Willey and Gardner handed Rockets' captaincy
Trent Rockets have named David Willey and Ash Gardner as captain of their men's and women's teams England all-rounder Willey, 35, replaces Lewis Gregory as captain for his first season at Trent Gardner takes over from England skipper Nat Sciver-Brunt, who stepped down from the role to manage her 28, joined the Rockets for her first taste of The Hundred last year, finishing as both the side's second-highest run-scorer and leading wicket-taker."Playing for the Rockets last year was so much fun and it will be incredible this year to lead the team," said Gardner."Taking over from Nat is an honour, and we have a great squad this year so I'm really excited to get going as captain."Trent Rockets' first fixtures are against Birmingham Phoenix on 8 August. Northamptonshire Steelbacks' players deserve more credit for their T20 Blast performances, according to captain David Willey. A 10-run win over Birmingham Bears on Wednesday made it six wins from their opening six games of the competition. "There are some brilliant players here - we've got Saif [Zaib] in The Hundred this year but there are a few more guys I would hope would get recognition for their performances and get picked up for a wildcard," the former England all-rounder told BBC Radio Northampton. "We're trying to stay in the present, taking one step at a time and we're actually talking about one ball at a time - and will try to back it up against Durham on Friday." Birmingham looked on course to end the Steelbacks' 100% record when they were 94-1 in the 10th over, chasing 185 for victory, but George Scrimshaw removed Tom Latham and Sam Hain in quick succession before Willey grabbed the prize wicket of Dan Mousley and took a stunning catch in the deep to dismiss Ed Barnard. Advertisement "He [Scrimshaw] is a very talented bowler - he's got some great attributes and to have him out there bowling with the breeze behind him on a pitch which offered him assistance was a game-changer for us and I'm delighted to see him doing well," added Willey. Bopara inspires Northants, Foxes edge out Lightning
Ravi Bopara produced a T20 batting masterclass to inspire Northamptonshire Steelbacks to victory in an entertaining, high-scoring contest against Derbyshire ex-England batter hit an unbeaten 84 off 46 balls to help the hosts recover from 24-3 and set a target of 195, which Derbyshire fell just seven runs short in the the North Group, Leicestershire Foxes ended Lancashire Lightning's 100% winning start to the season with a five-wicket win in a hard-fought encounter at Old who were looking to make it four wins from four, set a target of 146 but the Foxes kept their composure to chase it down with nine balls to spare.
