Little Help In View For Unbalanced Cleveland Guardians' Roster
Cleveland Guardians' Chase DeLauter celebrates his three-run home run against the Chicago White Sox ... More during the first inning of a spring training baseball game Monday, March 18, 2024, in Phoenix. (AP Photo/Ross D. Franklin) People often ask if there is help on the way for the dismal Cleveland Guardians offense? Talk shows, media articles, and on-line chats are loaded with baseball fans in general, and Guardians fans in particular, wondering if help is on the way to save the Guardians season? This old scout has thought long and hard about that issue. One has to look at the root of many of the hitting issues. To begin, the Cleveland Guardians entire organization is heavily skewed to left-handed hitters. In fact, only two position players in the Top 30 Cleveland Guardians prospects are pure right-handed hitters. Only two of 17 ranked position players hit from the right batter's box. Prospect No. 24, Alfonsin Rosario is a right-handed hitter. So is Luis Merejo, who is the No. 27 ranked player by Pipeline. Three of the 17 are switch-hitters, leaving 12 top position prospects hitting left-handed. To this old scout, the imbalance in roster construction is coming home to roost for the Guardians offense. On the major league roster, as of the start of play July 9, only designated hitter David Fry, backup catcher Austin Hedges, utility outfielder Will Wilson, and utility outfielder Johnathan Rodriguez hit right-handed. Note that with the exception of Fry, none of the right-handed hitters have won a full-time job in the Guardians starting lineup. Jhonknsey Noel has had at-bats at the big league level. He is a right-handed hitter, but he barely played when he was on the 26-man roster. Noel has taken the roster spot of left-handed hitting Kyle Manzardo when Manzardo left the club to attend to a family medical emergency July 17. GOODYEAR, ARIZONA - MARCH 12: C.J. Kayfus #2 of the Cleveland Guardians warms up during a spring ... More training game against the San Francisco Giants at Goodyear Ballpark on March 12, 2025 in Goodyear, Arizona. (Photo by) Top Prospects: Guardians fans have flooded sports talk shows to lobby for the promotions of top Cleveland hitting prospects, Chase DeLauter, and C.J. Kayfus. There is a problem with the Guardians promoting both those young, promising players. Both DeLauter, 23, and Kayfus, 25, hit left-handed. In order to promote either or both of those prospects, a player or players must be removed from the 26-man roster. Promoting either of those two players would require the demotion of a player with minor league options remaining. Sending out right-handed hitting shortstop, Gabriel Arias, who is currently on the injured list, isn't possible. He is out of options. He would be subject to a claim by any major league club. The position players with options remaining include; Left-handed hitting Steven Kwan, Left-handed hitting Daniel Schneemann, Left-handed hitting Bo Naylor, Left handed hitting Kyle Manzardo Switch-hitter Angel Martinez, Switch-hitting Brayan Rocchio, Right-handed hitting David Fry, Right -handed hitting Will Wilson Right-handed hitting Johnathan Rodriguez Kwan is an All Star. He isn't going anywhere, unless he chooses to leave as a free agent in 2028, or gets traded before then. Martinez is enjoying a modicum of success, and is a valuable switch-hitter, capable of playing multiple positions. Rocchio or Wilson may get sent back to Triple-A when Arias returns from injury. But that won't fix the lack of right-handed bats. Rodriguez may be a good choice to send out, but his departure would eliminate another right-handed bat from manager Stephen Vogt's bench. David Fry would be a logical choice to go to Columbus and try to find his hitting mechanics. A lengthy injury caused Fry to miss time, and he is far from the All Star he was last season. But removing Fry removes another right-handed bat, and replacing it with yet another left-handed hitter. His occasional home runs may be too compelling to ignore. Schneemann isn't a consistent hitter, but he has filled in nicely at several positions. Naylor isn't going anywhere. The team believes in him as their primary catcher. CLEVELAND, OHIO - JUNE 25: Kyle Manzardo #9 of the Cleveland Guardians celebrates after hitting a ... More single during the fifth inning against the Toronto Blue Jays at Progressive Field on June 25, 2025 in Cleveland, Ohio. (Photo by) That leaves Kyle Manzardo. And that's interesting. Manzardo, 25, is a left-handed hitting first baseman/designated hitter. He needs work on his defense at first base. He is fooled mightily at the plate by savvy pitchers. While Manzardo has power, he hasn't refined his hitting mechanics to the point of consistently offering solid plate appearances. It seems when he looks fastball, he gets spin. When he looks spin, he gets the fastball. And Manzardo can hit fastballs. Especially low fastballs. Manzardo, like many Guardians hitters, is fooled by changeups. But if the Guardians want to promote another left-handed hitter in either DeLauter or Kayfus, it might be wise to send Manzardo to Triple-A Columbus for more seasoning. Frankly, that's probably folly. Kayfus is a first baseman. I CHICAGO, ILLINOIS - JULY 01: Carlos Santana #41 of the Cleveland Guardians celebrates scoring ... More against the Chicago Cubs during the fourth inning at Wrigley Field on July 01, 2025 in Chicago, Illinois. (Photo by) f the Guardians trade Carlos Santana, 39, they can play Kayfus at first base, and keep Manzardo. As for promoting left-handed hitting DeLauter? That's the one that's troubling. Who gets sent out for DeLauter? If they jettison Rodriguez, the bench is without another right-handed bat. Frankly, Rodrigues isn't playing much anyway. For this old scout, the problem is too many left-handed hitters in the entire organization.

