Fair City's Lidl store removed from Google Maps after customer confusion

A Lidl store in Dublin has been removed from Google Maps following after confusion surrounding its validity was revealed earlier in the week. On Monday, RTÉ's Economics & Public Affairs Editor David Murphy revealed that the Lidl on the set of Fair City had caused a stir from one woman looking to do her weekly shop. The confusion came from a realistic-looking Lidl store which now features in the fictional town of Carrigstown and is built on RTÉ's Donnybrook campus. Pic: RTÉ The store is not open to the public, and is off the back of a three-year product placement deal signed earlier in the year between the supermarket chain and RTÉ. RTÉ Commercial Director Gavin Deans previously confirmed the deal was the largest broadcast product placement agreement in Irish television history. The collaboration between RTÉ and Lidl includes realistic store features like a Deposit Return Machine, in-store backery, and even a modern staff welfare area. Construction of the fake shop began in Mark, and will see fictional store manager Renee introduced as part of a some upcoming plotlines within the show. Pic: RTE While the faux supermarket looks exactly like any other Lidl store, and even appeared on Google Maps, it is not operational with one woman sent on her way earlier in the week. David shared: 'Met a lady outside RTÉ trying to get in to do her shopping i the Lidl on the Fair City set this evening. It's listed on Google Maps. 'I gave her directions to Tesco.' As of Wednesday, the faux Lidl, which was on the app under Lidl Fait City, has been removed from Google Maps. Construction of the fake shop began in Mark, and will see fictional store manager Renee introduced as part of a some upcoming plotlines within the show. Characters in Fair City will interact with the store as part of their daily lives in Carrigstown – and, evidently, some viewers are already mistaking it for a place to pick up their weekly shop. have reached out to Google Ireland.

Lidl store on Fair City set delisted from Google Maps after woman tried to shop there

THE LIDL STORE on the set of RTÉ drama Fair City has been delisted from Google Maps after a woman tried to go there to do her shopping. The soap, which is filmed on the RTÉ campus in Donnybrook, recently partnered with the supermarket chain to open a replica of the store in the fictional north Dublin suburb of Carrigstown. The collaboration is part of a three-year product placement deal, with the Lidl replacing the old Spar shop on the set. Despite it not being a real store, the Fair City Lidl was somehow listed on Google Maps. This led to a woman trying to access the supermarket on Monday evening to pick up a few bits. Thought she was getting a trolley, ended up in a storyline... — Lidl Ireland (@lidl_ireland) July 22, 2025 Advertisement RTÉ's economics and public affairs editor David Murphy took to X to share what happened. 'Met a lady outside RTÉ trying to get in to do her shopping in the Lidl on the Fair City set this evening. It's listed on Google Maps,' he wrote, adding: 'I gave her directions to Tesco.' The replica store has since been removed from Google Maps. A spokesperson told The Journal : 'We use a variety of sources to update Google Maps, and work with a combination of manual and automated processes to ensure that the information is accurate. 'When inaccuracies occur like they did in this case, we do our best to resolve them as quickly as possible. We also always encourage users to report any inaccuracies to us so that they can be corrected,' the spokesperson said. Lidl Ireland has clearly seen the funny side of the confusion. The supermarket reshared Murphy's post and said: 'Thought she was getting a trolley, ended up in a storyline.' The Journal contacted Lidl Ireland for comment. Woman found trying to enter Lidl on Fair City set after being sent by Google Maps

Google Maps seemed to be unable to separate fact from fiction on Monday when it apparently led an unsuspecting woman to the set to do her shopping A woman had to be told to leave the set of RTÉ's Fair City today after Google Maps mistakenly directed her to the artificial Lidl store featured in the soap. Filmed on the RTÉ campus in Donnybrook in Dublin 4, Fair City has a small set depicting the main street in Carrigstown, a fictional suburb in North Dublin. Among the infrastructural props for the town are a community centre, restaurant and shops including the Lidl in question which replaced the old Spar on the show. However, the navigation software of tech giant Google – Google Maps – seemed to be unable to separate fact from fiction on Monday when it apparently led an unsuspecting woman to the set to do her shopping. RTÉ Economics and Public Affairs Editor, David Murphy, posted the hilarious occurrence to his X account wherein he described the woman's predicament. The unorthodox incident elicited some humourous responses from followers of Mr Murphy, with one writing 'Maybe Joe Duffy gave her the directions', while another claimed the same thing happened to them in the nearby Booterstown when they searched for a Lidl store in the vicinity.
