Fire engulfs plastic granule unit in Bawana, second incident in a week
New Delhi: A massive fire engulfed a factory in Bawana, northwest Delhi, in the early hours of Friday. This is the second incident of a factory blaze in a week. You Can Also Check: Delhi AQI | Weather in Delhi | Bank Holidays in Delhi | Public Holidays in Delhi According to Delhi Fire Services (DFS), information regarding the fire came to it at 4.15am. "Immediately, 25 fire tenders were deployed and 150 firefighters worked in shifts to douse the blaze. After about five hours, the fire was doused around 9am, however the fire kept reigniting," a DFS official said. A senior fire officer said: "When the team reached the spot and entered through the front, we found that the entire building was engulfed in flames and extremely difficult to approach right from the front gate. The materials that were being used in the factory, particularly plastic that was used in manufacturing, were very flammable and all around the premises, blocking the pathways of the team, especially because the singular staircase was also blocked. Our effort to enter the building and navigate around were deeply hindered by the amount of ignited materials that were present all around." "The entire 300 square-yard building, consisting of the basement, ground and first floors, was engulfed in the fire," said a DFS official. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like American Investor Warren Buffett Recommends: 5 Books For Turning Your Life Around Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo Fire officers also added that the plastic materials in the factory caught fire quickly as it spread throughout the floor and then the building. As an additional concern, the factory building itself was also very poorly ventilated with only small windows on the top floor which made it difficult for the team to locate the areas of fire and douse it. Loss of working machinery and goods have been reported. The police have reported no casualties. Police said an investigation is under way to ascertain the cause of the fire. Earlier this week, another massive fire in a factory had claimed four lives in Rithala in Rohini's Sector 5 area.

Mango festival celebrates diverse varieties and cultural heritage in new delhi
New Delhi: The capital's much-awaited celebration of the king of fruits—the 34th Mango Festival—was inaugurated by chief minister Rekha Gupta on Friday at Thyagaraj Stadium. Organised by Delhi tourism, the event brought together mango growers, food lovers, and cultural enthusiasts under one roof. The inaugural ceremony was attended by tourism minister Kapil Mishra, chief secretary Dharmendra, MLA Neeraj Basoya, and Delhi tourism and transportation development corporation's managing director Niharika Rai, among others. Held annually since 1987, the Mango Festival is a tribute to India's most beloved fruit. This year, the event features a vibrant exhibition of over 400 mango varieties—from the tiny Husnara to the papaya-sized Haathijhool. Other exotic names like Rataul, Ramkela, Mallika, Amrapali, Litchi, and Fazli are also drawing attention. Key participants this year include ICAR-IARI Pusa, GB Pant University, Bihar Agricultural University, and the Central Institute for Subtropical Horticulture, among others. Reminiscing about her childhood memories associated with mangoes, CM Gupta lauded the tourism department's efforts in organising the annual showcase. "Mangoes are not just fruits, they're part of our tradition and collective nostalgia," she said while unveiling the official mascot of the festival. She urged Delhiites to visit the stadium and enjoy the festivities. India, home to nearly 1,000 of the world's 1,500 mango varieties, produces up to 64% of the global mango supply. Uttar Pradesh alone contributes over 25%, followed by Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Odisha, and Maharashtra. There are more than 400 varieties of mango on display this year. To attract visitors, mango-eating competitions (for both men and women), sale of fresh mangoes and mango-based products, cultural performances and traditional dances, and kids' zones, quizzes, and selfie spots have been planned by the tourism department. The festival is open to the public until June 29, from 11 am to 9 pm daily. Delhi Tourism is running a free shuttle service from INA Metro Station to ensure convenient access for visitors.

Out On Morning Walk, 43-Yr-Old Man Killed In Front Of Daughter
New Delhi: A 43-year-old man was shot dead while his daughter was injured when armed men on a bike fired several shots at the duo on their morning walk on Friday in northwest Delhi's Bawana. The deceased was identified as Deepak Kumar. Police claimed that the murder was a fallout of a gang war, and UK-based gangster Kapil Sangwan alias Nandu was behind the killing. Kumar was allegedly shot eight times from close range near the fields adjoining his farmhouse. Sources said that he was the nephew of underworld don Manjeet Mahal, and the murder might be linked to a long-standing feud between Mahal and London-based Nandu. "Kapil Sangwan suspected Kumar was actively working for Mahal and thus ordered the hit," alleged a police source. The two gangsters have been at odds for years, resulting in the deaths of over a dozen people. You Can Also Check: Delhi AQI | Weather in Delhi | Bank Holidays in Delhi | Public Holidays in Delhi According to police, the incident occurred between 7.30am and 8am. Kumar's father claimed that he was walking at a distance from his son when the incident occurred. His daughter was also injured in her hand and is currently undergoing treatment at a hospital. "The shooters appeared to have conducted a reconnaissance and were well aware of Kumar's routine. They likely knew he stepped out each morning for walks and waited for the right moment to strike," a police officer commented. The attackers fled immediately after the shooting, which occurred just a few metres from Kumar's residence. The deceased was reportedly involved in trading and other business activities. Sources said he was the nephew of jailed gangster t Mahal, a name long associated with violent gang rivalries in Delhi and Haryana. Police suspect that the murder was ordered by UK-based Nandu, who has an Interpol Red Corner Notice against him. This incident is being seen as another episode in the series of gang wars in Delhi, with police struggling to curb the violence. "There's reason to believe Kumar's killing is part of the ongoing Mahal-Nandu feud," a source said, adding that Sangwan ordered a hit to allegedly assert dominance over the rival gang. Over a dozen lives have already been lost in the rivalry between the two gangs. Just two years ago, Nandu was named in the murder of a BJP leader in Delhi. Earlier this year, he was also linked to the killing of a builder in Paschim Vihar. Police teams are poring through CCTV footage of the area in an effort to identify and trace the assailants.

New Excise Policy Not Ready To Roll, Existing Regime To Stay Till Next March
New Delhi: Delhi govt has extended its existing excise policy for the remaining nine months of the 2025-26 financial year to regulate the liquor trade in the capital. Sources said a new policy, which the govt had decided to roll out from July 1, was still in the making. Officials said a meeting was held on Thursday, following which the excise department issued an order saying the competent authority had approved the continuation of the excise duty-based regime, which was in effect from the licensing year 2022-23 and continued in 2023-24, 2024-25 and the first three months of 2025-26. The current policy will be extended with effect from July 1 to March 31, 2026, stated the order. Officials said they issued an order for the issuance of wholesale licences on the terms and conditions of the existing policy and payment of a proportionate licence fee, and the order for retail licences would be issued soon. "The terms and conditions of all licences, which are renewable every year, are also continued for excise year 2025-26," the order stated. There will be no change in price structure, brand registration fee and profit margin, and the retail business will continue to remain with four govt corporations, officials added. The govt aims to come up with a new policy that ensures the supply of quality liquor with transparency while generating revenue for it. The extended policy came into operation in Sept 2022 after the then AAP govt scrapped its reformative 2021-22 policy that ran into rough weather amid allegations of irregularities in its formulation and implementation. The old policy has since been extended for varying periods. It was meant to be a stopgap measure to prevent a regulatory vacuum due to the sudden scrapping of the 2021-22 policy.
