Come run with athletics legend Zola Budd
Pretoria boasts an exciting new mass participation 5km Run/Walk event following the launch of Run with Zola, a race which takes place at the Harlequins Rugby Club in Pretoria this coming Saturday, 28 June. The event pays tribute to the legendary Zola Budd, who will also be in the field, while it will also raise awareness on gender-based violence. The field for this race is capped at 5000 and for the convenience of participants, the race will only start at 09:00, which is later than the normal time for road races. Zola Budd is a worldwide sporting icon. The barefoot prodigy broke numerous world records, became a symbol of South Africa's oppression and was infamously blamed for Mary Decker's Olympic fall in 1984. 'We would like South Africa to unite and come together with the Run with Zola initiative,' said event media manager, Ray de Vries, who coached and managed 14 Comrades winners during his illustrious career in the sport. De Vries encouraged athletes of all ages to run or walk 5km and pay tribute to Budd. In doing so, they will also show unity as the road race community against gender-based violence. According to De Vries the Harlequins club is a delightful venue for the inaugural event. 'It boasts ample parking and world class facilities. It's also centrally located in Pretoria. Zola has an excellent network and is one of the best known sporting personalities in South Africa and in many parts of the world. She has vast experience as a brand ambassador, coach and mentor. Many well-known personalities will join us for the run,' he remarked. The Run with Zola initiative is passionately dedicated to creating awareness of for this campaign against gender-based violence. 'Everyone can take part in Run with Zola. It provides such a delightful platform. Wheelchairs, crutches and especially bare feet are welcome,' De Vries emphasized. The organizers also want to establish this campaign as a celebration of the human spirit and the joy of running and walking. 'It's the coming together of South Africans for the common purpose of enjoying themselves and being part of something special,' De Vries commented. For De Vries and the organizers, this is more than just a race. 'It is a time for us to do life differently and to start to dream again. Whether you are fat or thin or just want to give up smoking. Auckland City proud to be at CWC despite possible deficit
dpa Berlin Auckland City face a financial deficit at the Club World Cup but are immensely proud to be represented at the new-look tournament in the United States. The only amateur club among the 32 teams receives around $3.6 in appearance fee from the overall tournament prize money of $1 billion. The sum is only around one-tenth of what their first opponents Bayern Munich get. That match is on Sunday, with Argentina's Boca Juniors and Lisbon club Benfica the other opponents. Victories will lead to additional prize money but they are rather unlikely for the New Zealand part timers who face a deficit because most of the appearance fee goes to the domestic federation which distributes it among the domestic league clubs. But the chance of playing at the global stage by far outweighs the financial aspect, with striker Ryan de Vries speaking of 'an unbelievable opportunity to represent our country and region.' Auckland created an upset at the 2014 edition when they finished a surprise third from seven teams, beating Morocco's Moghreb Tetouan in a play-off, Algeria's ES Setif in the quarter-finals and Cruz Azul of Mexico in the match for third place. 'Football gives you an opportunity to achieve so many things individually and as a team which you thought were impossible,' De Vries said. Players had to take unpaid leave from their jobs 11 years ago becauzse no one expected the success run. With the tournament now expanded, players must use their annual holiday or decide between their job and football.

