July 9 South Africa (Scottsville) form analysis

Race 1 (1,600m) (1) OPERA FAN made a smart debut for her new stable but has had her chances, although she had some promising Highveld form. Dean Kannemeyer has a stable of promising juveniles and the unraced (2) GIMMEANOTHERVIKING is bred in the purple. (5) OMNIA was much improved second time when trying a little further on the Poly. She should come on from that effort. (4) GATHERING WINTERcompletes the shortlist. Race 2 (1,600m) Paul Lafferty's runner (10) BRUH has come on with each outing and looks primed for this. (2) FRENCH WAR LORD has shown up well in two sprints and the step up in trip from a plum draw can see him home. (4) MASTER SPY was a well-beaten fourth over the trip last time, but he can improve on that effort. (1) PIED PIPER showed up well on debut and steps up to a more suitable trip. Race 3 (1,200m) (10) XENOPHON looks primed to fire after two smart efforts. Narrowly beaten last run and he should go close again. (4) NEXT OF KIN showed up well on debut over course and distance, and one can expect good improvement from him. (8) CARDINAL CHIEF ran on strongly on debut and the extra furlong should suit. (9) RAGING MOON has not been far back in two outings and has a money chance. Race 4 (1,200m) (9) CELESTIAL DIAMOND was a beaten even-money favourite last start. She has shown up well in both starts and should run another good race. (16) LUCIENNE has put in three good efforts and should be involved in the finish again. (5) TRAIL RUNNER was a beaten favourite at her last two on the Highveld. She was not far behind and should feature. (1) CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT made a smart debut at long odds and is one to watch in the betting. Race 5 (1,600m) (5) WORLD OF ROYALTY steps up to a mile but has two good sprints in the bag. Beaten favourite last run but this trip should suit. (1) EL CAPITAN has the best draw and has not been out of the money in four starts since his return from the Cape. (8) LIMELIGHT LEGEND has been runner-up in his last three and stays the trip well, so he has a strong chance. (9) QUEEN OF THE AIR showed up well in her first run back from a lengthy break and is one to watch. Race 6 (1,750m) (5) PRINCESS PALACE is seldom far behind and steps up in trip. She has a handy weight and rates a strong winning chance. (3) HODGEPODGE shoulders top weight but has consistent form and should be in the firing line again. (10) ELEMBEE should not be far off. (9) ANOTHER DREAM is a recent maiden winner but won well from a wide draw and can be involved in the finish. Race 7 (1,750m) (4) DANCING ON A CLOUD has been a touch disappointing since running out an easy maiden winner on this course. He does seem better than his last two and gets another chance. (6) LOCK AND KEY has been a beaten favourite at her last two but has been runner-up and can go one better in this line-up. (2) ROYAL INVITATION has improved at her last two and comes from a Cape stable that does not have many runners up for the season. (5) TIRPITZ steps up in trip. One to watch in the betting. Race 8 (1,000m) (4) MAJOR TOMMIE is lightly raced and was not far behind in his handicap debut. He has a big weight but should be right up there. (12) B FIFTYTWO was close-up at long odds last start. He should be competitive. (11) RHYTHM is holding form and goes well on this trip. Not out of it. The form behind (10) RAFA'S BOY could be the key. He jumped seven points in the handicap for his last win but now gets a 4kg claimer aboard.