Guardians manager breaks silence after snapping losing skid
Cleveland Guardians fans, you may now exhale. Your winning drought has come to an end. After finding themselves with lesser runs in the past 10 games, the team finally collected their bearings and downed the Houston Astros 7-5 on Monday. Advertisement And needless to say, Guardians manager Stephen Vogt was nothing short of elated, praising the play from Brayan Rocchio, who delivered a two-run double which kickstarted the run production for the team in their long-awaited victory. "He had such an unbelievable game," Vogt said to the press after the game. "The two sac-bunts to put us in good positions and defensive plays and then the double, obviously we needed something like that. We put up four, and then they put one up, and we come right back and put up two more. That's who we are, and we just haven't been doing that as of late, so it felt really good and a big, big impact by Rocchio." But it was a solo home run in the top of the ninth inning by David Fry that was the cherry on top of the win at Daikin Park Monday, giving the team just enough insurance to back the Astros against the wall and close out the game. "I mean, obviously, David hasn't swung the bat the way he wants to," Vogt said on the slugger's offensive performance. "He'll continue to get at-bats, continue to play, and so, to see one go over the wall on a hit like that for an insurance run, that really gets your confidence going." Advertisement Though the 10-game skid has severely damaged their playoff chances, Vogt refuses to give up all hope, and even praised his team for their endurance. "We know it's not over over. Every team goes through a stretch, but 10 days is a long time. This group never wavered and never stopped working." Luckily for the team, the All-Star break is near, giving them plenty of time to regroup and still make a charge for the postseason.

Guardians snap 10-game skid in win at Astros
July 8 - Brayan Rocchio lined a go-ahead, two-run double into the left field corner with two outs in the top of the sixth inning, and a quartet of relievers protected the lead as the visiting Cleveland Guardians snapped a 10-game losing skid with a 7-5 victory over the red-hot Houston Astros on Monday. After producing sacrifice bunts in his first two plate appearances, Rocchio snapped a 4-all tie by drilling an 0-2 slider from Astros reliever Steven Okert over the outstretched glove of Houston third baseman Isaac Paredes. Angel Martinez and Bo Naylor, who greeted Okert with a four-pitch walk, scored and provided the Guardians a 6-4 advantage. The Astros, who rallied from a four-run deficit by scoring four runs on two homers in the bottom of the fifth, sliced the Guardians' two-run margin in half when Victor Caratini socked a solo homer to right field with two outs in the sixth off Guardians reliever Matt Festa (2-2). Festa limited the damage to a lone run. Right-handers Paul Sewald and Hunter Gaddis followed by working a perfect inning of relief each before Guardians closer Emmanuel Clase retired the Astros in order in the ninth for his 19th save. David Fry added an insurance homer in the top of the ninth. The Astros entered the series with the best home record in the American League (32-14) and with 10 wins in their last 11 games at Daikin Park. Their four-run rally in the fifth appeared to set the stage for more homefield magic before Cleveland snapped its longest skid in 13 years. The Guardians grabbed a 4-0 lead off Astros starter Colton Gordon (3-2) starting when Steven Kwan recorded an RBI single off a line drive that grazed Gordon in the head. Will Wilson scored on the play, and Gordon remained in the game despite the scare. Two batters later, Jose Ramirez scorched a 1-1 sweeper from Gordon on a line to left, his 15th homer plating Kwan and Naylor. Guardians right-hander Tanner Bibee cruised into the fifth having faced just one batter above the minimum. The wheels quickly came off, with Taylor Trammell following consecutive singles from Caratini and Cooper Hummel with a three-run shot to left, his first homer of the season. Three batters later, Paredes chased Bibee and knotted the score with his 19th homer. --Field Level Media
