Speculation over: BYD-owned Denza coming to South Africa
Upscale brand will launch with a rebadged version of off-road sister brand Fangchengbao's Boa 5 plug-in hybrid SUV. Speculated at the beginning of the year as being another Chinese manufacturer heading to South Africa, a new report has confirmed BYD-owned Denza as, indeed, heading to market next year. Three-pointed star influence Founded as a joint venture between BYD and Mercedes-Benz 15 years ago, a complete line-up reshuffle five years ago resulted in Stuttgart reducing its stake in Denza, before being bought out last year. ALSO READ: BYD Sealion 7 priced as brand's new flagship EV crossover Soon to launch in key other right-hand-drive markets such as the United Kingdom and Australia, the brand, which specialises in electric and plug-in hybrid vehicles, will reportedly launch a single product initially, before expanding its portfolio. First product coming According to CAR Magazine, the model in question will be a B5, a rebadged version of the Boa 5 sold under the Fangchengbao brand in China. Unveiled two years ago as the first Fangchengbao product, with the long wheelbase Boa 8 arriving the following year, the Boa 5/B5 rides on the same body-on-frame DMO or Dual Mode Offroad platform as the BYD Shark bakkie, with dimensions with 4 890 mm in overall length, a width of 1 970, height of 1 920 mm and wheelbase of 2 800 mm. Bao 5 or Denza B5 will ride on the same platform as the BYD Shark. Image: Fangchengbao China Sporting a ground clearance of 220 mm, the B5 can, however, be equipped with BYD's Disus-P hydraulic suspension developed for the YangWang division of ultra-luxury, performance vehicles, which raises its clearance to 310 mm. Offering an approach angle of 35-degrees and departure of 32-degrees, up front, the B5 uses the familiar combination of a 1.5-litre turbocharged petrol engine combined with BYD's own battery pack driving two electric motors. Boa 5's interior sports three displays. Image: Fangchengbao China Similar in layout to the Shark, the battery pack outputs 31.8-kWh, with the front motor producing 200 kW and the rear 285 kW. Combined with the petrol engine's 135 kW, the Boa 5/B5 develops a combined 505kW/760Nm, resulting in a claimed 0-100 km/h time of 4.5 seconds. Supporting DC charging up to 100 kW will require a waiting time of 16 minutes from 30-80%, with the claimed EV range being 125 km according to China's CLTC measuring system. With the petrol engine included, Denza reports a total range of 1 200 km. In terms of spec, the Chinese market Boa 5 comes equipped with three displays; a 15.6-inch infotainment, a 12.3-inch instrument cluster and a 12.3-inch on the passenger side. Three-row Boa 8 could, possibly, also arrive in South Africa. Image: Fangchengbao China Retaining the same centre console as the Shark with physical buttons and switchgear, the B5/Boa 5 also sports a Head-Up Display projected onto the windscreen, three locking differentials and a Devialet sound system. Priced from 289 800 yuan to 352 800 yuan in China, which amounts to a directly converted R721 499 to R878 489, stickers for the South African B5 remains unknown at present. Other products likely Aside from the Boa 5/B5, other models line-up for South Africa could include the newly launched N9 SUV, the D9 MPV and possibly the Z9 that will spearhead its operations in Europe, along with the Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo fastback estate-styled Z9 GT. As mentioned, full plans about Denza's market launch will only come to the fore next year. Additional information from Denza China, NOW READ: Plug-in hybrid BYD Sealion 6 lands in South Africa

BYD's Yangwang luxury brand is going global, under consideration for Australia
China's BYD has confirmed plans to launch its ultra-premium Yangwang brand – which makes the 'jumping' U9 electric supercar – in Europe as a rival to Porsche, Bentley and Jaguar. Speaking to Autocar, BYD vice president Stella Li said, "Our plan is that we bring Yangwang to Europe", with the British publication suggesting the EV (electric vehicle) brand's launch sometime after the Denza brand's 2026 Europe kick-off. It's the first market outside of China and Hong Kong where the Yangwang brand is launching. CarExpert can save you thousands on a new car. Click here to get a great deal. ABOVE: Yangwang U9 Formed in 2022, Yangwang sits atop BYD's brand hierarchy and features the automaker giant's most expensive, exclusive and luxurious models. This currently includes the 'jumping' 960kW U9 electric supercar, quad-motor U7 electric sedan and the amphibious U8 large SUV, an extended-range electric vehicle (EREV). While not yet locked in for Australia, the local BYD office wouldn't rule out the Yangwang luxury brand for local showrooms when asked by CarExpert, and the U8 off-roader has been spied testing in the Australian outback and displayed in local showrooms. Right-hand drive production of the U8 – which is even bigger than a Toyota LandCruiser – started in late 2024, making an Australian launch more feasible. The U8 was shown to Australian media on a recent trip to China, suggesting it – and the Yangwang brand – may be heading here. BYD is bringing a Ferrari rival to Europe!
