North Carolina woman found alive months after car found near Death Valley

A missing North Carolina woman was found alive in Colorado more than eight months after her disappearance. Kelsey Pittman's family last spoke to her in November 2024, the Inyo County Sheriff's Office said in a news release. Inyo County is home to California's Death Valley National Park. Pittman was 33 at the time. Pittman was last seen in St. George, Utah, on Dec. 2, 2024, according to her profile in the National Missing and Unidentified Persons System, or NAMUS. On Feb. 5, 2025, deputies from the Inyo County Sheriff's Office and the National Park Service were called to a remote area of Death Valley after receiving a report of an abandoned car on private property, the sheriff's office said on social media. Death Valley is about 260 miles from St. George. The area where the car was located is commonly used by campers during the winter months, the sheriff's office said. Officials confirmed the car, a 2009 Chevrolet HHR with North Carolina plates, was registered to Pittman. Law enforcement searched the vehicle and surrounding area, but found no sign of Pittman. The sheriff's office began a missing person investigation and for months "coordinated with multiple law enforcement agencies, drone teams, cadaver dog handlers, and volunteer search and rescue crews" to search for Pittman. There was no additional physical evidence found near the site where the car was found, the sheriff's office said. Pittman's case was listed on NAMUS in May 2025. Her mother assisted with the investigation and told law enforcement that her daughter may have used aliases including "Infinity Jane" and "Jane Jones," the sheriff's office said in a social media post on July 2. The sheriff's office said on July 22 that Pittman had been found alive in Colorado. They did not specify where in Colorado. No information was given about Pittman's condition. The Inyo County Sheriff's Office said that no further details will be provided "out of respect for" Pittman's privacy and her family. CBS News reached out to the sheriff's office for comment. "We thank our ICSO investigative team, along with the many law enforcement partners, search and rescue volunteers, and community members who assisted in this case and helped share information," the sheriff's office said.

LSU head coach Brian Kelly takes jabs, calls Clemson's Memorial Stadium 'Death Valley Jr.'

The buildup to Clemson football and LSU's primetime clash on August 30 continues to gain steam, and Tigers head coach Brian Kelly isn't shying away from the spotlight. Speaking Wednesday at the Baton Rouge Rotary Club, Kelly didn't miss the opportunity to take a swipe at Clemson's home turf. 'You need those [championship] traits when you're on the road [at Clemson]; when you're at Death Valley Junior,' Kelly said, reigniting the long-running rivalry over which program holds the true claim to the 'Death Valley' nickname. Kelly's comments came on the heels of what he said earlier this month at SEC Media Days, where he not only praised Clemson as a worthy opponent but explained how the season opener has been central to LSU's offseason preparation. 'It's also a program that is considered a premier program,' Kelly said. 'We got an incredible challenge that we are excited about and one that we are looking forward to.' Recently, Kelly revealed that Clemson's logo has become a daily presence inside LSU's football facility. 'We have made this a specific goal, meaning it is tangible for our guys. You go through our weight room, and we have a Clemson paw print on the bags that we hit every day. It is on every monitor in the building to go 1-0,' he said. Despite the mutual respect he expressed toward Dabo Swinney and Clemson's consistency, Kelly still couldn't help but joke, 'We still think we are THE DEATH VALLEY. They can use the name, too. We are letting them borrow it.' As for his own squad, Kelly is confident in what LSU will put on the field this fall. 'On paper, this is the best roster we will put out there since I have been here,' he said Wednesday. 'It's not just about names. It's about individuals, through the transfer portal process, to win a championship for LSU. They're not here for any other reason.' LSU leads the all-time series 3-1, including a memorable win in the 2019 national championship. Clemson, however, will have home-field advantage this time — in its own version of Death Valley. Kickoff is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC, with playoff hopes, conference pride, and bragging rights all on the line. Shock as woman who vanished in Death Valley is found ALIVE nine months later

