Two-time MVP Mycah Go fulfills dream of ending collegiate career as a champ

NCAA Mycah Go capped off her collegiate career on a high note as De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde won its fourth straight title on Wednesday. In Benilde's four-peat run in NCAA women's volleyball, Go played with the Lady Blazers for three seasons, while she was part of the coaching staff in Season 98 as she was recovering from her injury then. "Siyempre, sobrang happy," Go said. "Lahat ng efforts namin sa team, lalo na binreak namin 'yung pinaghirapan ng batchmates ko, nalungkot din naman kami pero sabi nga namin different story na 'to," she said while referring to the loss against Colegio de San Juan de Letran early in the season which snapped Benilde's 43-game winning streak. On top of being a three-time champion, Go was named as the league's Most Valuable Player for the second time around, and was also awarded the Finals MVP honors. Despite her achievements, Go's collegiate journey was not a smooth sailing one, particularly when she sustained an ACL injury in Season 98. "Nahirapan ako sa pinagdaanan ko, hindi ko alam kung anong mangyayari sa akin nung na-injure ako," she said. "Masaya lang ako naging patient na kasi sa sarili ko. Hindi ko tinigilan talaga. And di ko naman in-expect na ganito 'yung magiging outcome." Even she admitted that her second MVP award was an unexpected one. "Gusto ko lang talaga umuwi nang champion. Gusto ko lang umalis ng CSB nang champion. 'Yun lang talaga hinihingi ko sa mga teammates ko." Now, she is set to join ZUS Coffee, also handled by Benilde's Jerry Yee, in the professional league. "Ibang journey na rin 'yun," she said. "Siyempre, tuluy-tuloy lang 'yung learnings. Kung ano 'yung dapat sabihin ng coach, tuloy-tuloy lang din sa pag-take n'un, kung paano i-apply sa pros. Siyempre, ibang level na yun. So, makikinig lang." —JKC, GMA Integrated News

DLS-CSB, DLSU designers develop banana leather as eco-friendly alternative to synthetic leather

Designers from the De La Salle-College of Saint Benilde and De La Salle University Manila have developed banana leather as an eco-friendly alternative to synthetic leather. In Martin Javier's "Game Changer" segment in "24 Oras" Monday, Tal de Guzman, a faculty member in DLS-CSB's Fashion Design and Merchandising Program, shared that they use banana waste such as chunks and peels for the material. "Maraming ways na banana chunks and peels. We are calling this a bio-based leather kasi we're mixing banana and alginate. Consumers now are really more conscious about what they buy, and we want na bigyan sila ng alternative," she said. She developed the banana leather with Micca Amor and Vinz Mamalateo. According to De Guzman, the banana leather will decompose when disposed of since it's made of biodegradable material. "Even if it goes to the landfill, hindi lang siya makaka-affect dun, parang kumbaga magdedecompose lang siya," she said. To create the banana leather, Amor explained that they first source banana waste, which undergoes extraction and treatment for anti-mold. They then combine the banana fiber with a custom bio-based mixture. The team's designs also showcase the banana's natural fibers. Per de Guzman, they want people to know that their material is made of plants, adding, "We don't want to imitate just animal leather." She also attested to the banana leather's durability and the material's potential to allow consumers to choose without having to compromise. "Because it's with alginate, it's actually pretty durable. It's malleable, hindi siya nasisira nang madali kahit i-crumple mo siya," she said. "We can come to a point where it's not just a compromise. Hindi siya galing sa hayop, hindi siya plastic. More designers really want to be able to explore materials that won't kill our planet," she added. —CDC, GMA Integrated News
