New Bolton town centre store aiming to breathe new life into high street opens

A new store opened this morning, Friday, in Bolton town centre with special guests invited to welcome the first customers. Ideal Home and Food Hall opened at 8.30am in the space once occupied by Wilko and then Poundland in Deansgate, with a special five per cent discount for the first 1,000 customers. Mayor of Bolton, Cllr David Chadwick, and former Bolton Wanderers winger David Lee were in attendance at the store. Operations manager Thomas Berry said: "We're hoping to get a lot of customers in, we've had a lot of interest, so it's nice to see people coming in for the first time. (Image: NQ) The store will eventually be across two floors, but due to a "hiccup", as Thomas described it, the bottom floor will be opening a few days later than the rest of the store. "We apologise severely for that and we've brought in a five per cent discount as a result," Thomas added. Former Wanderers winger David Lee met staff and customers (Image: NQ) As for prices, a six-pack of Walkers cheese and onion crisps is listed for £2.20, a box of 80 PG Tips teabags is £3.29, two brioche burger buns are 67p, and an extra-thick white bloomer loaf is £1.80. The business will aim to breathe new life into the town's high street, which has been hit hard in recent years by the loss of high profile names like Marks & Spencer. The store will be offering five per cent off food shopping for university students, old-age pensioners and disabled people, NHS staff, police officers and firefighters. The company also has plans to set up other stores in Edinburgh and Darlington.

Popular town centre bar shuts for six weeks for 'essential maintenance'

A popular town centre bar has closed for six weeks for 'essential maintenance' and 'a little spruce up"'. The Old Three Crowns, on Deansgate, shut its doors on Monday, June 30, but promised customers it would reopen in August. The historic pub has been a popular destination for punters since reopening under landlady Lisa Day in 2021. But they don't just come for the regular karaoke sessions - the pub also offers a huge beer garden hidden in the back. In a post to pub's Facebook page they said: "I would like to say how truly grateful I am for all my staff and customers support over the last few weeks (which has been an upheaval for myself, and the staff). "The pub is shutting for 6 WEEKS ONLY to have construction work completed on the external wall and roof. "We will be back bigger and better on the 11th August at 11am. "As you can see from the pictures, there is a lot going on, so please have a bit of heart for the upheaval this has caused myself having to move out of my home as well as temporarily shut a business I love." The pub reassured punters that they were not closing for good and shared pictures of the construction work. READ MORE: New Shake Bee takeaway to open doors in Bolton next month. Punters have been promised that they will be back "fresher and ready to go" and will be having a party when they reopen. The pub said that they will be providing further updates on their Facebook page.

Great British Menu star suddenly closes city centre restaurant after just 18 months as chef issues sombre warning

A TRENDY restaurant in the heart of Manchester is closing down just 15 months after first opening its doors to punters. Medlock Canteen in Deansgate was co-founded by Great British Menu star Sam Grainger and first launched in March last year. 3 Its owners announced the sad of social media, saying there were too many factors at play that would allow the restaurant to stay open any longer. The restaurant was a fusion of a French bistro and American diner that served bottomless coffees and chicken rotisserie among many other delectable items. "With heavy hearts, we're announcing the closure of Medlock Canteen," the restaurant began in a statement posted to Instagram. "When we opened our doors 18 months ago, our dream was simple: to build a neighbourhood spot where everyone felt welcome, serving proper good food you know, love and can't wait to eat." The statement continued: "But the current climate has made that dream a tough one to sustain. Rising costs, increased taxes, and tighter spending have created challenges we've fought hard to overcome but, sadly, they're ones we just can't compete with. "We're proud to say our amazing team has been looked after, with payroll up to date and everyone offered roles elsewhere in our family of venues. "If you've got opportunities going, drop us a message - we'd love to pass them on to anyone ready for their next chapter." The restaurant's three owners concluded: "To everyone who dined, left us a rave review, shared a laugh, or came back for seconds: thank you. You made this little place feel truly special. "And yes, we promise, one day, somehow, we'll get that rhubarb pie back to you! Chris, Owain and Sam x." The three restaurateurs then offered anyone left in the lurch without a booking at the sudden closure of Medlock Canteen a 20 percent discount at their other eateries, Madre, Salon and Winsome. Sam, who hails from Liverpool, first fell in love with food thanks to his West Indian grandfather. He then travelled around the world to hone his skills as a cook, including a stint in Australia and Asia. Sam also owns the restaurant Belzan, which is his flagship eatery in Liverpool, a street food Mexican joint called Escape to Freight Island in Manchester and Madre an authentic Mexican taqueria in the Royal Albert Dock. 3

Manchester: Thirty police officers sent to deal with bar brawl

Every police officer in a city centre unit was despatched to deal with a fight at a bar, licensing chiefs have been told. The brawl broke out at Eagle, on Deansgate, Manchester, on 4 May, and saw 200 people spill out onto the police had been called the week before, when a neighbour thought they had heard a security guard shout 'gun' during another altercation. On Monday, Manchester City Council's licensing committee lifted the suspension of the bar's licence and imposed conditions. The bar's licensee, Ugochukwu Inyama, apologised for the he said he had felt "ganged up on" because of how many complaints had been made - many of which had not been upheld. The committee heard from neighbours that there was a "wider trend" of antisocial behaviour at the premises, including people urinating in the street and playing loud music from cars parked outside. PC Stuart Hammersley said Greater Manchester Police had sent all of its night-time economy team of 30 officers to the 4 May incident. "For all 30 [police officers] to attend is unusual. It's not a weekly occurrence," he added."All those officers not engaged means they are not across the city centre and other busy areas."Mr Inyama, a 25-year veteran of Manchester's hospitality scene, said the fights were "very regrettable"."GMP have looked at the whole thing and they have made recommendations which we fully agree with," he told the committee."Those two nights we slipped up and we are sorry about it." 'Bottle shows' Deansgate ward councillor Anthony McCaul said he believed Eagle had ignored a condition that said it should promote responsible drinking. He showed pictures taken from the bar's social media accounts showing alcohol being poured from bottles into women's mouths. Licensee Mr Inyama said the images taken showed "bottle shows", and no alcohol was poured into customers' mouths by staff. Mr Inyama admitted he "could see" the image promoted irresponsible behaviour. The committee heard there had been 40 complaints in about 18 months, and officers said they had found no evidence of noise problems. Mr Inyama added: "On May 26, 2025, we were closed and a resident reported an incident that we had music playing and cars parked all over the place. "We had the licensing team visit and look at CCTV and they could see we were closed." Four crimes were recorded at Eagle in the previous 12 months - two phone thefts and two assaults -which PC Hammersley said was "below average" for a town bar. The committee imposed a condition that no bottles could be served, other than wine with meals, and ordered the bar to close earlier at weekends. It must now close at 02:00 GMT on Fridays and Saturdays, and 01:00 on Sundays. Listen to the best of BBC Radio Manchester on Sounds and follow BBC Manchester on Facebook, X, and Instagram.
