Possible tornado causes tree, building damage in upstate NY: NWS to investigate
Trees were topped and some buildings in Ontario County were damaged in what meteorologists said may have been a tornado on Monday evening.
A survey team from the National Weather Service in Buffalo on Tuesday morning will head to Phelps, Ontario County, where it is believed that a "possible tornado" touched down and caused damage in the area, said Weather Service Meteorologist Heather Kenyon.
The Weather Service received reports of tree and structural damage as well as sightings of a funnel cloud, she said.
The Weather Service started receiving reports of the damage between 6:30 and 7 p.m. Monday, so it was believed that the burst occurred just before then. There was not a tornado warning in the area at the time, she said.
Footage of the area shows several heavily damaged houses - including several now without a roof. Trees in the area have been uprooted and snapped. The DeBoover Family Farm on County Road 23 in Phelps sustained heavy damage, the family reported but no people or animals were injured in the burst, they reported on social media.
County officials Monday night closed numerous roads in the area due to storm damage, including County Road 23 - between Melvin Hill and Fort Hill roads - and Fort Hill Road - from the Village of Phelps to County Road 23.