A woman who mysteriously vanished in California 's sweltering Death Valley has miraculously been found alive nearly nine months after she disappeared. Kelsey Pittman, 33, from North Carolina, was discovered safe in Colorado, authorities announced on Tuesday without providing further details. Pittman was first reported missing by her family after she stopped communicating with them in November 2024, according to the Inyo County Sheriff's Office. On February 9, 2025, police received a tip about a suspicious vehicle abandoned near an area frequented by campers known as 'The Pads' or 'Slab City' just off Highway 190. Police who responded to the scene found Pittman's 2009 Chevrolet HHR, but she was nowhere in sight. 'This led to the initiation of an extensive missing person investigation and search effort,' the sheriff's office said, noting that it coordinated with several law enforcement agencies and employed drones, cadaver dogs and volunteers in the effort. 'Despite exhaustive ground and aerial searches, no additional physical evidence was found at the site,' the sheriff's office said. Authorities declined to provide additional information. 'Out of respect for her privacy and that of her family, no further details will be released,' the statement read. Pittman had last been seen in November 2024 while making contact with law enforcement in Utah, the sheriff's office said. She was known to visit the Las Vegas area. Her mother had stayed in contact with investigators, even visiting the area to help in the initial search.

Campers Say This $33 Powerful Portable Mini Air Conditioner Is a 'Must-have for Summer'

Listening to the TikTok horror stories of Coachella campers waking up in near triple-digit temperatures reminded me how miserable it is to be stuck inside the stuffy nylon walls of a tent during the summer. I've camped in some seriously sweltering places—including Death Valley and the Australian Outback, both of which are subject to oven-like conditions, even in the spring—so I know this discomfort all too well. Unfortunately, I was ill-prepared for hot weather during those camping trips, but if I were to do it over again, a portable air conditioner would be the first thing I'd pack. Specifically, I'd bring along this Vorago Portable Air Conditioner from Amazon; it uses ice and water to generate cool air and circulate it throughout your tent or RV. This cordless, compact AC unit is small, easy to use, and requires no hookups. If you'd think a gadget like this must cost a fortune, you're wrong—it's on sale for just $33 at Amazon. The Vorago Portable Air Conditioner unit uses a system called evaporative cooling—a natural process where cold or icy water evaporates in the air, cooling the surrounding area it's in. It's a little different than your average home AC unit, which circulates a substance called refrigerant that actually removes heat from a space, thus lowering the temperature. In this case, the Vorago portable air conditioner does not remove hot air, but rather acts more as a fan blowing chilled air. It has a 15-ounce tank where you pour in ice water, and it can run continuously on that amount of liquid for six to eight hours, the brand says. You can set a timer for two or four hours to conserve energy and make the battery last longer. This portable air conditioner has three speeds and a large-capacity 2,200mAh battery that recharges to full in just a few hours. Simply plug the USB cable into your car, portable generator, or power bank back at your campsite in order to juice it back up. In addition to the air conditioning function, this multipurpose device also functions as a regular portable fan, humidifier, and night light. The light rotates through seven colors, creating an immersive kaleidoscopic display in the cool and comfy confines of your tent or RV. Needless to say, this portable air conditioner works best in small spaces; some shoppers report using it on their desks and by their beds while at home. A truck driver said they use it to cool down their cab when they're pulled over at rest stops. Reviewers have added that the sound is quiet and actually pleasant, like white noise—'not obnoxious or grating.' It's also so portable that you can even carry it around with you by the strap and use it like your own personal fan. 'As a menopausal momma who oddly enough does outdoor events, this was perfect for staving off the sweats,' one wrote, adding that it's 'super easy to use and surprisingly powerful for its size.' With temperatures soaring into the triple digits and camping season fully underway, more than 1,000 of these portable AC units have been purchased just within the past month. I certainly will not be camping in 100-degree heat without packing my own portable air conditioner from now on. If you're also keen to try this thing out, do so while it's still on sale for $33. Or, keep scrolling to check out more of Amazon's best-selling portable air conditioners, all under $100.
