Long Island swimmer ‘most likely' bitten by shark at popular beach: authorities
A 20-year-old woman was 'most likely' bit by a juvenile shark at a popular Long Island beach while trying to beat the blistering heat this week, park officials revealed on Friday. The swimmer was wading in waist deep water at the Central Mall beachfront at Jones Beach State Park on Wednesday when something chomped on her foot and leg just after 4 p.m., according to a release from Parks, Recreation and Historic preservation. The woman couldn't see what attacked her, but parks officials determined it was most likely a juvenile sand tiger shark, according to an investigation from the Department of Environmental Conservation. Advertisement The 20-year-old woman was waist-deep at the Central Mall beachfront when she was bitten by something that officials believe is a juvenile shark. Getty Images Lifeguards sprung into action and treated the woman who suffered minor, non-life-threatening lacerations to her lower extremity and was treated at Nassau County University Medical Center Hospital. Swimming was shut down at Central Mall following the presumptive shark bite, but resumed Thursday morning. Advertisement Park officials suggest the best way to avoid shark encounters is to keep out of the water at night, steer clear of murky water, stay away from appetizing schools of fish, and always follow instructions of lifeguards. The toothsome aquatic terrors have been spotted several times as folks make their seasonal return to Atlantic Coast beaches. Sharks have been sighted at several locations across the Atlantic Coast since the summer weather started to turn. Notre Dame commit Caden Crowell named Indiana Player of the Year
Notre Dame commit Caden Crowell, the No. 2 ranked player in Indiana's Class of 2025, was named Indiana Player of the Year following a spectacular 2025 season. The left-hander was magical on the mound, allowing just two earned runs over 55 innings while recording 97 strikeouts. He walked just 11 batters. Crowell recorded a perfect 6-0 mark with an obscene 0.53 WHIP. He did not allow a single extra-base-hit or any stolen bases the entire spring, holding opponents to a .098 batting average. Ridiculous numbers. The 6-foot-3, 205-pounder, who also plays first base, hit .375 with 14 extra-base hits, including three HRs, three triples and eight doubles. He also had four steals and drove in 24. Crowell, who is one of the top 50 prospects in the country, helped Valparaiso win its first-ever Class 4A state championship. The question now is whether Crowell will make it to South Bend and pitch for the Fighting Irish. It will all depend on how things shake out in the Major League Baseball Draft in July. Notre Dame's Jadarian Price and Malachi Fields visit local children
Notre Dame football players Jadarian Price and Malachi Fields surprised local children at a multi-sport camp at the Mishawaka Fieldhouse in Mishawaka, Indiana on players spent time with the kids playing various sports, including volleyball, basketball and soccer. Price, a running back, and Fields, a transfer wide receiver, helped the kids stay active inside as they stayed dry from the rain. They also helped hand out awards, took photos with the kids and took the time to sign the kids' camp shirts. "It's always nice to be able to come out here and support kids in the community," Price said. "We've been doing things like this for the past three, four years. . . it's a very exciting time." Notre Dame opens the 2025 college football season at Miami on Sunday, August 31 at 7:30 p.m. ET at Hard Rock Stadium (ABC). Notre Dame adds veteran lefty Noah Rooney from Minnesota
New Notre Dame outfielder/catcher Drew Berkland is getting a familiar teammate for next season. Former Minnesota left-handed pitcher Noah Rooney has committed to play for the Fighting Irish. It's a big piece for ND, as the graduate transfer led the Gophers in wins (4), ERA (2.94) and saves (4) this past season. Over 22 appearances and 49 innings pitched, he struck out 36. The 6-foot, 170-pounder has struck out 80 and has an ERA of 3.73 over 108.2 career IP. Rooney is a big pickup for an Irish bullpen that desperately needed a veteran left-handed arm. The Irish lost Justin Mayes and Tore Indomenico to the transfer portal earlier this summer; only Brady Koester remains from last year's team. Three freshmen lefties are expected to arrive in South Bend this summer: Gian Gamelli, Dylan Singleton and Caden Crowell. But Crowell could be en route to the majors depending on what happens in the MLB Draft in July.
