ArcBest touts results from EV semi pilot
Transportation and logistics company ArcBest announced Wednesday the successful completion of a pilot using an electric Class 8 truck in over-the-road operations. The company concluded the unit's 'performance generally matched its diesel counterparts' during the long-range evaluation. The three-week test was conducted through its less-than-truckload subsidiary, ABF Freight, using a Tesla (NASDAQ: TSLA) semi on routes between ABF terminals in Reno, Nevada, and Sacramento, California. The truck averaged 321 miles per day (4,494 miles in total) with a 1.55 kilowatt-hour usage per mile across a variety of routes, including a 7,200-foot climb over Donner Pass in Northern California. 'We're not looking for a truck that performs well 'for an EV.' It must meet or exceed the performance and total cost of ownership targets of our most efficient diesel units,' said ABF Freight President Matt Godfrey in a news release. 'This pilot gives us great insight into the potential of EV semis in our operations.' The company pointed to limitations for broader application of electric trucks, citing a 'need for continued development of charging infrastructure to support broader deployment across longer routes.' ArcBest (NASDAQ: ARCB) said it has also been testing electric versions of yard tractors, forklifts and Class 6 straight trucks. 'While the path to decarbonization presents complex challenges — such as infrastructure needs and alternative fuel development — it also opens the door to innovation,' said Dennis Anderson, ArcBest's chief innovation officer. 'Vehicles like the Tesla Semi highlight the progress being made and expand the boundaries of what's possible as we work toward a more sustainable future for freight.' Tesla has targeted volume production of its semi for next year. FORT SMITH, Ark.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--ArcBest ® (Nasdaq: ARCB), a leader in supply chain logistics, today announced the successful completion of a pilot program evaluating a Class 8 long-range electric semi-truck in over-the-road operations. Conducted through ArcBest's less-than-truckload carrier ABF Freight ®, the pilot reflects the company's ongoing commitment to exploring emerging technologies that support operational efficiency and environmental responsibility. Over a three-week period, ABF operated a Tesla Semi across typical dispatch lanes, including over-the-road routes between service centers in Reno, Nevada and Sacramento, California. The pilot also included regional runs in the Bay Area and rail shuttle operations. The electric Semi logged 4,494 miles, averaging 321 miles per day with an overall energy efficiency of 1.55 kWh per mile. 'Freight transportation is a vital part of the global economy, and we know it also plays a significant role in overall greenhouse gas emissions,' said Dennis Anderson, ArcBest chief innovation officer. 'While the path to decarbonization presents complex challenges — such as infrastructure needs and alternative fuel development — it also opens the door to innovation. Vehicles like the Tesla Semi highlight the progress being made and expand the boundaries of what's possible as we work toward a more sustainable future for freight.' The vehicle performed well across a variety of routes — including the 7,200 climb over Donner Pass — and generally matched the performance of its diesel counterparts. Driver feedback was positive, with operators noting the vehicle's comfort, safety and ease of use. North Texas family still seeking justice in 2021 hit-and-run death: "My soul is empty"
A Fort Worth family is still waiting for someone to come forward with information about who killed 32-year-old Dennis Anderson in 2021. Police say they are out of leads. "It's not easy. My heart is broken," said his mother, Vickie Anderson. She told CBS News Texas that she and Dennis were inseparable. One of five siblings and a graduate of Dunbar High School, Dennis had dreams of becoming a businessman and was known for speaking his mind. "He may say something out of the ordinary — you least expected it. But he was a guy that loved to work," she said. A painful birthday Tuesday would have been Dennis' 36th birthday. Instead of celebrating, his family marked the day with grief. "The day is hard for me because I miss him so much. The last four years, to be honest, I've been empty. My soul is empty," Vickie Anderson said. Tragic night in 2021 In December 2021, police said Dennis' car broke down on the far-right northbound shoulder of State Highway 121, just south of Beach Street. Investigators believe he was walking outside the vehicle when another car struck and killed him—then sped away. "I just wish this person would come forward. I can forgive whoever it is, because they have to answer to the Lord, not me," Anderson said. Hit-and-runs on the rise "This young man's life was taken. The family is still hurting. And as of right now, we have an individual at large," said Officer Buddy Calzada with the Fort Worth Police Department. Calzada said the department has seen five deadly car-pedestrian incidents in recent weeks. In three of those cases, the drivers left the scene—a felony offense. "When drivers stay on scene, it's literally an accident. The driver faces no charges. But when you leave, that's when it becomes a crime," Calzada said. Honoring Dennis To honor Dennis' birthday, the family held a barbecue and released balloons in his memory, hoping their prayers will one day lead to answers. Fort Worth police say hit-and-run cases are often solved when witnesses come forward. Anyone with information is urged to contact the department.

