Thunderstorms Send Dennis Hauger to Pole at Iowa Speedway

INDYCAR INDY NXT by Firestone points leader Dennis Hauger will start from the No. 1 position for the INDY NXT by Firestone at Iowa Speedway race after the qualifying session was rained out. The field for the 75-lap race will take the green flag based on entrant points entering the event. SEE: Starting Lineup Hauger had the third-fastest lap in Friday's abbreviated practice, turning a lap of 165.073 mph in Andretti Global's No. 28 Nammo entry. His lap was part of the Andretti organization's strong start to the weekend. Four of the team-related drivers turned laps among the session's top five. Hauger will start from the top spot for the seventh time in nine races this season. He started second in the other two. Salvador de Alba posted the fastest lap of the 30-minute session at 165.518 mph in the No. 27 Grupo Indi car of Andretti Global. Myles Rowe was second driving the No. 99 Abel/Force Indy machine (165.421 mph). '(A) shortened practice, but happy to be where we are,' de Alba said. 'All the Andretti cars are pretty fast. We (turned) good laps at the very end with the used tires, so that gives us even more confidence.' Ricardo Escotto was fourth in the No. 3 Frank's Red Hot car of Andretti Cape Motorsports (164.623 mph). Rookie Lochie Hughes was fifth in Andretti Global's No. 26 McGinley Clinic/USF Pro Championship entry (164.291 mph). Andretti Global's James Roe, who won the pole for last year's race at this .894-mile oval, had the eighth-fastest lap in the No. 29 Topcon entry (163.267 mph). Jordan Missig had the session's only spin, a lazy excursion off Turn 2. He did not make contact with the No. 48 Abel Motorsports car, enabling him to continue after pitting. The field was expected to include Sebastian Murray in the No. 2 DREAM RACING DUBAI entry of Andrett Cape Motorsport, but he was not medically cleared to participate in the wake of last weekend's accident with Escotto at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course. Saturday's 75-lap race starts at 1:30 p.m. ET. FS1, the FOX Sports app and the INDYCAR Radio Network will have the broadcasts. recommended Item 1 of 2

Myles Rowe Makes History with First INDY NXT Win at Iowa

With 14 laps to go in Saturday's Indy NXT race at Iowa Speedway, Myles Rowe muscled the high line passing championship leader Dennis Hauger for the lead en route to his first victory in the series. With the win, Rowe becomes the first Black driver to win in the IndyCar feeder series. The win follows a breakout second season for the driver, who finished second last month at WWT Raceway behind Lochie Hughes. "We've been working, a minute, for this," Rowe told Fox Sports. "We knew we had the pace it was just about waiting until the last lap of the race and seeing that we could do it. I'm so ecstatic, it's really good. Abel Motorsports, they work so hard, my family, my support system, is amazing. I finally did it for them, we don't stop here, we're looking for a lot more than this." Rowe's second year in INDY NXT is make or break as the sophomore driver looks to impress the IndyCar teams and find a seat in this upcoming silly season or the next. Rowe joined INDY NXT following his 2023 championship-winning season in the USF Pro 2000, becoming the first Black driver to win in an IndyCar-sanctioned event in 2021, and following it up with the championship in his third year. With qualifying cancelled Friday, as the track was placed under a tornado warning, Rowe started fourth and played the waiting game. With Iowa's repave, the track is flat and the inside line is highly favored, with drivers only going high in passing attempts and to deal with traffic. Rowe waited until Hauger was stuck behind a lapped car and used his oval experience to make the pass coming to the start/finish line with 13 laps to go. He would lead the remaining laps. "I knew that with the nature of the track being basically flat, especially starting on new tires, passing at the beginning wasn't going to be realistic, trying to wrap it around the outside," Rowe told Fox Sports Georgia Henneberry. "I knew I would have to come to traffic and be a little bit strategic and patient." Hauger settled for second in just his second oval race of his career, coming to Indy NXT for his rookie season from the European Formula ladder. Hauger has been the runaway star of the Indy NXT season with five wins, but the learning curve is steep on ovals. Hanging on to second showed a better understanding at Iowa than in St. Louis at WWT Raceway last month, where Hauger faded from pole to fifth. Hauger's Andretti teammate Salvador De Alba took the final spot on the podium after starting sixth. This is De Alba's first career podium in the series. IndyCar NXT drivers get involved in terrifying crash

