Everything Flows: Music in North Lanarkshire is on display at Summerlee Museum in Coatbridge until October 19. The exhibition, which runs from June 28 to October 19, chronicles the vibrant music scene from the 1970s to the early 2000s, starting with Coatbridge legends, Fran and Anna. It also features David Keenan's novel This is Memorial Device, set between Airdrie and Coatbridge. New interviews with musicians Duglas T Stewart (BMX Bandits), Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub), Joe McAlinden (BMX Bandits, Superstar), and Monica Queen (Thrum) provide insight into the local music scene. Artwork from Turner Prize-shortlisted Jim Lambie, Pastel's musician and illustrator Annabel Wright, and a sketch by the iconic Alisdair Gray, who painted Bellshill band De Rosa's second album Prevention, are also on display. The exhibition offers something for everyone, from BMX Bandits fans to music fanzine enthusiasts. An accompanying programme of events will be continually updated on the museum's website at

Permission given for new office block on Dublin City Arts Centre site
Dublin City Council has granted planning permission to Ventaway for a 14 storey office block scheme for a site on the former City Arts Centre at City Quay in Dublin 2. The council has granted planning permission to the firm, headed up by developer, David Kennan and Winthrop engineering group founder, Barry English, despite opposition from the Office of Public Works (OPW), an inner city primary school, a religious trust and An Taisce. In granting planning permission to Ventaway Ltd, a Council planner's report concluded that the scheme 'will result in the redevelopment of a massively underutilised vacant site in a prominent location within the city centre'. The report found that the proposed alterations 'ensure that the development will not only create valuable commercial space but will also add much needed artistic spaces, while also providing managed space for the adjoining school'. READ MORE Underlining the scale of the scheme, the council has ordered Ventaway to pay €3.18 million in planning contributions towards public infrastructure and €1.08 million towards Luas works. The current plans follow An Bord Pleanala refusing planning permission in May 2024 to Ventaway to develop what would have been Dublin's tallest building at 24 storeys for the same site. Ventaway lodged its revised plans last December and the scheme - designed by architects, Henry J Lyons - is 61.05m tall, which is a 46.95m lower than the high scheme refused in 2024. Principal of City Quay National School, Philip Kelly, told the council that the school's board of management were objecting 'in the strongest possible terms' to the new planning application. The OPW is the State agency charged with the care and management of the James Gandon designed Custom House and in its objection, the OPW stated that the construction of a building at this scale and magnitude 'has the potential to adversely impact the historic and architectural character of the Custom House'. In a separate objection on behalf of St Laurence O'Toole Trust and The Administrator of the Parish of the Immaculate Heart of Mary, planning consultant, Declan Brassil stated that the scheme 'represents a significant overdevelopment of the site'. The country's largest industry lobby group, IBEC also weighed in, stating that approval should be granted. IBEC's Head of Infrastructure and Environmental Sustainability, Aidan Sweeney told the Council that the proposal 'offers an effective revitalisation of a prime location in the city centre and is exactly the sort of project Dublin requires going forward'.

David Keenan announces Dublin and London shows: 'This is the start of a new chapter'
He will play the Ambassador Theatre on July 12. David Keenan has announced a series of gigs for next July, including a show in London's Bush Hall on July 10 and Dublin's Ambassador Theatre on July 12. Announcing the dates on Instagram, the Dundalk-born artist teased that this is the start of a new chapter, and that there were more announcements to come this week. Most recently, Keenan was announced as the composer for upcoming crime drama Salvable, starring Shia LaBeouf and Toby Kebbell. News of his fourth album, the follow-up to 2022's Crude, is expected later this year. Earlier this year, the musician also premiered Focla ar Chanbhs, a documentary which follows him through the creative process across 500 days. My adventures in experimental music
David Keenan acquired his craft as a music writer, he says, from reading the crème de la crème of critics who milked rock music for all it was worth during the 1970s – Lester Bangs, Griel Marcus, Paul Morley, Biba Kopf – before deciding that rock criticism was not his bag. In the preface to this weighty collection of his music journalism, he says he considered himself more of a 'rock evangelist'. The pieces originally appeared between 1998, when Keenan was writing for hardcore music magazines such as Melody Maker, MOJO and the Wire, and 2015, after which he checked out of regular reviewing duties to pursue his career as a novelist. Luckily for him, his debut novel This Is Memorial Device proved a smash hit. He dedicates Volcanic Tongue to ur-rocker Lou Reed, but the point is pressed that stylistic labels barely compute to Keenan, and there are lengthy and insightful pieces about free jazz, folk and modern composition too. Concerned not so much with the technical nuts and bolts driving music forwards, or re-examining existing mythomanias, Keenan is instead motivated to capture 'the first rush of hearing' and the attitudes behind – even forming – the sounds. Rock, he says, tends towards collapsing into nostalgia. But tracing what he terms the rock and roll 'urge' elsewhere has taken him far beyond rock – towards other music unafraid to work itself out in the moment of playing. Keenan's interview with the free-improviser guitarist Derek Bailey, when it was published in the Wire in 2004, made me grasp the extent to which Bailey's inquisitive, nigglingly provocative music was an extension of his acerbic wit.