Scam victims payback could come from new restitution fund
The Brief A proposed new law could help Minnesota scam victims claw back some of the money they lost even if they never catch the scammers. Half the money the state recovers from scammers that doesn't go directly to the victims, would go to a restitution fund. People can collect from the fund if they can document they were scam victims, and they have no other way to get their money back. ST. PAUL, Minn. (FOX 9) - Scam victims could claw back some of the money they lost even if they can't find the scammers, if a new bill becomes Minnesota law. Take it back It would basically work like this: If the state catches a scammer and a court orders penalties above and beyond restitution, half of that money would go into a fund to pay victims who otherwise have no chance to get their money back. "It's not easy to sit here and talk about being scammed," said Dennis Anderson of Maplewood. Anderson is hoping his embarrassing story can help people in his same shoes. Scammers called him posing as his grandson, who had just caused a serious car crash, and the public defender trying to get him out of trouble. "When the 'public defender' said he needed $20,000 in cash for bail immediately, I didn't wait to act," Anderson said. "I was desperate to help my grandson." Almost as soon as Anderson sent the $20,000, the scammers came for more, saying the crash victim was pregnant, and she had a miscarriage, so they needed more money. Maybe money back He stopped it there and the police even caught the courier who came to pick up the extra money, but they never caught the crooks and Anderson was down $20,000. Minnesotans lost about $130 million to scammers in 2024, and usually without being able to catch whoever did it. "They're left without any money, and they're left, as we've heard, tens of thousands of dollars in the hole," said Jessica Whitney, a prosecutor in the Minnesota attorney general's office. Some of the scammers do get caught, though. And under a new bill, their punishments would include paying into a Consumer Fraud Restitution account. Caught scammers pay People who can prove they got scammed but couldn't find the scammer could get paid back from the restitution account. "The Consumer Fraud Restitution Fund would have been a life-saver," Anderson said. "Not just for me, but for many others who have fallen victim to this heartless scam." There's still work to be done on the bill, but it has bipartisan support, and it's a priority this session for the AARP, so there's a decent chance it becomes law.

ArcBest Introduces Vaux Vision™ and Enhancements to Vaux Technology Suite
New advancements highlight ArcBest's customer-led approach to innovation FORT SMITH, Ark., February 10, 2025--(BUSINESS WIRE)--ArcBest® (Nasdaq: ARCB), an integrated logistics company, today announced the introduction of its latest technology offering, Vaux Vision™, which is currently in the pilot phase. Vaux Vision transforms forklifts into intelligent mobile dimensioners to improve material handling efficiencies. This adds to the company's suite of advanced technology solutions. ArcBest has also expanded its existing technologies, the Vaux Freight Movement System™ and Vaux Smart Autonomy™, enhancing their value for customers across various industries, including verticals like data centers, automotive, manufacturing, retail and air cargo. About Vaux Vision Vaux Vision is 3D perception technology designed to streamline material handling by providing precise, real-time freight measurement and insight directly on a forklift. With sensors placed strategically on the forklift that activate upon picking up the freight, the technology captures dimensions, images, and deep shipment insight on the go, identifying revenue opportunities and enhancing operational efficiencies without disrupting workflow. Vaux Vision is NTEP (National Type Evaluation Program) certified and features a touch screen operator display and barcode scanning capabilities. It integrates seamlessly with the Vaux OS as well as new or existing weight scales. Other capabilities include: Capturing photos of freight during pick and drop to improve visibility and transparency Utilizing AI to determine attributes like damage, HazMat, stackable, fragile and leaning Tracking the piece ID or pallet barcode "Our culture of continuous innovation ensures we're always finding new ways to enhance and expand the value that Vaux provides," said Dennis Anderson, chief innovation officer at ArcBest. "Accurate freight dimensions have become increasingly