French giants Monaco sign Ireland underage star as Cork City confirm departure

French giants Monaco have made some high-profile signings so far this summer, with Paul Pogba, Ansu Fati and Eric Dier among those arriving at the Ligue 1 side. But one transfer that won't grab as many headlines in France is that of David Dunne from Cork City to Les Rouge et Blanc. His departure from Turner's Cross was confirmed on Wednesday by the League of Ireland outfit. Dunne (16) made headlines with Cork last season when he made his first-team debut at the age of 15, while he appeared three times for the club on their return to the Premier Division this year. He has signed a trainee contract with Monaco, in a move that will see the Leesiders receive compensation. It read: 'Cork City FC can confirm that David Dunne has signed for French side, AS Monaco. 'The 16 year old attacker joined City's academy from Rockmount in 2023, and went on to make his first team debut away to Derry City in April. 'The club can confirm that we did offer the player a professional contract, however he has decided to join AS Monaco. 'AS Monaco notified the club of their intention to sign the player and pay the club the required compensation as per the FIFA Regulations on the Status and Transfer of Players (RSTP).' It went on to quote the club's Head of Academy and former winger Liam Kearney, who said: 'David is a very exciting young player with a bright future ahead of him, which is underlined by the fact that he has already got first team minutes at such a young age. 'Of course, we would love to have kept him at the club, but he has decided to make the move to Monaco and we wish him every success.'

Monaco confirm signing of Cork City teenager David Dunne

Monaco confirmed the signing of David Dunne from Cork City on Wednesday. The 16-year-old joins the French club on a trainee contract. Dunne made his Cork City debut as a 15-year-old last season. The talented forward had made three appearances for Cork this season. 🔴 OFFICIEL ! Oumar Konaté 🇨🇮, attaquant ivoirien de 18 ans, s'engage à l'AS Monaco ! — Lig'ASM 🇲🇨 (@LigASM_) July 9, 2025 "He's not under contract with us so it's just a compensation package between the clubs so I actually have no idea," former Cork City manager Tim Clancy explained in April when asked regarding the speculation about the teenager leaving the club. "It's David's decision and his family's decision, and his representative. We can't turn down offers for players that aren't under contract. I think David was offered a good contract with us but because of the Brexit situation he can leave. "Monaco can offer him a contract the exact same day we can and the last time I looked out my window in Cork it's not as nice as Monaco!" Dunne was named men's U15 LOI Academy Player of the Season for 2024.

Investigation into death of man who drowned after approach by fishing officers

INLAND FISHERIES IRELAND – the state regulator for fishing in Irish rivers, lakes and streams – is liaising with gardaí as part of investigations into an incident in the south-east where a man approached by its officers later got into difficulty and drowned. Officers from Inland Fisheries Ireland (IFI) came upon the man at the River Suir, near Tinhalla on the boundary of Waterford and Tipperary, after 8pm on Tuesday evening. It's understood the man attempted to swim across the river. He died in the attempt after getting into difficulty and was pronounced dead at the scene. Named locally as Danny Kavanagh, he was aged in his 30s and was from Co Waterford outside Carrick-on-Suir. More recently he had been living near the village of Clonea Power. Advertisement A spokesperson for the fisheries body said it was limited in what it could say about Tuesday's 'tragic incident' as the issue was under investigation by An Garda Síochána. 'IFI is assisting An Garda Síochána with their investigation, and An Garda Síochána is examining all the circumstances surrounding the incident,' the spokesperson said. 'Our thoughts remain with everyone affected by this tragedy. As the matter is under investigation by An Garda Síochána it would be inappropriate for IFI to comment further.' In relation to this week's incident, a Garda spokesperson said gardaí were 'alerted to an incident where a male encountered difficulty in the water' and that emergency services later helped to retrieve the man's body from the river. David Dunne, a local Sinn Féin councillor and Cathaoirleach of the Carrick-on-Suir electoral district, said the community was 'devastated' by the death of Danny Kavanagh. 'He was a young man with young children and we can only offer our condolences to the family on this tragic event,' Dunne said. Readers like you are keeping these stories free for everyone...
