Lee Carsley's side retained the title won two years ago which brings England's total haul to four, but they were pushed all the way by a German side who came into the final as favourites and had beaten England in the group stage. "I'm so happy for them; to be European champions for the second time is a great achievement and the challenge now is to do it again in two years," Carsley told Channel 4. "I'm going to try and enjoy tonight. It's important. I love my job, I'm very proud of the job I do, I love working with the players. It's important they have a shandy or two tonight." England took the lead in the fifth minute when Omari Hutchinson had his effort saved by the keeper and a defensive clearance fell to Harvey Elliot who had time and space to pick his spot and steer a low shot inside the near post. Elliot began the move for England's second goal with a chipped pass into the path of James McAtee and when the midfielder found his route blocked by two defenders he laid off the ball to Hutchinson who drilled his strike through the keeper's legs. Hutchinson somersaulted away in celebration after his 24th-minute goal but Germany pulled one back in added time before the break. Paul Nebel crossed from the wing and Nelson Weiper rose unchallenged to power a header past England keeper James Beadle. The equaliser came in the 61st minute from a corner kick which went all the way to Nebel, out wide in the area, who pulled inside and drove the ball into the far top corner. Both sides created further chances but extra time was needed and England went back in front within two minutes when substitute Tyler Morton floated a perfect ball into the box and the unmarked Rowe headed home. "I came into the game with the mindset of doing anything I could to help the team," Rowe told Channel 4. "I wasn't starting but I knew, at some point, all of us on the bench would have to come on, make a difference and help the team to push it over the line." Rowe replaced Elliot at the end of normal time, making an immediate impact. After his goal there was no way back for Germany as England held firm under relentless pressure, with the Germans hitting the woodwork in added time. The defeat brought the Germans' 20-game unbeaten run to an end. Their last loss came against England in the 2023 tournament and two years to the day since that game, England triumphed again. England senior manager Thomas Tuchel was watching from the stands and the German, struggling to impress in his early days in charge, may well look to some of Carsley's side, and tactics, for a brighter English future. "I've had a chance with the senior team and I love that, so the best thing I can do is help the pathway and try and help the senior team," Carsley said. Athletics-Australian teen sensation Gout betters his own 200m national record
Athletics - Ostrava Golden Spike Meeting - Mestsky Stadion, Ostrava, Czech Republic - June 24, 2025 Australia's Gout Gout celebrates winning the men's 200m REUTERS/David W Cerny OSTRAVA, Czech Republic (Reuters) -Australian teenage sprinter Gout Gout crushed the 200 metres field in his first senior race abroad on Tuesday, bettering his own national record by two hundredths of a second to finish in 20.02 seconds at the Ostrava Golden Spike. The 17-year-old ran a textbook race in his European debut at the World Athletics Continental Tour Gold event in the Czech Republic, crossing the line 0.17 seconds ahead of Cuban Reynier Mena, while Briton Nethaneel Mitchell-Blake (20.60) was third. "I feel good. New personal best, new national record in my first European race," the Queensland schoolboy told reporters. "I don't feel any pressure. Because as soon as I step out on that track, it's just me by myself and what I've got to do — my favourite thing, and that's to run. "So, I just go out there and run and nothing stops me from doing that ... Get some more races in me and (the 20-second barrier) will drop for sure." Gout has drawn comparisons to Jamaican great Usain Bolt and he made headlines in December when he broke Peter Norman's national record that had stood for 56 years in 20.04. He ran a 19.84-second 200 and 9.99 seconds in the 100m at the Australian national championships in Perth in April but a strong tailwind rendered both illegal. His performances were strong enough, however, to earn him a spot on Australia's team for the World Championships in Tokyo in September. Ice hockey-U.S. beat holders Czech Republic at worlds, Canada overpower Sweden
Ice Hockey - IIHF World Championships - Group B - Czech Republic v United States - Jyske Bank Boxen Arena, Herning, Denmark - May 20, 2025 Frank Nazar of the U.S. celebrates scoring their second goal with teammates REUTERS/David W Cerny Ice Hockey - IIHF World Championships - Group B - Czech Republic v United States - Jyske Bank Boxen Arena, Herning, Denmark - May 20, 2025 Tage Thompson of the U.S. in action with Czech Republic's David and Karel Vejmelka REUTERS/David W Cerny HERNING, Denmark - The United States came out on top of an ill-tempered affair and beat holders Czech Republic 5-2 at the men's World Championships on Tuesday to finish second in Group B, while Canada topped their group after a 5-3 win over co-hosts Sweden. The U.S., who have failed to win a stand-alone world championship since 1933, will face Finland in Thursday's quarter-finals. Josh Doan put the U.S. ahead midway through an opening period in which the Americans had three power plays and the Czechs four, but neither side took advantage. David Pastrnak's goal in the opening minute of the second period drew the Czechs level and Martin Necas scored on a power play to put them ahead despite the U.S. outshooting the Czechs 38 to 16 in the first two periods. The U.S. roared back with four unanswered goals in the final period, with Frank Nazar netting twice and Logan Cooley and Andrew Peeke also scoring. The Czechs were looking to win the group but ended up third, level on points with the U.S., and meet Sweden next. Switzerland, runners-up last year, took top spot after a 4-1 win over Kazakhstan and will take on Austria. Austria had no option but to win against Latvia, and they did so in style, racking up a shock 6-1 victory to reach the playoff round for the first time since 1994. "It's huge," Austria's Vinzenz Rohrer, who scored two goals, said. "It's not guaranteed for us, so when we get here it's a special thing. We take pride in this." Canada, 28-times champions, bounced back from Monday's loss to Finland, and proved too strong for the Swedes who had the backing of a partisan crowd at the Avicii Arena in Stockholm. Travis Sanheim put Canada ahead after 18 seconds before Elias Lindholm levelled when the Canadians had the power play advantage, but the Swedes were 3-1 down by the end of the first period. With Canada 5-2 up, Sweden went for broke in the final minutes, pulling their goaltender, but could only cut the deficit by one. Canada finished one point ahead of Sweden in Group A and now meet the other co-hosts Denmark who took fourth spot in Group B after a 2-1 shootout win over Germany. Finland, third in Group A, ended the preliminary round with a 2-1 win over Slovakia. REUTERS Join ST's Telegram channel and get the latest breaking news delivered to you.
