2.4 magnitude earthquake recorded in South Carolina Lowcountry

BERKELEY COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — A small earthquake was reported Wednesday morning in the Lowcountry, according to the U.S. Geological Survey and the South Carolina Emergency Management Division. The 2.4 magnitude earthquake happened at 9:57 a.m. about 1.2 miles west of Sangaree in Berkeley County, the USGS said. Small earthquakes are frequent in the Lowcountry and Midland areas of the state. There was a 2.3 magnitude quake in April near the town of Elgin in Kershaw County. A 2.2 magnitude tremor was recorded in March 2024 in Richland County. Prior to that, in August 2022, the USGS issued a rare earthquake advisory for the state, saying a swarm of quakes had 'produced a fairly constant trickle of earthquakes since December 2021.' One of those, a 3.6 magnitude tremor, hit just northeast of Columbia on June 29. * * * Dennis Bright is the Digital Executive Producer at News13. He joined the team in May 2021. Deputies arrest Florence County residential care center employee after EMS workers find facility unstaffed

FLORENCE COUNTY, S.C. (WBTW) — Florence County deputies arrested an employee of a residential care facility on Friday after EMS workers went to the facility and found no staff members on the premises, authorities said. Deputies were called at about 7 a.m. to the Above the Rest Residential Care Facility at 2385 Pamplico Highway. They were eventually able to locate an employee, who they learned had outstanding General Sessions bench warrants, the sheriff's office said. The person, whose name has not been released, was taken to the Florence County Detention Center, deputies said. Additional charges are possible, and more information is expected to be made available as the investigation continues. The sheriff's office was not able to say how many residents lived at the facility. This is a developing story.