BYD has finally confirmed plans to launch its high-end Yangwang brand in Europe, more than two years after introducing it in China. Yangwang is the Chinese company's high-end marque, sitting above the core BYD line-up and the new Denza premium brand with a range of tech-heavy, high-performance flagship models that are pitched as rivals to the likes of Bentley, Porsche and Ferrari. The brand was launched in 2023 with the Yangwang U8 - a huge range-extender luxury SUV that packs more than 1000bhp, outpaces the BMW M3, can turn 360deg on the spot and floats on water. That was followed shortly after by the U9 (pictured below), an electric supercar that cracks 240mph and can use its fully hydraulic suspension to jump on the spot or drive on three wheels. Both cars have been on sale in China for around two years, priced at the equivalent of £120,000 and £200,000 respectively, but despite showing both models at the Goodwood Festival of Speed last year, BYD did not officially confirm plans for a European roll-out. But now, BYD vice president Stella Li has told Autocar that "our plan is that we will bring Yangwang into Europe", following the launch of the Audi-rivalling Denza marque early next year. She stopped short of giving full details, but said the U8 and U9 are earmarked for European sale, as well as "more cars coming" including the U7 super-saloon - a quad-motor Lotus Emeya rival with 1250bhp and 1237lb ft for a 0-62mph time of 2.9 seconds. The move will make BYD the first Chinese manufacturer to enter Europe's top-rung luxury market, though it remains unclear whether the company plans to significantly undercut the likes of the Bentley Bentayga and Ferrari 296 on price. The costs of converting the Yangwang cars to right-hand drive, and exporting them to Europe where BYD's EVs face a 17% tariff, will mean they are likely to command a significant premium here compared to China.

BYD's Denza is going after the Defender and Range Rover!
Denza will be pitched as a stand-alone brand in the UK, with its own dealerships located at separate sites from the existing BYD showrooms. Li said the Denza showrooms will be "very beautiful" spaces designed to look like a "crystal box", with a modern, minimalist layout and liberal use of glass. The company is working to ensure Denza is not simply seen as a sub-brand of BYD. "The importance is that people understand this is more premium", said Li, likening Denza to Audi while BYD would be more like Volkswagen. Li said the design and technical capability of Denza's cars will help the brand compete with the likes of BMW and Mercedes. She highlighted the Z9's dramatic styling and ability to turn on the spot as standout attributes, plus the self-parking functionality and the ability to plug into chargers automatically. In the case of the Denza B5, Li said its off-road prowess and high levels of technology will give it the edge against established competitors like the Land Rover Defender. "Our technology, I would say, is 10 times better than legacy brands - and they give you a new experience," she said. Crucially, Li confirmed, all electric Denza models will be compatible with BYD's new 1000kW ultra-rapid EV chargers, which can add 249 miles of range in just five minutes. Following their rollout in China earlier this year, BYD is in talks with partners to install the devices across the UK, where they will be by far the fastest chargers available.