Ferrari targets Le Mans hat-trick
AFP | Le Mans Ferrari's Formula One fortunes may be flagging but the Italian constructor start this weekend's Le Mans 24 Hour Race as favourites targeting a third consecutive triumph in motorsport's fabled endurance classic. Roger Federer is acting as celebrity starter with the tennis icon getting the 93rd edition of the jewel in four-wheeled endurance racing's crown underway at 1600 local time (1400GMT) on Saturday. Twenty-four hours later, through daylight, darkness and dawn, the 21 elite Hypercars will battle it out over 300 laps (4,000 kilometres plus) in front of a sell-out 320,000 crowd burning the midnight oil with copious quantities of coffee and beer. Ferrari made a triumphant return after a 50 year absence to land Le Mans' centenary race in 2023, repeating the feat last year. The Prancing Horse stable ended Toyota's run of five consecutive wins from 2018 to 2022 with the Japanese manufacturer out to reclaim their crown 40 years after their first Le Mans appearance. A shake-up in the regulations for 2023 sparked fresh interest in the premier class and this year Ferrari, Toyota and Porsche face challenges from Aston Martin, Cadillac, BMW, Alpine, and Peugeot. Ferrari's position as the team to beat is bolstered by their bright start to the season, reeling off wins in the first three world endurance races in Qatar, Imola and Belgium. But Antonio Fuoco, who took the chequered flag 12 months ago along with Miguel Molina and Nicklas Nielsen, is taking nothing for granted. 'Compared to last year, everyone is closer to the other, it's going to be a tough battle,' forecast the 29-year-old Italian driver. Ferrari team manager Batti Pregliasco is wary of the threat posed by Toyota. 'The idea of winning a third Le Mans in a row would be magnificent,' he said. 'But the Toyotas are very strong here because they have the experience, the ability, and the means to win.' 'Bitter-sweet' Nyck De Vries was sharing driving duties in the Toyota that came off second best in 2024, and the 30-year-old Dutchman is hungry for revenge. 'Finishing second last year was a great result but after such a long race, with so many different emotions, it felt bitter-sweet, so we want to put that right this year,' said De Vries, summarily sacked by Red Bull's then Alpha Tauri sister team midway through the 2023 F1 season. De Vries is one of a cluster of former F1 drivers including former world champion Jenson Button seduced by the lure of adding their name on the hallowed Le Mans roll of honour - just as Fernando Alonso did in 2018-19 for Toyota, the veteran Spaniard emulating the likes of F1 greats from yesteryear like Graham Hill, Phil Hill and Jochen Rindt. Joining the 21 Hypercars are 17 entries in the LMP2 class and 24 in the LMGT3 category in an event that has been visited by tragedy over the years, with 22 drivers perishing. Le Mans, where eye-watering speeds of up to 400kmh have been reached on the Sarthe circuit's Mulsanne straight, marks the 70th anniversary of the 1955 disaster this weekend when pieces of debris from Pierre Levegh's car rained down on the crowd, killing 81 spectators, although a definitive death toll was never established. A sombre reminder then of the dangers faced by the 186 drivers taking part -- including the all women 'Iron Dames' LMGT3 team of Sarah Bovy, Rahel Fry and Celia Martin. The encouraging news for this brave bunch is that the French met office forecast looks benign, with no rain or storms predicted over the weekend which kicks off with qualifying for pole on Thursday night.

Mat-Su mayor files to run as a Republican for Alaska governor
Jun. 12—Edna DeVries, mayor of the Mat-Su Borough, announced on Thursday that she is running as a Republican to be Alaska's next governor. DeVries, 83, has been mayor of the Mat-Su since 2021. She moved to Palmer in 1969 and was mayor of the city for over five years. She served two years as a state senator in the 1980s. In a Thursday interview, DeVries said there are many issues facing Alaska and that she wants to focus on "listening to people, transparency in government and limited government." DeVries, a conservative, said that she feels "very strongly" about election integrity and touted a 2022 ban on voting machines in the Mat-Su borough. She said that she supports following a statutory Permanent Fund dividend, and said Alaska needs to "rein in spending" to address its fiscal challenges. "We need to live within our means. And I don't see the state doing that right now," she said. DeVries said that she is a supporter of school choice. She was critical of a substantial education funding boost approved by the Legislature this year. She said that "we need to have some accountability." DeVries on Thursday filed a letter of intent with the Division of Elections to run as governor next year. That is the first step in launching a campaign, allowing the candidate to raise and spend money. DeVries said filing that letter is "sort of a testing of the waters." "Let's see what the response is out there, and get out and talk to the people to see if they see the same needs in our state as I do," she added. Alaska Gov. Mike Dunleavy, a Republican, is in the penultimate year of his second term. The Alaska Constitution forbids governors from holding office for a third consecutive term. Three other Republicans have filed letters of intent to run for governor in the November 2026 election: Lt. Gov. Nancy Dahlstrom, former Fairbanks Sen. Click Bishop, and business owner Bernadette Wilson.
