Good Evans, he's back! Fan favourite returns to Scorchers
Perth Scorchers championship-winner and fan favourite Laurie Evans is returning to the club after he was pinched from them by Melbourne Renegades last season. A year after the Renegades snared the English blaster at the Big Bash League's international player draft, Perth brought him back to the club with pick 17 on Thursday afternoon. Another former Scorcher, English left-arm quick David Payne, will also return to Perth. He was picked up in the final round. Evans — who has played 25 matches and scored 653 runs for the Scorchers across the 2021-22 and 2023-24 seasons — was not retained by the Renegades, who instead took Pakistani wicket-keeper Muhammad Rizwan and Hassan Khan. The 37-year-old has strong relationships with senior Scorchers players and staff, including captain Ashton Turner. He is available for the full season, including finals. 'He is a crowd favourite in Perth and performed wonderfully well for us in his time there, so very excited. 'You see with both our picks, with Laurie and with David Payne, both have been with us before, have experienced the success we've had previously and hopefully they can come back and play their roles again and see how we go.' Pakistani white-ball weapon Shaheen Shah Afridi was taken by Brisbane Heat with the first pick in the draft. Payne has played six games for the Scorchers, including the qualifier victory against Sydney Sixers which sent Perth through to a home final against Brisbane Heat in 2023. He played 10 games for Adelaide Strikers in 2023-24, but didn't play at all in last summer's tournament. The 34-year-old is available for between four and six games and the finals series. The one-time England international bolsters a pace attack that lost Jason Behrendorff in the off-season. Payne is a new-ball option, who can also bowl key death overs. It is now likely the Scorchers will use their final remaining domestic list spot on a spinner. Reigning Laurie Sawle medallist Corey Rocchiccioli, who has previously played for both Melbourne franchises, will become a frontrunner for that role, while Willetton spinner Luke Holt could also be considered. The Strikers took Luke Wood with pick two to bolster their pace stocks, while Sam Curran landed at Sydney Sixers with their first-round pick. Teams shied away from picking players who could be in the England squad for the Ashes and neither Jofra Archer or James Anderson were picked up.

Herne Bay man has bladder tumours treated as NHS outpatient
A father-of-four has had bladder tumours removed as an outpatient at a Kent hospital through a pioneering new Payne, from Herne Bay, watched on-screen as surgeons removed a small tumour from his bladder via a procedure known as trans urethral laser 67-year-old, who underwent the procedure last week at Kent and Canterbury Hospital, says he was "absolutely blown over by the experience and the technology".Mr Payne had a previous tumour removed under general anaesthetic four years ago at an East Kent Hospitals University NHS Foundation Trust hospital. He said he was "a little bit nervous" before undergoing the new procedure, as he feared it might not be as effective."But it was exactly the same, just without the general anaesthetic," he said."I watched it on screen. I could see everything, and it was just like watching a documentary. I was even able to direct the consultant to where the tumour was." 'Major step forward' The procedure saw lead consultant for superficial bladder cancer, Georgios Papadopoulos, insert a thin flexible tube with a camera and light into Mr Payne's then took biopsies of the tumour before it was removed using a laser. Any remaining cancer cells were killed using chemotherapy. Mr Papadopoulos said: "This is a major step forward in how we treat patients with small tumours in their bladder."The Prostate Cancer Support Association Kent donated two laser machines, while the League of Friends of the Kent and Canterbury Hospital also helped provide funding.

