Man attempts suicide over cop inaction in rescuing kidnapped daughter
Kendrapada: In yet another disturbing instance of alleged police inaction driving citizens to desperation, a 45-year-old man attempted suicide here on Wednesday evening by consuming poison — frustrated over the lack of progress in tracing his abducted daughter.
The incident comes close on the heels of the Balasore case, where a 20-year-old student set herself ablaze after police allegedly failed to act on her sexual harassment complaint.
The man, a farmer, drank pesticide and is undergoing treatment at a private hospital in Cuttack after initially being admitted to SCB Medical College and Hospital. His condition is reported to be stable.
According to police sources, the minor girl was allegedly kidnapped on May 27 by a 24-year-old man from a nearby village.
Despite an FIR being lodged on May 28 under BNS Section 140 (kidnapping) and relevant sections of the Pocso Act, the family claims no meaningful action followed. "The trauma of losing our daughter and the police's negligence drove my husband to take this step," said the girl's mother.
Following the suicide attempt, the state home department said on X that it has directed the DGP and Kendrapada SP to act on the matter. Additional SP Debashis Dhal described it as a sensitive case under investigation and declined to share further details.

Local IIC Kishor Chandra Tarai said a special team has been formed and search operations conducted in Hyderabad and other locations to rescue the abducted girl. "We are also questioning the accused's family and associates to identify possible hideouts," Tarai added.