The Real Prince reigns supreme at Durban July

The Real Prince narrowly got the better of race favourite Eight On Eighteen to win the Hollywoodbets Durban July. Photo: Graham Daniel/Gameplan Media A record breaking crowd of fashion enthusiasts, punters and revellers converged at Greyville Racecourse for the 2025 Hollywoodbets Durban July, the largest horseracing event in Africa, on Saturday. The event showcased a mix of high-stakes horse racing, bold fashion statements and vibrant cultural expression under the theme 'Marvels of Mzansi'. In the main event, The Real Prince delivered a decisive performance to claim victory in the Grade One R5 million race. Ridden by Craig Zackey and trained by Dean Kannemeyer, The Real Prince edged out race favourite Eight On Eighteen in a tight finish, with Selukwe in third and Royal Victory in fourth. 'The Real Prince's full brother Gimme A Prince was crowned Champion Sprinter two seasons back so there was always a question mark hanging over his ability to stay the 2200m trip of the July,' Hollywoodbets said in a statement. 'That was answered in no uncertain manner as The Real Prince fought off Eight On Eighteen who was attempting to become the first three-year-old to win the Grade One World Sports Betting Cape Met and the July in the same season.' The early race pace was set by Oriental Charm, who kept the field bunched up. Eight On Eighteen, drawn at 11, struggled to find the rail early on but surged ahead coming into the final turn. However, Zackey's measured ride on The Real Prince proved decisive as he closed the gap and edged ahead in a head-to-head finish. It was a nod of the heads at the line but Kannemeyer had his fourth July winner in the bag and his second for Lady Christine Laidlaw and Khaya Stables. Reflecting on the strategic preparation, Kannemeyer said: 'Where were we going to place him? The first time we tried him over a mile he won by six lengths. Great run in the Drill Hall.' 'If we run him in the Gold Challenge and run fourth the handicapper is going to be looking for you. You have to come in at the right time with the right weight and we got the right draw.' While the track hosted high drama, the infield was alive with fierce competition as fashionistas battled it out on the Pulse Stage. Entrants dazzled in four categories: Most Striking Couple, Classic Racewear – Female, Classic Racewear – Male, and Exceptional Raceday Hat or Fascinator. Judges Kathrin Kidger, Sandile 'The Duke' Mngadi, and Hollywood Foundation spokesperson Vuyisile Ngobese faced a tough task selecting winners from the talent pool. Durban designer Pregasen Govender made a notable comeback after six years, drawing inspiration from the Indian Ocean, traditional jewellery, Japanese design elements and local flora. 'Durban's greatness lies in its beaches and its culture,' Govender said. 'My designs are a celebration of that unique blend.' In the main fashion categories, Happiness Mkhwanazi won Classic Racewear – Female, followed by Ciara Mikkelsen and Nomonde Langa. The Classic Racewear – Male category saw Mnotho Ngema crowned winner, ahead of Siphesihle Mkhize and Athenkosi Mfungula. Pamela Shabane and Larnelle Maddocks won Most Striking Couple, with Kevin Ellis and Gareth Greaves taking second, and Kish Ramdewu and Cherilee Thangalan in third. Nirvana Nolene took the top honour in the Exceptional Raceday Hat or Fascinator category. The event also spotlighted emerging talent in the Hollywoodbets Young Designer Awards. Andile Cele from uMgungundlovu TVET College took first place with her Ndebele-inspired design influenced by Dr Esther Mahlangu. 'I am flabbergasted,' Cele said. 'This is beyond amazing.' The 2025 Hollywoodbets Durban July broke records due to its significant economic impact, with estimates by the eThekwini Municipality indicating it would contribute some R700 million to the city's GDP, while event attendance reached a peak with approximately 50,000 fans descending on the racecourse. Betting activity also set new benchmarks, with tote betting opening to record pools, including a R20 million jackpot and a R15 million Pick 6 carryover, according to Hollywoodbets.

