Dawn Meats founder Dan Browne dies aged 88 as tributes pour in for ‘an amazing, successful businessman' and ‘gentleman'

He was also an adored grandfather to Danielle, Andrea, Stephen, Luke, Patrick, Faye, Ella, Kate, Leah and Andrew. He will also be greatly missed by his nieces, nephews, extended family and friends. Tributes have remembered Dan as a "highly valued partner" and "an amazing, successful businessman". He graduated from UCD in 1959 with a degree in Agricultural science. SUCESSFUL MOVES Later, moving away from a research focus he became manager of the Cork Marts - IMP plant at Midleton. A year after this move in 1975 he became president of the Irish Grassland Association for a year. Advertisement This move to the meat industry was significant as Dan went on to make one of his best known ventures. He was founded Dawn Meats alongside the Quelly brothers in 1980. He held the position of managing director of the company for 27 years, before becoming a board member in 2007. The company remains largely successful today with over 8,000 employees over 12 countires. Advertisement The popular business man was also the chairman of Bord Bia from 2008 to 2011. 'REMARKABLE LEADER' Dawn Meats paid tribute to their founder describing him as a 'pioneering figure in Irish agriculture". They said in a statement: "He was a remarkable leader and visionary, serving as Managing Director of Dawn Meats for 27 years and developing the business into one of Europe's leading meat processing companies. 'He was also a valued member of the board of Dawn Meats and through his wise counsel, he continued to play a key role in the further success of the company. Tributes poured in from many people who remembered Dan for his remarkable business moves and research. Former TD Ned O'Keefe said: "Deepest sympathy to the Browne family on the death of Dan. Dan was a first class researcher in Moore Park and then became an amazing, successful businessman." Global McDonald's system said: "We're so sorry to hear of Dan's passing and offer our sincere condolences to the Browne Family. 'INSPIRATION FOR GENERATIONS' Gerry Boyle, Former Director Teagasc paid a heartfelt and length tribute to Dan. He said: "Irish agriculture has lost someone who made an immense contribution. Although he went on to make an huge impact on Ireland's meat industry, it was through his contribution to the establishment of grassland-based dairy research at Teagasc Moorepark that he'll be forever remembered in research circles. "Thanks to Dan's efforts, and those of his pioneering colleagues, Moorepark is now one of the world's leading dairy research centres. 'WONDERFUL GENTLEMAN' On a personal level man people remembered their friend Dan in heartfelt tributes. One person wrote: "My deepest condolences to the Browne family on the passing of a truly great man. "Among many others, Dan gave me a big break in life for which I am forever grateful." Advertisement FUNERAL DETAILS The popular man will repose at his home in Waterford tomorrow evening. His funeral mass will take place on Friday at 11am at St Mary's Church, Ballygunner, Waterford and will be laid to rest in the adjoining cemetery. The family will walk to the church from the family home for 10.30am where condolences can be offered before the mass.

Mr Browne from Grantstown, Waterford, and formerly of Douglas and Fermoy, Co Cork, died peacefully at University Hospital Waterford (UHW) on Tuesday. In a company statement they said Mr Browne was "a pioneering figure in Irish agriculture" who made an "outstanding contribution to the Irish agri-food industry, and the meat industry in particular'. Mr Browne began his career as a research worked with the agricultural research institute An Foras Talúntais (now Teagasc) in Wexford before moving back to Cork in 1959, where he developed a national dairy research centre at Moorepark, outside Fermoy. 15 years later, Mr Browne joined the meat industry, becoming manager of the Cork Marts - IMP plant at Midleton. Mr Browne retired from his role as managing director in 2007 but continued to be a board member of the company. He also chaired the boards of Teagasc from 1993 to 1998 and Bord Bia from 2008 to 2011. Reposal will take place at his family home on Thursday from 2pm to 6pm with his Requiem Mass taking place on Friday at St Mary's Church, Ballygunner at 11am, followed by burial in the adjoining cemetery. The company board expressed their deepest sympathies to Mr Browne's family.

Tributes have been paid following the death of a pioneering figure in Ireland's agri-food industry, Dan Browne, who co-founded global food giant Dawn Meats and helped grow it into a €3bn-a-year business. Mr Browne, who came from a farming background in Douglas, Co Cork, died peacefully at University Hospital Waterford on Tuesday, surrounded by his family. He was 88. The board of Dawn Meats — which today has annual revenue of €3bn and employs 8,000 people globally — led the tributes, describing Mr Browne as a visionary leader in Irish agriculture who made a profound impact on the agri-food and meat sectors. 'He was a remarkable leader and visionary, serving as Managing Director of Dawn Meats for 27 years and developing the business into one of Europe's leading meat processing companies,' the company said. 'He was also a valued member of the board of Dawn Meats and through his wise counsel, he continued to play a key role in the further success of the company. 'Through his work at Dawn Meats and his wider contribution to agriculture and the agri-food industry, Mr Browne leaves a lasting legacy and he will be greatly missed.' Mr Browne began his career as a research scientist. He worked with An Foras Talúntais, the agricultural research institute, initially at the grassland research centre at Johnstown Castle, Wexford, before moving back to Cork in 1959, where he developed a national dairy research centre at Moorepark, outside Fermoy. As the third scientist hired at Moorepark, he played a central role in developing it into a world-class research centre over the next 15 years. In 1974, he left research to join the meat industry, becoming manager of the Cork Marts IMP plant in Midleton. In 1980, Mr Browne co-founded Dawn Meats in Waterford alongside John Queally and the late Peter Queally, serving as managing director for 27 years. Under his leadership, the company rapidly expanded into one of Europe's top meat processors. He retired as managing director in 2007 but continued to serve on the board and advise senior management as the business grew to employ over 8,000 people in 12 countries, generating more than €3bn in annual revenue. The company sources grass-fed cattle and lamb from over 40,000 family farms for processing at its 11 Irish and 13 UK sites, exporting to more than 50 countries. It processes approximately one million cattle and 3.5 million sheep annually. In 2011, Mr Browne received an honorary doctorate of science from UCD, his alma mater, in recognition of his vision, innovation, and outstanding contribution to agriculture. He chaired the board at Teagasc from 1993 to 1998, led Bord Bia from 2008 to 2011, and had been chair of Waterford Airport since 2010. He served as the company's managing director for 27 years, developing the business into one of the leading players in the processing sector. The company employs more than 8,000 staff in 12 countries and has an annual revenue of over €3 billion.
