Final official sentenced in scheme to steal Pennsylvania mayoral election

MILLBOURNE, Pa. (WHTM) — A federal judge has sentenced the final co-conspirator in a scheme to steal a mayoral election in Delaware County. MD Munsur Ali, a member of the Millbourne Borough Council, was sentenced to 21 months in prison, one year of supervised release and a $2,500 special assessment by United States District Judge Harvey Bartle III after pleading guilty to election fraud offenses. 'These defendants sabotaged the democratic will of their fellow citizens in deciding Millbourne's next mayor,' said U.S. Attorney David Metcalf. The charges stemmed out of a plot to steal a 2021 mayoral election in the borough, according to the U.S. Attorney's Office for the Eastern District of Pennsylvania, after Hasan lost the Democratic primary election by 18 votes. The office said the three devised a plan to rig the election when Hasan declared a write-in campaign. The plan involved a multi-step process to register non-Millbourne voters to vote in the borough for the election that involved: Obtaining personal identification information of non-Millbourne residents, such as their names, addresses and dates of birth Using the personal identifying information to access the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania's online voter registration (PAOVR) website to change the voter registration addresses for those non-Millbourne residents to locations within Millbourne Using the PAOVR website to request mail-in or absentee ballots Retrieving the ballots from the Millbourne mailboxes Impersonating the voters and fraudulently casting write-in votes for Hasan to be mayor Enclosing the fraudulently completed ballots in envelopes and forging the voters' signatures on the envelopes Submitting the ballots in their envelopes to the Delaware County Board of Elections. Federal judge delivers prison time to former local Pennsylvania officials who tried to steal mayor's race The office said the three persuaded friends and family to either register in Millbourne or hand over their personal information, insisting they would not get in trouble as long as they did not vote in other elections, so they could register them. The men registered three-dozen non-Millbourne residents, the office said, and cast ballots in the mayoral election. However, Hasan went on to lose the election anyway by a vote of approximately 165 to 138. The FBI and the Delaware County District Attorney's Office investigated the case. Power restored to Newtown Square, Pennsylvania, senior apartments following 4-day outage

Power was restored just after 3 p.m. Monday at Newtown Towers, an apartment complex in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, after residents spent more than three days in sweltering conditions following last week's storm. The outage left dozens of older adults — many on fixed incomes and with mobility issues — without air conditioning, elevators or refrigeration as a heat wave gripped the region. "I had to clean out my refrigerator," 76-year-old Sue Dougherty said. "Thank God my daughter took a lot of my freezer stuff. But I had to throw out chicken and hot dogs." Dougherty has been staying with family, but returned Monday to check on her cat, Rita. "I just called the vet," she said. "And he said, 'Bring her up.'" Other residents without nearby family found their own ways to stay cool. Blanche Aboyan, 71, spent time in her parked car with the air conditioning running. "I have the air conditioner on in my car and it's feeling great and I'm starting to wake up," Aboyan said. She watched as utility crews worked for hours in the heat, clearing tree branches tangled in power lines. "I don't wish to be them," she said. Some residents were taken to the hospital during the outage, according to neighbors. "Several of the neighbors have been taken by the emergency vehicles because of the heat," resident Bob McDonald said. "But we're very aggressive and proactive in taking care of our neighbors." Without a working elevator, residents said they were largely confined to their apartments. "A lot of people move here because of the elevator," Dougherty said. "But in an emergency like this, there's no elevator." Despite the hardship, many said the experience brought them closer together. "In an emergency like this, we all try to help each other — give each other water. Whatever we can do," Dougherty said. "We have a lot of camaraderie here."

When Upper Darby firefighters arrived at the house along Bond Avenue around 5:30 p.m., they found the tree had pinned the woman down around her legs Christopher Audie Murphy, an Army veteran who lives across the street, ran over to help after hearing the cracking of the tree. When he arrived, he recalled lifting up a section of the roof that caved in near the woman and comforting her as other neighbors and firefighters arrived to help. "My forearms were shot after coming back by the amount of weight that we were holding," Murphy recalled. "It was a whole team of folks." Cara Murphy, his wife, said she and their children are proud of him. "I think my husband is a hero," she said. "Our whole neighborhood rallied around a crazy storm." First responders took the woman to Lankenau Hospital Trauma Center to be evaluated. Neighbors told CBS News Philadelphia that they expect the woman to be OK. Crews started removing the tree's thick trunk and large branches Friday morning.

Friends, family and neighbors remember 12-year-old girl killed in Aston, Pennsylvania, scooter accident

Friends, family and neighbors gathered in Delaware County, Pennsylvania, on Tuesday to remember the 12-year-old girl killed in a scooter accident over the weekend. Thousands packed Ridley Park Middle School to honor Abigail Gillon, the 6th grader who was killed in a scooter accident in Aston on Saturday. Abigail and her best friend, 11-year-old Isabella Jones, were riding an electric scooter on Saturday when they hit a curb and fell. They were then hit by a car. It happened at Lehr Boulevard near Concord Road, where a memorial of flowers and balloons now stands. Both girls were rushed to the hospital. Abby, as she's known, died from her injuries. Courtesy photo Isabella remains in the hospital. Abby's next-door neighbor spoke about her friend, who loved cheerleading, swimming and her friends and family. "Whether she was cheering on her team or gliding through the water, she did it with all her heart," neighbor Brianna Newmiller said. "She cared deeply for her family, friends and classmates, and community. She was the kind of person who showed up for others, who made you feel seen and who brought joy just by being herself." Abby had been on life support since the accident on Saturday. Before she died, she gave one last gift by donating her organs through the Gift of Life. "This morning Abigail had her Hero Walk down the halls of Dupont Hospital. Through the gift of life she was able to save another 12-year-old girl's life by donating her liver, pancreas and both kidneys," Newmiller told the crowd. Before the ceremony, Abby's mom signed a heart balloon for her daughter, which she released to the heavens with a sea of others in a tribute to a young life gone too soon. "Today as we release these balloons, we do so with heavy hearts but also full ones, full of the love she gave us, the memories she gave us and the bond we all share through knowing her. Abigail, we miss you, we miss you, we love you and we will never forget you," Newmiller said. "You will always be a part of us."