An IndyCar NXT race on Sunday at Mid-Ohio was the scene of a horrific crash between Ricardo Escotto and Sebastian Murray. Escotto and Murray were racing into Turn 4 on Lap 4 when Escotto's right front wheel touched Murray's left rear wheel. Murray spun around in front of Escotto and hit the wall at a terrifying rate of speed. Murray's vehicle did a backflip before coming to a stop. IndyCar NXT officials waved the red flag to pause the race. Both Andretti drivers appeared to be OK after getting checked out at the infield care center. "It was super unfortunate. I'm not really sure what happened," Murray said afterward. "I'm just glad that everyone's OK. Obviously, apologies to the team. It's been a good weekend so far and we were hoping to make our way up but things happen. We'll move forward." Escotto was not pleased with Murray and called the crash a "very scary one." "Just frustrated and very angry. It took me a lot to be contained and try to calm me down," he said. "It was a very unfortunate incident, especially having my teammate beside me. It's bad we were in this situation because, at the end of the day, we shouldn't be racing like that. We were on the straight and he moved and obviously made contact like that. "Our racing is very close, very close margins, and if you make a mistake like that, it just comes to this." Dennis Hauger won the race, the fifth of the season. Murray is 10th and Escotto is 13th in the IndyCar NXT standings. IndyCar NXT is the developmental series for drivers hoping to race IndyCar one day. Dennis Hauger Gets Early Jump for Road America Pole

INDYCAR Dennis Hauger wasted no time Saturday seizing the pole position for the Grand Prix of Road America, turning a quick lap early in the session that tempted the rest of the field but was never toppled. INDY NXT by Firestone championship leader Hauger earned the fifth pole of his rookie season with a best lap of 1 minute, 52.3301 seconds in the No. 28 Nammo car of Andretti Global. SEE: Qualifying Results Hauger, who has won four of the six races this season, turned his quickest lap with more than eight minutes remaining in the first of two qualifying groups. No driver in his group came within a half-second, and none of the 10 drivers in the second qualifying group could touch his time. Not bad for a driver who never has turned a lap at the 14-turn, 4.014-mile circuit before this weekend. 'I think we maximized the first run,' Hauger said. 'We knew it (best lap) was going to be on the first run. The second run was more of a small test session for tomorrow. We've been running a bit out of the window balance-wise. Got a bit surprised in practice one, but we've built up from there. Super happy that we managed to get pole.' The qualifying format for the INDYCAR development series features two groups, with the first group determining the odd-numbered starting spots on the starting grid and the second group filling the even-numbered spots. Caio Collet, who led both practice sessions leading into qualifying, was second at 1:52.5479 in the No. 76 HMD Motorsports car. 2024 series Rookie of the Year Collet led the second qualifying group, which was slowed by a red flag with around five minutes to go when Salvador de Alba made contact with the tire barrier in Turn 12 in the No. 27 Grupo Indi car of Andretti Global. Veteran Josh Pierson will start third, tying his career best set last year at this track, after his lap of 1:53.0195 in the No. 14 HMD Motorsports machine. Rookie Lochie Hughes will join Pierson in the second row of the starting grid after his lap of 1:52.9548 in the No. 26 McGinley Clinic/USF Pro Championship entry of Andretti Global. Jack William Miller produced a top lap of 1:53.1576 in the No. 40 Abel/Miller/Vinatieri Motorsports car to earn a career-best starting spot of fifth. Teammate Myles Rowe will join Miller in Row 3 after his quickest lap of 1:53.2014 in the No. 99 Abel/Force Indy car. The 20-lap race starts at 11 a.m. ET Sunday (FS1, the FOX Sports app and the INDYCAR Radio Network). recommended

Dennis Hauger Wins WWTR Pole in Oval Debut

INDYCAR If anyone thought Dennis Hauger might struggle to find speed in the first oval race of his life, think again. INDY NXT by Firestone championship leader Hauger won the pole Saturday for his oval racing debut, taking the top spot for the INDYCAR development series race at World Wide Technology with a two-lap average speed of 166.162 mph in the No. 26 Nammo car fielded by Andretti Global. Hauger's run to his fourth pole of the season was a track record, breaking the previous two-lap average mark of 164.242 set last year by series champion Louis Foster. SEE: Qualifying Results The pole performance for rookie Hauger, who has won four of the first five races this season, came after he looked mortal for nearly the first time this season in the opening practice earlier today on the 1.25-mile oval. He was fifth in that session, more than 1.6 mph slower than leader Caio Collet, as he learned the intricacies of this unique, egg-shaped oval. 'First time on an oval, and we got the pole,' Hauger said. 'Super happy about that. Didn't really know what to expect, but we got up to speed in practice, and we really made improvements for qualifying. 'Looking forward to seeing how we get on tomorrow. It's going to be a bit of a different game.' The 75-lap race starts at 4:30 p.m. ET Sunday (FS1, FOX Sports app, INDYCAR Radio Network). It's the first oval race of the season. 2024 series Rookie of the Year Collet qualified second at 165.735 in the No. 76 HMD Motorsports car. His second lap of 166.341 is the one-lap record for INDY NXT at WWTR. Salvador de Alba will start third after his qualifying performance of 165.223 in the No. 27 Grupo Indi machine of Andretti Global, joined in Row 2 by fellow veteran Myles Rowe, who qualified fourth at 165.082 in the No. 99 Abel/Force Indy car. Rookie Lochie Hughes, the only race winner this season besides Hauger, qualified fifth at 164.350 in the No. 26 McGinley Clinic/USF Pro Championship car of Andretti Global. Josh Pierson will fill out Row 3 after qualifying sixth at 163.993 in the No. 14 HMD Motorsports car.
