Mahershala Ali dodges question about Marvel's troubled Blade reboot

Mahershala Ali expressed reluctance to discuss Marvel 's troubled Blade reboot, in which he is cast as the lead. The Blade reboot, announced in 2019 with Ali in the title role, has faced significant delays and production issues since its initial 2023 release target. Problems include two directors departing the project and its second scheduled release date in November 2025 being removed from the calendar. Marvel head Kevin Feige confirmed in November 2024 that the Blade character, and Mahershala Ali's version, will still be coming to the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Actor Delroy Lindo revealed he exited the reboot because the project "went off the rails", and costumes originally intended for the film were used in another production, ' Sinners '.

Ryan Coogler's 'Sinners' starts streaming this week, including a BASL version, here's how to watch

Hailed by many critics as one of writer-director Ryan Coogler's best films, Sinners makes the leap to streaming this week when it premieres on Max on July 4. The film stars Michael B. Jordan in dual roles as twins Stack and Smoke, who return to their hometown in Jim Crow-era Mississippi to open a juke joint, where they encounter a supernatural evil. Sinners grossed over $364 million globally during its theatrical run this spring and will stream exclusively on Max. The film co-stars Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O'Connell, Wunmi Mosaku, Li Jun Li, Yao, Jayme Lawson, Omar Miller and Delroy Lindo. In addition to the standard version of the film, Max will also be releasing a Black American Sign Language (BASL) version of the film, making Max the first streaming platform to exclusively debut a film interpreted in BASL. Here's everything you need to know about how to watch Sinners when it arrives on streaming this week. Sinners (both the original and BASL versions of the film) will arrive on HBO Max on Friday, July 4. Sinners will stream on HBO Max on July 4. It will also premiere on HBO's linear channel on July 5 at 8 p.m. ET. Sinners will stream exclusively on Max starting on July 4. You can tune in with a standalone subscription to the streaming platform, which starts at $9.99/month, or get the Max, Disney+ and Hulu bundle, which combines all the programming from those three platforms for one discounted price, $29.99/month. Michael B. Jordan as Smoke and Stack Miles Caton as Sammy AKA "Preacher Boy' Hailee Steinfeld as Mary Wunmi Mosaku as Annie Jayme Lawson as Pearline Jack O'Connell as Remmick Omar Benson Miller as Cornbread Li Jun Li as Grace Delroy Lindo as Delta Slim While those who've seen the Sinners end credits scene feel that the door is open for the Sinners franchise to expand, director Ryan Coogler seems to disagree. 'I've been in a space of making franchise films for a bit, so I wanted to get away from that,' Coogler told Ebony Magazine. 'I wanted the movie to feel like a full meal: your appetizers, starters, entrees and desserts, I wanted all of it there… That was always my intention.'