June 29 South Africa (Scottsville) form analysis

Race 1 (1,100m) Watch the betting on the well-bred Dean Kannemeyer newcomer (1) PRINCESS OF GAUL. (5) FLYING SOUTH has improved with every run for Glen Kotzen and looks primed. (2) WHAT A PASSION was fancied on debut and can improve. (4) THIRD WINTER raced very green on debut on the Poly for Kotzen, and is likely to improve. Race 2 (1,100m) (6) CHAPBOOK has shown up well in both starts and with Richard Fourie up, looks the part. (8) GRAND FORCE was a close-up third on the Poly last outing. He has run well on this course. (4) BOARDWALK BREEZE showed good pace before tiring the last bit. He has 100m less to travel and can go all the way. (10) BOMBER STREAM is a struggling maiden but has shown some improvement in blinkers at his last two on this course. Race 3 (1,200m) (7) SOHO STAR was narrowly beaten at his last two. Go close. Craig Zackey does duty on (4) COLD SHINE because stable jockey Callan Murray would have been hard-pressed to ride 54.5kg. First-time blinkers help. (5) LICENCE TO THRILL is seldom far back but is 1.5kg worse off with Soho Star on last meetings. (9) VIHAAN'S WEB beat Soho Star last time, but is on 4kg worse terms. Place claims still strong. Race 4 (1,200m) (1) ABADDON drops in class with a big weight but gets 4kg relief. (4) MAR DEL PLATA was touched off with first-time blinkers last run. He has been consistent and is due a change of fortune. (8) GORGEOUS GUY likes this trip. Can be competitive again. (13) VELDSKOEN was not far back on debut and had steady Highveld form. Race 5 (1,400m) (1) SOLDIER BOY got a hefty rating for his debut win, but he gets 4kg off his back. (6) BEACH PALACE has run well for this apprentice and has steady form over course and distance. (11) LAKE COMO has come good. Goes well over course and distance but is drawn the widest. (3) SAIL TO THE MOON can get involved in the finish. Race 6 (1,400m) (9) CAPTAIN'S PRIDE takes on older runners but was not far back first-up in a handicap. (2) NELLIE MELBA showed up well over the trip on Poly last run. She appears to be coming to hand. (1) COPACABANA has smart recent Poly form but does go on the turf. She has the best of the draws. (4) NOODSBERG has run two fair races on Poly. Will come on. Race 7 (1,600m) (3) SONIC JET started at long odds behind the smart Green Sapphire last time. Though she carries a big weight, she does have a touch of class. (8) ONE SMART COOKIE is up in class with a wide draw, but Fourie stays on and she can follow up. (2) ICE RAIN has a better draw and is from an in-form stable. She went up six points in the handicap after her last win. (5) SAFE AND SOUND found her last run too far and she should do better this time around. Race 8 (1,600m) (2) SKYTRIX seems to resent the Poly. Failed narrowly over course and distance three runs back. Can bounce back from good draw. (1) RUGGER LOVER steps up in trip from a good draw. She has consistent sprint form but Fourie is back in the irons. (9) GREENHOUSE has gone close over course and distance, beaten by One Smart Cookie. (11) WEST SIDE STORY made no show on the Poly last run but had steady form before that. Race 9 (1,600m) (1) TERMINATOR is long overdue after three runner-up finishes over course and distance. He has the best of the draws. (10) WHITE SEAHORSE has drawn a bit wide but has raced well since breaking his maiden. He gets a 4kg relief this time. (13) EL REY VIENE is overdue a change of luck. He has drawn wide but should be competitive. (2) CORRUPT is down in class and was a beaten favourite last run in first-time blinkers. Better run expected from a plum draw.

Snaith chooses Guineas for Met champ Eight On Eighteen

All the stars out early in KZN season. The winter racing season in KwaZulu-Natal is set for a rousing start at Greyville on the first Saturday of May, with early entries for Guineas day pitching most of the country's best racehorses into action. Gimme A Prince, South Africa's top-rated horse, tops the list for the Drill Hall Stakes, a storied race that's always been closely linked to thinking about the country's premier contest, the Hollywoodbets Durban July. Unfortunately for trainer Dean Kannemeyer, Gimme A Prince has drawn wide at 19 and racing fans will have to wait and see if the brilliant gelding stands his ground for the Grade 2, 1400m contest. Put up against him are a phalanx of big names: Equus Horse of the Year Dave The King; smart Cape Town sprinter Café Culture; Joburg raiders Main Defender, Cousin Casey and Barbaresco; local heroes See It Again and Gladatorian … and plenty more. Three-year-old Eight On Eighteen, winner of this year's Cape Town Met and Cape Derby, is among the Drill Hall nominations, but his trainer Justin Snaith has already accepted for the colt to run in the WSB Guineas on the same card. Both races are Grade 2s carrying R750,000 purses, but the Guineas is over 1600m, which better suits the youngster at this stage. Snaith's Drill Hall combatants will be Royal Aussie and Great Plains, both of whom could end up in the July line-up. The champion trainer's back-up to Eight On Eighteen in the Guineas is the improving Sail The Seas, who we're likely to hear a lot more about in the coming months. The main threat to the Snaith pair in the Guineas will come from a trio of Highveld visitors: Sean Tarry-trained Cosmic Speed and Legend Of Arthur, and Alec Laird's Fire Attack.
