Local firms urged to showcase homegrown products at KL defence expo, says Khaled
ISTANBUL: Malaysian companies have been urged to showcase their own locally developed products at the Defence Services Asia (DSA) and National Security (NatSec) Asia 2026 Exhibition in Kuala Lumpur, as part of efforts to strengthen the nation's defence industry. Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin said the exhibition, scheduled to take place in April next year, serves as a key platform to showcase the country's defence and military advancements, as well as to foster collaboration among various industry players. He added that the products on display could include those developed using local technology or through partnerships with foreign companies. "I hope next year's DSA will be more meaningful by highlighting the participation of Malaysian companies that are now actively establishing themselves in the defence industry. "Previously, many local participants were merely representatives of foreign firms. "However, we hope that next year's edition will also include companies developing their own homegrown technology," he told reporters here. Khaled is currently in Türkiye for a three-day official visit to attend the International Defence Industry Fair (IDEF) 2025 and to inspect the construction of the second batch of three Littoral Mission Ships (LMS) by defence company Savunma Teknolojileri Mühendislik (STM). In a related development, Khaled said several memoranda of understanding (MoUs) between Malaysian and foreign companies were signed during his attendance at IDEF 2025. He said the MoUs covered various areas, including satellite communication solutions, joint development programmes for defence electronic systems, electronic warfare products, and the production of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) systems. In addition, the agreements also encompassed technology transfer, the development of cyber threat information systems, and efforts to expand market reach into the Indo-Pacific region. "Strategic collaborations like these are crucial in advancing the country's defence industry, as they provide opportunities for the transfer of cutting-edge technology and expertise to local industry players. "Through such efforts, Malaysia will not only strengthen its defence capabilities but also position itself as a competitive player in the global defence market," he said.

Malaysia, Turkiye reaffirm commitment to defence ties
KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia and Türkiye have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral defence ties following Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin's official three-day visit to the 17th International Defence Industry Fair (IDEF 2025) in Istanbul. The Defence Ministry, in a statement today, said Khaled, who led the Malaysian delegation from July 23, held a series of high-level meetings aimed at deepening military cooperation, technology sharing, and joint industrial efforts. "Among his key engagements was a courtesy call on Prof Haluk Görgün, Türkiye's Defence Industries Agency (SSB) president, where he was briefed on the SSB's pivotal role in developing Türkiye's defence sector into one of the world's leading players," it said. The ministry said Khaled also witnessed the handing over of participation contracts to Malaysian firms involved in the upcoming Defence Services Asia (DSA) 2026 exhibition, scheduled at the Malaysia International Trade and Exhibition Centre (Mitec) here from April 20 to 23. "Khaled then held a bilateral meeting with Azerbaijan's Minister of Defence Industry, Yugar Mustafayev, where both sides discussed opportunities for collaboration in defence technology, military training, and the exchange of expertise." The ministry said the meeting also marked efforts to expand strategic defence partnerships between Malaysia and Azerbaijan. The Minister also met Türkiye's National Defence Minister, Yaşar Güler, who agreed to further elevate military-to-military cooperation, including joint capacity-building, information exchange, and collaboration in defence science and technology with Malaysia. On the second day of the visit, Khaled visited the Istanbul Shipyard to inspect progress on the Littoral Mission Ship Batch 2 (LMSB2) being built for the Royal Malaysian Navy. "The vessel is expected to be launched in mid-2026 and delivered by the end of 2027. Once commissioned, it will bolster the country's maritime defence and coastal surveillance operations," it read, adding that the entourage also visited defence companies including Turkish Aerospace Industries (Tusas), Aselsan, Dasal, Otokar, Ctech, Asfat, Ares Shipyard and Esen. The visit, part of Malaysia's strategic defence diplomacy agenda, reflects the government's continued efforts to build credible international partnerships under the Defence White Paper's third pillar of cooperation, 'Credible Partnerships'. These engagements underscore Malaysia's position in enhancing global defence cooperation to ensure national security and regional stability.

But in terms of the economic cooperation, both countries are trying our best to expand the relationship,' he told Bernama in an interview here, Wednesday. Nasrabadi said the country hopes to expand its cooperation with Malaysia in high value sectors such as medical tourism, in which Iran can offer its advanced technology, and also in the defence and technology industries. He said Iran participated in the Defence Services Asia (DSA) and National Security Asia (NATSEC) exhibition held here last year, along with the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (LIMA) last May. He said both countries can deepen their trade ties in the agriculture sector. 'We have a lot of products that maybe Malaysia can import, such as fruit. At the same time, we import many products from Malaysia, including palm oil and cocoa. 'We are good friends so, we must work together and try to achieve good outcome,' he said.