‘The Sandman, Season 2' review: The man of your dreams will have you nodding off

The Hollywood contracts for film and television adaptations of his novels and comic books flew into his hands like enchanted birds. The prolific 64-year-old author, screenwriter and producer could do no wrong. And then, in the summer of 2024, sexual assault and misconduct allegations against Gaiman by multiple women emerged. It got worse for him in January of this year when New York Magazine ran a cover story detailing the accusations and featuring interviews with four of his accusers. The article was published online on Vulture. Gaiman, who denies the allegations, has been banished to the realm of the cancelled. One after another, literary, film, TV and theatre projects have fallen like dominoes. Publisher Dark Horse Comics announced it would no longer work with him and cancelled publication of his Anansi Boys series Publisher Dark Horse Comics announced it would no longer work with him and cancelled publication of his Anansi Boys series and its collected volume. Prime Video's Anansi Boys miniseries completed production some time ago, yet there's no sign of a release date. One of its stars, Delroy Lindo, said recently he's doubtful it will ever see the light of day. Netflix's series Dead Boy Detectives was axed last autumn after just one season. A musical stage version of Gaiman's children's novel Coraline, which was made into a successful animated film in 2011, was scrapped. The producers stated the allegations made it 'impossible to continue'. The planned final season of Prime Video's Good Omens, based on the novel by Gaiman and the late Terry Pratchett, has been reduced to a single 90-minute episode with no involvement from Gaiman. Production on Disney's film of Gaiman's novel The Graveyard Book has paused. It's not clear if this is down to the allegations. Disney has made no comment. The last Gaiman project still standing – but not for much longer – is Season 2 of comic book adaptation The Sandman (Netflix, from Thursday, July 3), arriving three long years after the first. ADVERTISEMENT Learn more To the surprise of fans of the series, Netflix announced in January that this would be the final season. Six episodes are available now and the remaining five drop later in the month. When Gaiman's name appears in the credits, it's hard to ignore the elephant stamping loudly at the back of the room Showrunner Allan Heinberg insists the decision was made back in 2022, long before the allegations against Gaiman, as it was felt there wasn't enough material in the comics about the title character, aka Dream, aka Morpheus, to sustain any more. Whatever about that, when Gaiman's name appears in the credits, it's hard to ignore the elephant stamping loudly at the back of the room. It's unlikely, however, to bother the hardcore fans of the comic books, at whom the series is clearly aimed. They were overjoyed to see the beloved 80s and 90s cult favourite finally brought to the screen after decades of failed attempts. They'll be in nerd heaven all over again. The rest of us, meanwhile, are in hell. Literally. It kicks off with Dream (Tom Sturridge) busily rebuilding his realm. He's summoned to a meeting with fellow members of the Endless: Destiny (Adrian Lester), Death (Kirby Howell-Baptiste), Desire (Mason Alexander Park), Despair (Donna Preston) and Delirium (Esmé Creed-Miles). What the meeting was about, I couldn't quite fathom (the series doesn't make many concessions to clarity), but Dream abruptly heads to hell to rescue his beloved, Nada (Deborah Oyelade), the Queen of the First People, who he condemned to the fiery place 10,000 years earlier for reasons we have neither the space nor the energy to go into. When he gets there, he discovers Lucifer Morningstar (Gwendoline Christie) has had enough of being hell's ruler. She's quit, released all the inhabitants and dupes Dream into taking the key and becoming hell's custodian. It's his problem now and he'll have to face the numerous demons and deities who want to take control of the realm. Like its predecessor, Season 2 is ponderously paced, full of portentous waffle and mostly takes itself desperately seriously. Dream is such a passive hero, you might find yourself nodding off. You stick to your realm and I'll stick to mine. Rating: Two stars

Mahershala Ali Says He's 'Ready' for BLADE, But Marvel Doesn't Seem to Be — GeekTyrant

The Marvel Cinematic Universe's Blade reboot continues to limp through development hell, and Mahershala Ali's latest update doesn't exactly scream progress. While attending the Jurassic World: Rebirth premiere, Ali was asked where things stand with Blade . His response? 'Call Marvel. I'm ready. Let them know I'm ready.' Ali hasn't given up on playing the Daywalker, but it sure sounds like Marvel Studios has put Blade on the backburner, if it's even on the stove at all. This is the same project that was first announced with major fanfare back at San Diego Comic-Con in 2019. Kevin Feige brought Ali onstage to a thunderous response, and yet here we are, six years later, with little more than a voice cameo in Eternals to show for it. During that same stretch of time , Deadpool & Wolverine managed to pull off what many assumed would never happen by bringing Wesley Snipes back as Blade in the multiverse chaos of 2024. That surprise cameo landed well with fans, and now Ryan Reynolds has floated the idea of a true send-off film for Snipes. At this point, that may feel more tangible than Ali's version. Even behind the scenes, there's been a steady unraveling. Delroy Lindo, who was once cast in the Blade reboot, confirmed that he's no longer involved, and he's clearly disappointed. While he didn't say who he was meant to play, he did reveal how promising the early vision for the film was: 'When Marvel came to me, they seemed to be really interested in my input. And in the various conversations I had with producers, the writer, the director at the time, it was all leading into being very inclusive. It was really exciting conceptually, but it was also exciting in terms of the character that was going to form. And then, for whatever reason, it just went off the rails.' He went on to describe a complex character with deep ideological roots: 'There was a Marcus Garvey-esque component to who this man was shaping up to be. I'm not saying that it would've been an out-and-out Garvey-ite. Not that, but just in terms of how this man's philosophy, his ethos, and what was driving him. He was a character who had, very similar to Sinners, created a community, a Black community. He was a character who was the head of this community.' That sounds like the kind of interesting and layered storytelling Blade deserves. And yet, Marvel has let it fizzle. Ali is still on board, and still willing to don the trench coat and katana. But as each year ticks by, and as Marvel continues to reshuffle its priorities, it's hard not to wonder whether Blade is slipping further from reality. If Marvel doesn't move soon, they risk losing not just their Daywalker, but the audience's patience too.
