Ludhiana district reports 5 dengue cases, health dept launches weekly drive

The health department has intensified preventive efforts to contain the potential spread of the mosquito-borne disease. (HT Photo) The health department has intensified preventive efforts to contain the potential spread of the mosquito-borne disease. District epidemiologist Dr Sheetal Narang said stagnant water during monsoons becomes a breeding ground for Aedes mosquitoes, the primary carriers of dengue. 'Even a spoonful of stagnant water is enough for mosquito larvae to develop,' she said. Common breeding spots include discarded tyres, flowerpots, open water containers, and coolers. To tackle the issue, the health department is running a weekly campaign titled 'Har Shukarvaar, Dengue Te Vaar', focusing on public awareness and elimination of breeding grounds. 'We urge residents to check their surroundings every Friday and remove any standing water,' Dr Narang said. Health minister Dr Balbir Singh, who was in Ludhiana on Monday, said teams are conducting door-to-door inspections to identify and destroy mosquito breeding sites. The minister appealed to the public to cooperate fully with health officials and follow preventive measures. 'The goal is to reduce dengue cases by 90% this year, after achieving a 50% drop last year,' he said. Last year, the district reported around 300 dengue cases during the monsoon season. To prevent the spread of dengue, Dr Narang advised people to regularly clean and empty all containers that collect water, such as birdbaths, vases, pet bowls, and tyres. Water storage units like drums and buckets should be tightly covered. She also recommended the use of mosquito repellents during daytime hours. Three new Covid cases lodged, tally up to 76 Three new COVID-19 cases were reported in the district on Tuesday, taking the tally to 76 so far. The new cases include three men aged 20,41, and 57. All of them are reported to be either asymptomatic or mildly symptomatic. Of the total 76 cases reported so far, only 20 are positive at present. While 17 of these are in home isolation, three patients are reported to have been hospitalised, while 53 people have recovered so far. Three people have died of the new Covid variant so far in Ludhiana.

Punjab prepared to tackle dengue, Covid, heatwave, says health minister
Punjab health and family welfare minister Dr Balbir Singh has assured that the state is fully prepared to deal with the threats posed by dengue, COVID-19 and the ongoing heatwave. Under the statewide 'Har Shukkarvaar, Dengue Te Vaar' campaign, Dr Singh visited Balongi, a semi-urban village near Mohali, on Friday. During the visit, he interacted with residents, demonstrating how everyday water containers — such as air cooler tanks, refrigerator trays, flower pots and bird water vessels — can serve as breeding grounds for dengue mosquitoes. He emphasised that the health department is educating the public on preventive measures to mitigate the risks of vector-borne diseases and weather-related health complications. Recognising field efforts, Dr Singh awarded cash prizes of ₹500 each to ASHA workers Sompreet Kaur and Saroj for detecting mosquito larvae in a cooler tank. He informed that over 50,000 field teams, including nursing students, multi-purpose health workers, breeder checkers and school teachers, are mobilised every Friday for door-to-door inspections and community sensitisation. Speaking to the media, Dr Singh highlighted the success of last year's campaign, which led to a 50% reduction in dengue cases. 'This year, we aim to reduce dengue incidences by 80%. With public cooperation, this is achievable,' he added. Addressing the rising concern of heatwaves, the minister advised residents to avoid outdoor activities between 12 pm and 3 pm. He recommended wearing light-coloured clothing, using wet cloths to cover the head and staying hydrated with fluids like lemon water and salt water, to prevent dehydration. On the COVID-19 front, he noted that while neighbouring states such as Delhi and Haryana have reported a rise in cases, Punjab has only recorded 31 mild, asymptomatic infections so far. He added that the two reported COVID-related deaths involved patients with co-morbidities and could not be definitively linked to the virus. 'We urge people to avoid closed-door gatherings and prefer well-ventilated areas. Our healthcare infrastructure is fully equipped with oxygen supplies, essential medicines and emergency beds,' he said.

Ludhiana District mobilises against dengue with awareness rally
National Dengue Day was observed in the district today, with an awareness rally, emphasising the importance of community participation in preventing the spread of this vector-borne disease. The rally was flagged off by civil surgeon Dr Ramandeep Kaur from the civil surgeon's office, marking the commencement of a district-wide campaign to educate residents on dengue prevention and control measures. This initiative follows the recent recognition of the district's exemplary efforts in combating dengue. Earlier this year, the health and family welfare minister of Punjab, Dr Balbir Singh, honoured the district for its performance in effectively managing and controlling dengue cases. This accolade underscores the unwavering commitment of the district's health department and the active involvement of the community in addressing this public health challenge. Speaking at the flag-off ceremony, Dr Kaur reiterated the district's proactive stance against dengue. She stated, 'Today, as we observe National Dengue Day, it is crucial to remember that the fight against dengue is a shared responsibility. I commend the tireless efforts of our health officials and the enthusiastic participation of the people of Ludhiana, which led to the recent recognition by the health minister. However, we must not become complacent. This awareness rally is a step toward further strengthening our community's understanding of dengue and the simple yet effective measures we can all take to protect ourselves and our families.' Dr Kaur further emphasised the importance of continuous vigilance and community action. She urged everyone to recognise that dengue is preventable and collective efforts can significantly reduce its impact. She also highlighted the national theme for dengue prevention: 'Check, Clean, Cover – Steps to Defeat Dengue.' This message encourages all individuals to regularly check their surroundings for stagnant water, clean potential mosquito breeding sites, and cover water containers to prevent mosquito access. 'Har Shukarvaar, Dengue Te Vaar' campaign objective As part of this ongoing campaign, the district health department encouraged every household and institution to dedicate at least ten minutes every Friday to inspect and remove any potential mosquito breeding sources. This simple and consistent weekly activity aims to break the mosquito breeding cycle and create a sustainable public health defense against dengue.
