Delhi meat shops shut during Sawan despite no official order, owners report losses

Written by Sharmistha Shivhare Several meat shop owners across Delhi-NCR have voluntarily shut their establishments during the Sawan month, despite no formal directive from authorities. While the closures aligned with religious sensitivities around the Kanwar Yatra, vendors said they are incurring significant financial losses. Mohd Nazir, who runs a shop in Indirapuram, has kept his shutters down since the first day of Sawan. 'There was no circular this year, but I've been closing my shop for four years now. I rely on rent from another property to manage this period,' he said, pointing to the need for alternative income to stay afloat. Sanu Qureshi, who owns multiple outlets across NCR, said he received administrative communication on July 10 and shut his shops the next day. 'I've been doing this for three years. Every Sawan, I lose around Rs 20,000. I make up for it with side work, but the loss still stings,' he said. Irshad Qureshi, General Secretary of the Delhi Meat Merchant Association, clarified that licensed shop owners were not forced to close. 'The mayor only appealed to shopowners to shut down out of respect for Kanwariyas. It wasn't an order,' he said. Earlier this month, the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) had said that it can't pass an order directing that meat shops along the Kanwar Yatra routes be shut, since no such provision exists under the Delhi Municipal Corporation (DMC) Act, 1957. 'We will make a request to meat shop owners to voluntarily shut their shops in deference to the religious sentiments associated with the Kanwar Yatra,' Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh had told PTI. The annual Kanwar Yatra will culminate on July 25. (Sharmistha Shivhare is an intern with The Indian Express)

Nominated councillors to get development funds

In a landmark decision, the Delhi Municipal Corporation has approved a proposal to allocate development funds to nominated councillors, commonly referred to as aldermen, putting them on par with elected councillors for the first time in the city's history. Until now, only elected councillors received financial support under the Councillor Local Area Development Fund to carry out civic works in their wards. However, a recent proposal passed by the MCD House has extended the same funding privileges to the ten nominated councillors appointed by the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi. These aldermen, although unelected, have long held the right to attend and speak in corporation meetings and participate in zone-level discussions. However, the absence of funding limited their ability to initiate or oversee developmental work. The newly passed provision now allows nominated councillors to receive equal funding whenever allocations are made to elected members. This move is expected to empower them to address civic issues directly within the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) areas. Nominated councillor Manoj Jain welcomed the decision, calling it a much-needed and practical step. 'People approach nominated councillors with problems related to parks, street lighting, and broken pavements. Earlier, we could only raise these issues-now we'll be able to solve them,' Jain said. He noted that in areas like Daryaganj, where the elected representative is from the Aam Aadmi Party, several local issues were overlooked. 'I have already secured approval for road and park repairs there through my efforts,' he added. According to the Delhi Municipal Corporation Act, Section 3(3)(b)(i), ten individuals above the age of 25 with special knowledge or experience in municipal affairs are nominated by the Administrator (Lieutenant Governor) to serve as councillors. While these nominated councillors cannot vote in the main corporation meetings, they are allowed to vote in ward committee matters and in elections to the MCD Standing Committee, and can even stand as candidates for that influential body.

MCD: Cannot pass order, no provision to shut meat shops on Kanwar Yatra routes

The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Thursday said that it can't pass an order directing that meat shops along the Kanwar Yatra routes be shut, since no such provision exists under the Delhi Municipal Corporation (DMC) Act, 1957. This comes a day after Law and Order Minister Kapil Mishra announced that meat shops will remain shut on yatra routes. He had also said that the decision was taken jointly by the Delhi government and the MCD, which was echoed by Mayor Raja Iqbal Singh. The annual Kanwar Yatra begins in the month of Shravan. It will begin on Friday and culminate on July 25. In a written reply to a question in the MCD House, the civic body said that under the DMC Act, there is no provision to shut meat shops along the routes of the Kanwar Yatra. However, in the past few years, it has been observed that owners of these establishments voluntarily keep their shops closed during the pilgrimage. Maintaining that MCD officials have been asked to ensure that meat shops along the yatra routes are 'covered', the reply added, 'In order to not hurt the religious sentiments of the devotees, officials are told to run drives from July 11 to July 23, enforcing no illegal sale of meat… on the road or footpath, and (ensure that) the meat shops… are covered.' The Mayor echoed the civic body's legal position. 'We will make a request to meat shop owners to voluntarily shut their shops in deference to the religious sentiments associated with the Kanwar Yatra,' he told PTI. Leader of the House, Pravesh Wahi, said, 'Strict action will be taken against illegal shops. Those that are legal, we will request them to shut down their shops. The Mayor has already requested them…'

MCD extends deadline on property tax rebate in Delhi

Jun 28, 2025 05:02 AM IST The Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) on Friday extended the deadline for availing a 10% rebate on early property tax payments to July 31, giving taxpayers an extra month to file returns and still qualify for the incentive. MCD extends deadline on property tax rebate in Delhi The decision, made during the MCD's standing committee meeting, comes in the wake of complaints about technical glitches on the civic body's tax portal. Typically, the rebate is offered for lump-sum payments made in the first quarter of the financial year, with a cutoff date of June 30. However, the extension was approved after members highlighted persistent access issues, which prevented many residents from filing on time. Under the Delhi Municipal Corporation (DMC) Act, property tax is applicable to all properties—including those in regularised and unauthorised colonies, urban villages, and even vacant plots. The rebate clause states: 'A payment of the tax due in lump-sum in one installment during the first quarter of that year (on or before 30 June) shall entitle to a rebate of 10% of the total tax amount due.' Property tax remains a vital revenue source for the cash-strapped civic body. Last year, the MCD collected around ₹ 2,163 crore from approximately 1.3 million taxpayers—only a fraction of the actual properties in Delhi. For 2025-26, MCD has set an ambitious target of ₹ 4,000 crore, the same as last year.
