Hengqin reboot: How China's bold bet aims to bind Macau closer to the mainland

At just over 104 sq km, Hengqin is three times larger than Macau. While Hengqin is geographically part of the southern Chinese city of Zhuhai, at their nearest point, Hengqin and Macau are only around 187 meters apart. As part of Beijing's plan to wean Macau off its dependence on gaming, Hengqin was designated as a special economic zone in 2009 - but it has not quite worked out. A renewed effort to revive Hengqin's fortunes has sprung up in recent years. CNA's Deborah Wong and Pan Xuanming, senior research fellow at the Guangzhou Institute of Greater Bay Area, discusses Hengqin's role and how it is helping to shape the Greater Bay Area.

Australia and China are looking to keep lines of communication open and expand cooperation, as both countries navigate recent bilateral trade and geopolitical tensions. Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese emphasised the need for dialogue during his meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping in Beijing. Mr Xi Ji echoed that tone, calling for common ground, while putting differences aside. He also hailed a "turn around" in ties with Australia. Mr Albanese is at the halfway point of his six-day trip, which began in Shanghai. Deborah Wong reports from Shenzhen.

Wong set to become first Malaysian woman referee at the Open

Wong will officiate at the Open at Royal Portrush Golf Club this week. THE Malaysian Golf Association's Rules Committee chair, Deborah Wong (left), has been appointed to the rules team of the 153rd British Open Championship, set to take place at Royal Portrush Golf Club in in County Antrim, Northern Ireland, next week. The Open, golf's most celebrated tournament and now the fourth and last major of the men's season, represents a marked achievement for Wong.
