heavily damaged. Elsewhere on Dauphin Island, the storm knocked over a tree, and it landed on top of a boat and a front porch. Another, larger tree fell in another yard, completely missing a nearby home. At the campground, the storm tossed tents and tables outside at least one RV. The severe weather also snapped a communications tower in two places at the Dauphin Island Public Works building. As far as we know, no one was hurt in the storms overnight. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten, or redistributed.
