Déise joy at back-to-back after battle with Westmeath
ZuCar All-Ireland Ladies U18C Final: Waterford 5-20 Westmeath 3-10 Waterford clinched their second ZuCar U-18 C All-Ireland title in a row thanks to a stunning display against battling Westmeath in Baltinglass. The Deise held a relatively narrow four-point lead after a pulsating goal-fest of a first half but powered on in the second period, storming to the crown on a fully deserved scoreline of 5-20 to 3-10. Such was the dominance of Fiona Laffan's side in that second 30 minutes, they outscored their classy opponents by 2-10 to 0-4, lethal forwards Treasa Ní Chrotaigh, Abbie Fitzpatrick and Clodagh Power in flying form and boosted by the arrival of the superbly accurate Emma Fitzgerald off the bench after half-time, while centre-back Rebecca Walsh and full-back Deirdre Roche shone in a uncompromising defence. A decent crowd had gathered in a sun-kissed Baltinglass GAA grounds for what promised to be a thriller, and the opening half certainly delivered in that regard. Six goals, some lovely points and football of a very high standard sent Waterford in with a four-point lead at 3-10 to 3-6 after those hectic opening 30 minutes. It was the Leinster champions who hit the ground running early doors, opening up a 1-1 to 0-0 lead after four minutes, Rachel Murphy with the goal and Kate Stuart Trainor causing havoc on the wing. But Waterford were here to play, and white flags from Eimear Campbell, Clodagh Power and team captain Ava Connolly left the minimum between the sides with eight minutes on the clock. The Deise side started bossing matters and by the end of the first quarter they led by 2-6 to 1-2, the goals from Abbie Fitzpatrick and Clodagh Power. This was a free-flowing encounter with strong running from both sides, and it was all in the mix at the break thanks to fine goals from Shannon Breslin and Katie Kilmurray (penalty) who helped Westmeath battle back into contention. However, the introduction of Emma Fitzgerald at the break and her impact from placed balls and the scintillating Deise attack that produced two more goals, the first from Siún Mernin and the second from the outstanding Clodagh Power and a host of points from all over the field left the Waterford side worthy winners after a cracking battle in the Garden County. Scorers – Waterford: C Power 2-6 (4f), A Fitzpatrick 1-2, E Fitzgerald 0-5 (4f), A Connolly 1-1, T Ní Chrotaigh 0-4 (f), S Mernin 1-0, E Campbell 0-1, R Browne 0-1. FAI Cup round-up: Goals galore as top tier go through
There were ten FAI Cup second round games on Friday night as the Premier Division sides progressed as the non-league contingent were unable to spring any surprises. The game of the night saw Sligo Rovers get the better of First Division leaders Dundalk, while Shamrock Rovers put four past Wexford, and Derry City scored five goals inside the final 30 minutes to defeat Treaty United. And there were big wins for other top-tier sides, Bohemians, Drogheda United and Waterford who also progressed to the third round of the competition. Bohs put seven past fellow Dublin side Killester Donnycarney with Colm Whelan scoring a hat-trick and Markuss Strods bagging a brace in the one-sided contest. Drogheda United put five past Dublin club Crumlin United, and while the County Louth side were only leading by one goal at half-time, four second-half strikes put the cup tie beyond doubt. Waterford also hit five past another non-league Dublin side, St Mochta's, winning 5-1 with Tom Lonergan scoring in both halves for the Deise club. It was a closer contest in Galway, however, as John Caulfield's side held a slender 1-0 lead thanks to Stephen Walsh's opener, before finally getting a second in the 74th minute to seal the tie thanks to David Hurley's decider. Wayside Celtic, likewise, were unable to do cause a shock in the local derby with Bray Wanderers as the First Division side ran out 3-0 winners. Elsewhere, Finn Harps beat UCD 3-0, while Kerry came from behind to take Athlone Town to extra time before Kennedy Amechi grabbed a winner in the 96th minute to send the Munster side through. Galway see off Waterford in Tuam
