North Wales: Tributes paid to respected solicitor
David Matthews, from Heswall, worked as a consultant for Wrexham-based firm Hopleys GMA for more than 13 years, representing defendants in courtrooms across Wrexham, Mold and the wider North Wales area. A spokesman for the firm said: "It is with huge regret we announce the sad passing of David Matthews, who passed away on June 8, 2025, after a short illness bravely borne. "David's passing was unexpected and a huge shock to all his friends colleagues and most importantly his family. "All our thoughts are with his wife Sandra and his children, Paul, Anna and Sarah. "David worked as a consultant with our practice for the past 13 years dealing primarily with criminal matters." Mr Matthews previously practiced in Liverpool City Centre with his own firm; 'David Matthews & Co.' However, for the past 20 or so years he focused primarily on Wrexham, Mold and North Wales. He appeared regularly at all the courts and police stations in Liverpool, North Wales and surrounding areas. "He approached his role with dedication but never lost his sense of humour. "The criminal justice system has lost a respected and talented individual. "We as a practice have lost a valued colleague and friend. "Away from law, David was an avid Manchester City supporter and keen golfer, although his work left little time for enough games. We will miss our discussions about sport. "Our thanks to fellow members of the profession and many clients who have contacted us to pass on their condolences." Mr Matthews' funeral will be held at St Peters Church, Village Road, Heswall, Wirral, on Friday, July 11 at 2pm.

Kerry Athletics host well attended and received ‘Track and Field Live' in Riocht
That was how two-time Olympian David Matthews describe the Track and Field Live meet at An Ríocht track last week when over 300 athletes turned out to say no to the bad weather and yes to athletics. An impressive 10 Kerry clubs, alongside 14 clubs from outside Kerry, took part in an extravaganza of runs, jumps and throws for juveniles, juniors and seniors over three hours. It was like the open sports of old with familiar and unfamiliar faces entering in a variety of events. Matthews oversaw the show and lent a commentary that was inspiring for athletes and spectators in a production of athletics that was sponsored by Kerry Athletics and Athletics Ireland, and by An Ríocht lending its track for the occasion. Aoife Dennehy (An Ríocht) had the honour of being the first to cross the line in the feast of athletics as she won the girls' U10 60m impressively. Then it was action all the way as juveniles competed and enjoyed a variety of sprints, middle distance, jumps and throws. The juniors and seniors took the inspiration from the juveniles, and impressive were Keelie O'Connor (Killarney Valley), Róisín Daly (Farranfore MV) and Megan Lynch in the senior women's events, while the men's senior events were enlightened by Koadichinma Ogbene (Titans, Dublin) and Said Salim (Leevale) who dominated the sprints. Kieran Keane (Ríocht) and Alan O'Connor (Tralee Harriers) were impressive in the shot competition, while Conor Kissane (Killarney Valley) was striking in his 3000m win. 'Track and Field Live will be back in Kerry next year,' David Matthews promised at the end of the hectic celebration of athletics.

The Shift: Bentonville event convenes $2B in capital
More than 400 people registered to attend the third VC Immersions event held in Bentonville Wednesday. The big picture: The series launched in February 2024 as a flagship of Startup NWA, an arm of the Northwest Arkansas Council. Organizers convene a curated group of entrepreneurs and venture capital firms to network and, ideally, strike a deal. About $10 million of investment in early-stage companies resulted from the first two events in February 2024 and October, Serafina Lalany, executive director of Startup NWA, told me. State of play: On Wednesday, 40 venture capital firms with more than $2 billion in assets under management held lightning round meetings with entrepreneurs, a sort of speed dating for VC, one attendee said. By the numbers: About 250 entrepreneurs from 32 states and four countries attended. Twenty-seven companies were from Arkansas. About 200 meetings were scheduled. What we're hearing: Retail and supply chain/logistics innovation is growing in NWA, but shrinking in Dallas, where RevTech Ventures is based, the firm's co-founder David Matthews told me. RevTech recently leased space at OnwardHQ, an entrepreneur and VC co-working space in Bentonville operated by Startup NWA. The firm has no investments in area companies, but Matthews said he's optimistic. San Francisco-based Precursor Ventures' founder Charles Hudson is invested in two NWA-based companies: Carrot, a fertility-focused platform founded by Tammy Sun, and Airtime, co-founded by Phil Libin. Both Sun and Libin relocated from the Bay Area during the pandemic. What we're watching: It will likely be a few months before the scope of the investment impact of the event is known, but some preliminary estimates should be available in the next couple of weeks, Lalany said.