Canterbury previews: Payne's prized pair primed to parlay his success

FRESH from his Saturday win at Royal Randwick, trainer David Payne aims to carry over his success into Monday's King's Birthday meeting at Canterbury via two of the stable's mid to long term prospects. Two-year-old duo Cosmonaut and Funky Tilda were both selected and purchased by Payne at the Inglis HTBA Yearling Sale in 2024. They were the only two lots which Payne signed off on the day. Whereas Cosmonaut was a bargain at $17,000, Funky Tilda was a much-admired filly at the sale. So much so that her $115,000 price-tag made her the third most expensive yearling of the 162 sold. 'She is quite well bred,'' Payne said. 'She's by Hellbent who is doing well out of a quite a nice damline.' Funky Tilda was the seventh foal of her Flemington-placed dam, Another Sunday, whose best performer to date is the Magic Night runner-up Blanc de Blanc who happens to be a daughter of Hellbent's famous father – I Am Invincible. Funky Tilda also boasts Flight Stakes winner Oohood as well as crack two-year-olds King's Legacy, Zizou and Not A Single Doubt as relatives. Despite the presence of so many precious horses on her family tree, Rory's Jester, Redoute's Choice, Canny Lad, Snippets and Rory's Jester among them, Payne is playing a longer-term game with his blueblood miss. Though quietly confident she will hold her own on debut in Monday's ATC Chase The Dream Maiden Plate (1250m), an awkward draw coupled with a lack of experience may hold her back for now. 'She will need a race,'' Payne said. 'She'll have that run then she'll most probably go to the paddock. 'She is still a bit of a baby but just from what she has shown me in work, she'll most probably run 1600m.' Payne is understandably more bullish on the winning prospects of Cosmonaut which lines-up in a must-see ATC Drinkwise Plate (1250m) to start the day. Payne's colt will be the only one of the eight participants with race experience having two starts on his C.V ahead of today's third. The baldy-faced bay caught the eye in more ways than one when clocking in third at his debut in the $200,000 Inglis 2YO Challenge on Scone Cup Day. He followed up with another honourable effort, this time at Kembla, when making ground late on a testing heavy (8) surface. 'Both times he found the line well which is good,'' Payne said. 'He is still learning. He did a few things wrong both times but I think he'll be better with the step-up in distance (on Monday). 'Just looking at him as a type, he looks like he would get up to a mile (but) he has drawn well on Monday and if he can maybe box-seat, that would be ideal.' Cosmonaut is a member of Cosmic Force's second crop of foals that arrived during the spring of 2022. He is the second foal of his dam, Vodianova, who won twice at Moe over 1623m. His most famous relative is Handsome Ransom who collected the Black Opal Preview and Black Opal Stakes, beating Exceed And Excel, in his first two starts. Cosmonaut is rated a $23 chance in Monday's opening race at Canterbury which is assured a widespread audience given the presence of the much touted $1.4 million yearling Central Coast. The Chris Waller-trained colt is a son of the all-conquering Wootton Bassett and the second foal of the triple Group 1 winner Sunlight. Sunlight's first foal is Dawn Service who won the Listed VRC Exford Plate (1400m) on Makybe Diva Stakes Day at Flemington on September 14. ■ ■ ■ ■ ■ SHOULD Dollar Magic finish runner-up, again, at Canterbury on Monday, she will have equalled racing's perennial placegetter Tom Melbourne's extraordinary tally of 14 seconds. Scott Singleton's mare posted the 13th second of her career when beating all bar Zealously when she resumed at home on the same day as her stablemate Melody Again won the Group 3 Dark Jewel Classic. Sometimes it has been a better horse that has beaten her, sometimes not. 'There have been a few of them that have been quite cruel seconds,'' Singleton says. 'Definitely when Fire Star beat her last prep was a cruel one, but she always does her best so I can't begrudge her. 'If she wins on Monday she is getting towards $600,000 and she hasn't won one fancy race. She's won it from just keeping on turning up and trying hard so she's terrific.' Dollar Magic has finished on the podium at 20 of her 25 starts. One of her four wins was at Canterbury which was also the venue for her only taste of black-type racing on New Year's Day. 'She got caught a little bit with no cover in the Canterbury Sprint and I thought she toughed it out really well,'' Singleton said. 'She's come on a little bit from that first-up run and gets there in really, really good order so I expect her to run well. 'Whether she can beat Zealously is the thing. It went terrific at Scone the other day but if the track is going to be a bit softer than maybe it was at Scone, I think it will suit her more than him.' Dollar Magic will have company in the float from Scone to Sydney from her in-form stablemate Fiorsum Fred which could and perhaps even should be on a hat-trick leading into the ATC Ranvet Handicap (1550m). 'He has been going particularly well at home and pulling up well from his runs. He's in good shape.' For all his recent heroics Fiorsum Fred was allotted 62.5kg in Monday's mission. 'I know it sounds a lot when you say it but after the 3kg comes off and when you look at what everyone else has got comparative to you, I don't think he is that badly treated to be honest,'' Singleton said. Shohisha's stunning win at Randwick highlights David Payne's mastery in training strategies
The maestro David Payne has enjoyed a hugely successful training career by not following convention. So, we shouldn't have been surprised when Payne produced another training masterclass when Shohisha won the Drinkwise Mile Handicap (1600m). Payne's filly was jumping from 1100m straight to the tough Randwick 'mile' course and it seems most punters and form experts had put a line through her chances. Shohisha drifted in betting to start the rank outsider at $15 in a competitive seven-horse field but she finished powerfully wide out to score an exciting win. But Payne, who has trained over 100 Group 1 winners, didn't know what all the fuss was about. 'Shohisha has been looking for the mile, if it is in their genes, they will get the trip,' Payne said. 'It didn't worry me she was going from 1100m to 1600m because in South Africa and in England, that's the way they train. 'If you run a horse out of its comfort zone, they will struggle, it's common sense. 'I was a jockey and if you ride them in a 1000m race, you are pushing and pushing all the way. 'It's often a harder race than if you run them at 1400m or 1600m where they can settle.' Only a length separated the first six over the line with Shohisha ($15), ridden by Tom Sherry, came from a clear last on the turn and arrived late to win by a nose from Pippie Beach ($13) with Piggyback ($5.50) a half head away third. Sherry admitted he was concerned about the slow early tempo set by Bright Red, ridden by Nash Rawiller. 'It's always a worry when you see Nash (Rawiller, Bright Red) in front,' Sherry said. 'There was not a lot of speed horses and he was taking complete control of the race but I still had confidence in my filly. 'Obviously, Mr Payne is a master at jumping them up massively in trip. From 1100m to 1600m is not an easy task. 'Off the slow tempo, I was able to utilise her turn of foot and I was extremely happy with her performance today. 'I have a lot of time for this filly, she has a great attitude. She attacked the line strongly, ran right through it, I'm sure she will get further and in better class, too.'' Shohisha improved her race record to three wins from just seven starts and although the filly obviously handles rain-affected tracks, Payne doesn't plan to keep her in training during winter. 'We will aim her at races like the Golden Pendant.' Meanwhile, emerging apprentice Anna Roper had a contender for ride of the day as she drove Thunderlips through the pack to win the Asahi Super Dry Handicap (1400m). Thunderlips ($5) burst between runners to score by a long neck and deny jockey Ash Morgan his fourth winner of the day on Anythink Goes ($21) with Wooloowin ($51) running an improved race for third, a long neck further back. Trainer Bjorn Baker lauded Roper after the fast finishing win of Thunderlips. 'An excellent ride by Anna,' Baker said. 'She was able to overcome a wide gate and put him in a good spot. 'But he's a strange horse because it looks like he's only plodding but then he picks up late.' Roper said 'everything went to plan' on Thunderlips until the field reached the 600m. 'He was completely off the bit at the 600m and I was worried he wasn't going to find anything,' Roper said. 'But when the gap opened up at the 300m he wanted to sprint through it. He's hard work but it's nice to get the win on him.'