Galway are through to a second successive TG4 All-Ireland SFC semi-final, following their 1-18 to 1-12 victory over Waterford at Tuam Stadium. A Kate Slevin first-half penalty laid the platform for Daniel Moynihan's charges as they went nine points clear but Lauren McGregor's strike early in the second period breathed new life in the Deise challenge. Galway got off to the perfect start, with Eva Noone pointing after 45 seconds. And the hosts followed that up with three more for Olivia Divilly, Ailbhe Davoren and a Slevin free. The Tribeswomen created their best chance when Chellene Trill blasted wide on 10 minutes. Galway got their goal just two minutes later after Davoren fed Slevin. The Claregalway forward found Eva Noone, who won a penalty which Slevin converted. Galway were 1-04 to 0-00 clear but Waterford nearly made a breakthrough when Chloe Fennell and Áine O'Neill were denied by a double-save from keeper Dearbhla Gower and Bronagh Quinn. McGregor put the rebound over before Divilly restored Galway's seven-point cushion. The sides shared the next four white flags before the break, leaving it 1-07 to 0-03 at half-time. Galway maintained the momentum after the restart, with Divilly adding two points. But McGregor and Bríd McMaugh reduced arrears to 1-09 to 0-05 on 34 minutes. Galway pulled 1-12 to 0-06 clear as Slevin (2) and Davoren tallied against McGregor's sole response. The latter brought Waterford back to life when she struck her seventh goal of the championship after good play down the middle through Hannah Power and Aileen Wall. Waterford put Galway on the back foot as points for McMaugh (2) and McGregor left the Munster finalists just 1-14 to 1-09 behind. Eva Noone and Slevin got the Galway minors but two more added through Divilly and Slevin restored a seven point cushion on 51 minutes. After McGregor added a Waterford free, substitute Roisin Leonard landed two between the posts to effectively secure Galway's semi-final date with Dublin. Waterford record a major win in minor final against Clare
An inspirational Waterford soared to a first All-Ireland minor hurling title in 12 years as they overpowered Clare by 11-18 to 0-11 in front of 16,411 fans at FBD Semple Stadium. With only an injury-time burst separating the sides in Dungarvan two months previously, this time Waterford led from start to finish to record their biggest victory of the campaign when needed most. Such determination was epitomised by top scorer Cormac Spain, who despite getting injured in the opening minutes, managed to not only last the entire hour but score an impressive 11-point tally in the process to top up his side's advantage throughout. Shane Power, Gearoid O'Shea, and a miserly full-back unit of Darragh Keane, Conor Lynch and Darragh Murphy also excelled to frustrate their opponents. James O'Connor's side couldn't have asked for a better start when an opening-minute delivery was collected by Dylan Murphy, who offloaded to Pierce Quann to find the net. Accentuated by points for Spain and Power, the Deise found themselves five points clear after only three minutes, a lead they would maintain thanks to a timely block from Keane on a Liam Murphy shot down the other end. Spain went down twice for treatment on his leg but still dominated on the scoreboard, raiding for six second-quarter points, including seeing a point-blank shot tipped over the bar by goalkeeper Leon Talty to power a wind-assisted Waterford to a 1-12 to 0-05 interval cushion. Clare did rally on the resumption with the first three points through substitute John Barry and Ian O'Brien to lower the arrears to seven by the 35th minute. However, that would be as close as the 2023 champions got to Waterford, who fittingly got back on track thanks to talisman Spain. Dylan Murphy had a goal attempt denied by Evan Crimmins, while Talty again repelled a Spain effort. However, a four-point unanswered blitz entering the final 10 minutes – three from the stick of Spain – put the result beyond any doubt as Waterford ended their hurling famine with only a fourth minor crown. Waterford: James Comerford; Darragh Keane, Conor Lynch, Darragh Murphy; Bradley Penkert, Hugo Quann, Tommy Kennedy (0-01); Éanna McHugh (0-01), Gearoid O'Shea; (0-02) Shane Power (0-03), Jack Power, Pierce Quann (1-00); Jamie Shanahan, Dylan Murphy, Cormac Spain (0-11, 0-07f) Clare: Leon Talty; Niall Doyle, Jack O'Halloran, Zak Phelan; Evan Crimmins, Dara Kennedy, Colm Daly; Graham Ball (0-01, 0-01f), Evan Cleary; Ian O'Brien (0-01), Rory Ralph, James O'Donnell; Ben Talty (0-01), Paul Rodgers (0-02, 1f, 1'65), Liam Murphy (0-02)