important, but standard static dimensioners can be cost-prohibitive and inefficient for many businesses. With its low barrier to entry and ease of implementation, Vaux Vision offers a flexible solution to this challenge. The pilot phase of Vaux Vision will give us critical insights as we refine the technology and ensure it delivers significant value." Updates to Existing Vaux Technology In addition to Vaux Vision, ArcBest also announced updates to its previously released solutions, introducing more equipment sizes and performance enhancements. These updates were driven by customer feedback across several customer verticals. New Vaux Freight Movement System Equipment Options The Vaux Freight Movement System was the first iteration of the Vaux Technology suite, designed to improve material handling efficiency by reimagining trailer loading and unloading using our mobile platform, the Vaux MP. Freight is loaded onto the Vaux MP outside the trailer, and using a standard forklift equipped with an MP Coupler, easily slides into the trailer. To unload, the forklift and coupler can pull the entire MP out of the trailer in one movement, allowing for easy maneuvering to the optimal location in the warehouse for rapid processing. The Vaux MP is available in multiple sizes and types and features a built-in decking system that can be configured thousands of ways based on shipment needs. This flexibility allows trailers to be fully loaded, even with products that cannot be stacked — reducing the number of trucks on the road and positively impacting environmental sustainability metrics. New equipment options available with the Vaux Freight Movement System include: A new MP decking system configuration that enables stacking of previously unstackable freight, such as high-value server equipment for data centers A 26-foot and 10-foot Roller Deck MP for air cargo ULD containers An Automotive Hauler that enables a standard trailer to transport up to four vehicles A Max Width MP to handle wide freight and a 17-foot MP designed for tight spaces More about the Vaux Freight Movement System Vaux Smart Autonomy Capability Updates One year after launching the Vaux MP, ArcBest announced Vaux Smart Autonomy to enhance safety and efficiency in material handling and address customers' labor challenges. Vaux Smart Autonomy combines autonomous mobile robot (AMR) forklifts and reach trucks with fleet management software and teleoperation capabilities to automate material handling while keeping a human operator involved for tasks that require a human touch. This collaboration between teleoperators and autonomous technology makes warehouses, distribution centers and other industrial facilities safer and more efficient. Vaux Smart Autonomy is flexible out of the box, adapting to variability in warehouse conditions, products and processes, without significant infrastructure changes. Vaux has expanded its 5K counterbalance forklift capabilities to now handle trailer loading and unloading. With its unique design, Vaux Smart Autonomy can manage double-stacked freight in trailers and then seamlessly perform autonomous put-away operations. It also now supports: Managing the autonomous movement of freight that is larger than a standard pallet Stacking on gravity feeds and bulk stacking Moving automotive racks, rack replenishment and rack pick Trailer load and unload, including double-stacked freight More about Vaux Smart Autonomy Working in customer environments has informed Vaux advancement, and its forklifts have significantly ramped the number of successful autonomous missions completed in the last twelve months. In addition, the company's Innovation Warehouse plays a pivotal role in the development and testing of this new technology. It provides a high-tech, real-world environment for R&D teams to ideate, test and iterate on new solutions. The space mirrors the diverse operational settings of the company's customers, allowing for faster, more effective development cycles and ensuring that products meet real-world needs. "Early adopters of the technology have seen substantial productivity improvements and reduced damage costs and emissions. We're excited to see these enhancements make an even bigger impact in the coming months," said Anderson. "With these latest updates, we're empowering our customers to work smarter and achieve their goals more efficiently. Our teams are already working on the next generation of technology, and we remain committed to delivering solutions that are not only powerful but also tailored to the unique needs of our customers."
